a tornado kick (360) landing on your kicking leg only [Justin Stuelke]
this is a big stepping stone trick. It leads on to 720s and 900s.
A Parafuso is when you throw one leg up, then the other leg (the "kicking" leg) meets it in the air, and you land it like a double leg. A really nice one is on Cody's site (http://kickme.to/airbornco/). [Ittai]
it usually helps to throw a roundhouse kick before the 540. try to get your body parrelel wth the floor or close to it. aim your roundhouse (part of the tornado kick) at the floor, ensuring a proper landing.
the first step in doing a 540 is basically doing a normal tornado kick or a windmill kick-whatever you want to call it. When you have that motion down, go straight to the next step which is to jump off both legs, or the kicking leg, and tuck in both legs as close as you an to your chest. As you land, you should land on your kicking leg and not the other leg. After you get that down you can try the kicking now and as you jump in the air throw a roundhouse and make sure you land on it. The first few times trying it will feel umcomfortable and if you're like me, don't be scared. As you as you kick your legs as fast as you can, then you will be fine. If you, you'll die.:) j/k
Try to do the tornado kick (all the way round, spin kick with one leg, roundhouse/turning/crescent with the other) but instead of jumping into it, rise up into the kick by hopping off the ball of the foot on the balance leg (the second leg). This will help you out when it comes to the height of the kicks themselves. When doing the tornado like this aim to get as much height on the kicks as you can. Try to get them both up to head height. Also, try to keep your legs fairly straight but relaxed- this will help with the 540. Once you can do the tornado with minimum effort to head height and with an element of grace, you're ready for the 540. If you train in capoeira or know of it, you might find the ginga a good way to build up momentum. If not, a relaxed forward stance is enough. The stepping motion is important when learning this kick. Step out with your back leg so your legs are now in line then step round with your other leg across your body, preferably getting your foot to face behind you. Put a lot of weight into this step and use this foot to rebound off the floor- let your leg yield like a spring, this is where the power comes from. Three things happen at once now. Really twist your upper body as your first leg comes up, and at the same time push off the ground with the second leg. Whip the first kick up as high as you can, and at the apex of your jump throw the second leg out in a tight crescent kick. Don't worry about height, just remember to let it catch up with the first kick, and hook the first leg underneath- this helps with the spin. With a bit of practice, your rotation should help you land on that second leg. The first kick is for height, the second is speed and rotation- slam it into the ground if you want to. Just keep at it until that second leg touches ground first- that's the 540.
I don't get it(the explainations). When i throw my first leg into the air and I try to turn and kick i ALWAYS land on the first leg, not the kicking, because if I turn, it don't work to throw the kicking leg over it and land on that leg. Im only just learning this myself but heres the way i do it... Right foot back to start then take a little step forward on your left then a full step round on your right(moving forward). Your back should be facing your target as you start to spin your head and shoulders round to the right. Then i lift up my left leg and whip it round(almost like a wheel kick)let your body continue spinning and jump off on your right leg as high as possible.From there throw the cresant/roundhouse out(To start with try it low then build up height).Try to scissor your left leg under the right as you kick! To begin with i did a standard jump inside cresant without a spin,jumping on both feet, and tring to land on the kick foot. Hope this helps somebody...
the part of the 540 that i'm having trouble with is tucking me other leg when im landing. everytime i go for it my other leg lands just right before my kicking leg and i just feel like i am so close to landing it. does anybody have any tips on how to tuck the other legs and get the landing on your kicking leg

this is the first move i learned in martial arts for freestyle form, if you are having difficulty learning the 540 here is what you should practice, first you should do a good tornado kick, wind mill kick, spinning long, whatever you want to call it and when you are practicing this kick you should do a round house instead of doing an inside cresent kick, and now with the round house you just need to snap your hip once you are in the air to do the 540 and remember practice makes perfect
* also the main trick to this is snapping your hip

Every time I try to land a 540 I get nevious, and when I jump I can't seem to get high enough and I always land on my first leg. Could some give me some instructions of how to do this trick.
First what you should do to learn the 540 kick is to watch someone do it a couple times.. like a instructor or someone that can do it. But the way I do mine is sorta like a 90... I dont know if u heard of that but its a 540 kick 180% in mid air, but what you want to do is get your momentom before you leave the ground... this means move quickly, if you kick with your right leg, stand on your left side, then quickly spin your back leg (kicking leg) to the front but so your leg is twisted.... so your heel points the way ur facing and ur toes face behind you, then lift your back leg up and off the ground, the tuck your arms in close to your chest to make you turn quicker, then keep ur non kicking foot in the air NO MATTER WHAT then land on your kicking foot. remember 1. stand kicking foot at the back 2. quickly place ur kicking foot inwards where ur kicking 3. lift of with one leg then the other. 3. tuck your hands in .4 kick cresent/round anything your comfortable with 5. keep ur non kicking foot in the air 6. land (if you have any problems you can contact me at pimpin_it_up15@hotmail.com

i find this kick easier to learn by practising ur torando kicks with a round kick instead of a cresent. then wen u get that sharp start trying to land on that leg. this is a great drill to get the kick sharp so u can really wipp it round
you should let ur tucked in non kicking leg guid u threw the kick to give u momentum,and if ur hurting ur self trying to do it give ur self a rest and work on ur leg strength,then start trying to learn it again worked 4 me,ull learn it eventualy.

I am obssesed with learning this stupid kick!! It looks so easy on the videos but I can't seem to do it. My 360 crescent\round house is good, but I can't seem to do the 540. Usually, when I try, I end up just bringing my kicking leg over without actually kicking. (I do land on my kicking leg, I JUST CAN'T GET A GOOD CRESCENT!!!) Hi i am tall and big size, so you gotto udnerstand how hard it is for me. I am trained many years in taekwondo, recetly doing tricking (sparring is bored). Right now is this, I can do a 540 by doing a 540 with turning kick to the mid level(means i aim at a target pad), and landing on both legs. Now I have 2 questions. Firstly, do i have to make my body parallel to the ground, or can i have it like 45 degree. Because i dun have proper landing matress i might hurt myself on the landing process. Second, would aiming higher gives me improvement? (right now i am just kicking the air at mid - chest height, but i saw videos on ppl kicking at a damn high area ( above head )). Hope my questions get answered and by the next post i am 80%

When I had started praticing the 540, I just couldn't get a good momentum going to actually get the kick right. After like 100 times of tryin it, I found out that going a roundhouse, like in the tornado kick, and then getting into the 540 made everything alot smoother. Hopfully this will help others to...
i can do the 540 and land with my kicking leg but i always fall down at the end. it really hurts my ankle. i'm only a purple belt so i'm not in a big hurry to learn this kick but any advice would be appreciated. thanks!
I kind of went through the same thing when I first started to work on this kick. It really helps if you could get something like the tape used for shin splits and rap some of it around your ankles before you try again and see if it's any better.
I think you guys are crazy! It is very hard to believe that someone can actually do 12, 11, 10, 540's in a row. I have been doing the 540 for a year and a half and I pretty much have it mastered. I can do 2 in a row. If I am going to try and kill myself I would try 3. I would like to see a video of 12,11,10,9,8,7,6, or 5 540's in a row. So if you have one and thats very doubtful e-mail it to me.
Try throwing a round houne than a spinning hook before you go for the 540 this will give more rotation. Also make sure that when you do a 540 you throw from the ground to the sky. So, if you spin to your left, step forward with your right so your back is to your target, swing your arms low so they almost touch the ground, and as you spin thru throw your arms up high toward the sky. This will get you much more horizontalto the ground so you should be kicking almost vertical. This will help alot with Sideswipes as well.
Well i dont know if mine are good, but im a lefty, yea i know im a weirdo :P. But when i do it, i feel as though i bend my kicking leg, it feels ugly, doesnt feel right. And when i land the impact on my foot really hurts and i fall O_O. My right leg 540 is okay, i feel less nervous when doing it with my right leg, seeing i dont really use my right leg alot since im a lefty. first of all it has nothing to do with wether your a girl or not...whoever told you its harder for a girl was talkin bullsnap...any body who has their mind set to do something they are phsycally capable to doing can most definatley do it, no excuses....when i do this kick i know i have the spin down and everything...all you havta worry about is leaning back a little bit and to tuck your opposite leg up against your kicking leg while in the air....leaning back in the air durring the spin will help get the leg up higher, DONT LEAN BACK TOO MUCH OR YOU WILL LOOSE ALL BALANCE...focus on the landing with the kicking leg
a good way to practice this kick if you dont have it down very well is this....practice your out-to-in kick...throw an out to in kick and when your foot reaches the point where you would make contact with a target jump off the ground with your opposite foot and just land on your kicking leg...no spin is really needed...just practice landing on the kicking leg first....than go on from there
last week i learned 540 kick but i just cant get my legs stright and my body is standing, i think i go enough high 2 make it good but i just cant do it, any sulotions ?
the 540 is pretty easy once u get used to the pressure from landing on one leg
if u practice awhile, yer abs will get strong torquing & yer legs fast enough to land on the ground in the right position
adding a roundhouse kick is stupid & makes it harder unless u do a 720 And... it takes about 50 tries to get it if ur good check out west coast & florida competition demo teams; i won't say which one i am in hehe ::arrogance creeps in (the guy wit the best 540 OF COURSE! i wouldn't be giving a lecture otherwise unlike some idiots w/ msgs above...)

Its not an easy kick! It took me 6 weeks to get it do wn so dont stop trying , you will get it , just takes time and practice! How alot of people do it is to th row and roundhouse kick or a cresent kick or somet hing like that first , so basically alot of people try to throw momentum kicks before they throw the 540. You dont wanna do that , that just makes the ki ck harder to throw! I find it alot easier to throw t he 540 this way : First , you wanna stand in a left fi ghting stance! Then you take your back leg (right leg) and take it around to the front of you as fast a s you can so basically swinging your leg counter c lockwise and your going to swing it where your leg was before you even started moving so you will be s winging it 360 degrees then you kick off of your ri ght leg and do the 540! Its alot easier you watchin g me then me telling you how to , obviously! Thats a nother and better way for you to get momentum befo re actually doing the 540 and oit would help you wi th your landing! I know thats not your question bu t giving you some advice before helping you with y our question! Now the answer to your question is v ery easy! I had the same problem trying to land the 540 , I didnt wanna land on my kicking leg because I was scared of maybe it hurting or getting humilia ted but you learn to suck it up! That might not be yo ur problem but if it is you need to take some risks i f you wanna learn it! what you need to do to practic e is going into your 540 how you usually do but dont kick , just hop over your leg and land on your kicki ng leg! Practice that alot of times until you are v ery good at it then start to kick! Here is what I als o learned about the 540 , the lower you kick the har der the 540 , the higher you kick the easier the 540 ! I know it might not make sence but its true and the reason is cause if you kick low then you feel low to the ground but if you kick as high as you can you fee l like you are pretty damn high! You also need to ge t your head around , if you are in the middle of the 5 40 and you are still looking straight then thats b ad , the reason is cause you like basically dont tu rn as much in the air and what you need is height and alot of spin so to help you get spin is to turn your h ead as quick as you can to look at where you are land ing and when you do that your body will come around ! Its true , the faster you turn your head the faste r your body will come around cause your body follo ws your head! So if you can get all that down you wil l be good! All you need is height , get your head aro und so your body will spin faster so you can land on your one leg , and get rid of the fear and you will ha ve it! to do this kick you need to fall. tuck the other le g (non kicking) and fall on your knee or something . eventually you will learn to compensate and lan d on your foot, but you will never be able to do the k ick if your other leg hits the ground first. tuck i t in and then you can land the kick on the correct le g. Keys: lots of spin, lots of height, lots of powe r, fall!

to gain height, try spining and trowing your arm s, pick a spot up high(not to high)and try to like u r kicking that spot, that will help u gain height

hey guys, when ur doin a 540 it helps to bring ur ba ck knee up like a kick before doing the actual spin . it gives u much more torque in ur hips so u can twis t harder. good luck.

yea, on my best attempts for aerials i use my arms perfectly and drive my first leg(left) up hard as i can but i always land on the side of my knee or the e dge of my foot and that hurts a bunch. do u hav any ad vice on gettin power for twisting all the way over ?
dont put your front foot up at all before u bout to jump because u need to hav that foot facin the way u r goin or u can try it from a jugin start but u need to have the motion and everthing down but twist your hardest but smoth

personally, i think that torque and twistin mat ters alot more than height because the faster u ca n twist the less air u need, but on ur jump ur height comes mainly from u springing off of ur kicking le g hard

1.When learning the 540 you will need to take ful l advantage of your upper body's efforts. Keepin g your arms out then ripping them through in combi nation with opening up your hips in a manner that a llows them to pump the non-kicking leg off the gro und is the most important part of getting height, speed, and control in this kick 2.When taking off , you will need to rip your arms through as I've men tioned. My left arm is going to do a motion similar to a smooth back fist, and my right arm swings from mid to low is in then it will go high again as you wil l see. My kicking leg (the one still on the ground) needs to push off. GASTROCNEMIUS POWER GARRR!!! ! 3.At this point you should have maximized your a rms momentum, opened up your hips, and pumped the non-kicking leg upwards to launch you totally of f the ground. The hips will open a completely smoo th path for your kicking leg to travel at this poin t. Also a tip: Look slightly upwards, if you look u p chances are you'll end up jumping and kicking hi gher. 4.Okay here it's all a matter of kicking. Yo u can help your kick get through if you use your lef t arm to slightly elbow strike and pull back with y our shoulders simultaneously. My torso is tight ened and helping to rip my leg across. When starti ng the move people often try to use the kicking leg only to get them through which is not correct or he lpful. Experienced people know that the kicking leg is only a small part of the actual kick, where a s most of your momentum comes from the coordinati on of your upper body and hips in an overall effort to launch you up in a loop. So coordinate your damn body or you'll friggin suck! 5.The kick goes righ t over the top, at the same time I'm going to chambe r my non-kicking leg and drop that non-kicking hi p so the leg smoothly rides over and through. 6.As the non-kicking leg dropping and bending. Think of this as compared to standard karate punch in es sence. Where as in a karate punch one arm strikes o ut, the other rips back to your hip, because 2 arms are better then one right? Same scenario here. As one leg is ripping across one way, the other is cha mbering back and pulling the other way. If you're wondering about my arms I keep them in combat guar d position, but that is involuntary and is an afte r effect of the initial ripping motion of my arms a nd counter efforts of my stabilizing torso muscl es to properly coordinate the kick. 7.I'd like yo u to notice the non-kicking leg one last time. I'm practically kicking my own ass. Okay now when the leg kicks over your arms needs to coil back in as yo ur shoulders turn over. Notice the difference in my arms in this slide and the one we just previousl y viewed. You need to use your head to turn yoursel f around as well. Wherever you look is where you ar e going to be. 8.
If you're landing with little height and strugg ling to stick the landing, it's all a matter of con ditioning. Just keep working and maximize your b ody's coordinative efforts to produce the beaut iful 540 you've always wanted.
um...well i got my first 540 kick only a few days a go and how i did it was well i used my arms to give me p ower and then i rasied my left knee and kept it tuck ed the whole time after i did it a couple of times i t ryed to kick higher and keep my leg striaght....t hats it good luck
um...well i got my first 540 kick only a few days a go and how i did it was well i used my arms to give me p ower and then i rasied my left knee and kept it tuck ed the whole time after i did it a couple of times i t ryed to kick higher and keep my leg striaght....t hats it good luck

i can do a 540 petty easily now but the thing i hav a problem with is the landing. everytime i land i la nd so hard my thigh starts to hurt. can anyone help me out
yea that happen to me the first time i did it, i b ecame sore for like a week, and i when i do it it hu rts my thighs, just rest for a while like 4 days o r so, then the pain will be gone
Alright, i have a slight problem. when i try my 54 0s i almost always land on the kicking leg, but whe n i make the attempt my kicking leg is always bent. Can anyone give me a tip to solve this problem?
