basically a cartwheel completed without touching your hands to the ground. aerial is also a generic term for any inverted movement without the hands touching the ground.
take a few steps forward then turn your body sidewards with your right (or left) fott in front. put your right hand over your head and swing it forward as you jump off your front leg. the momentum should carry you over. you can also try this with a half spin.
basically this i started off as an aerial (with the head down)then you want to spin your head in the direction you want your body to spin and fonyinue with a barrel roll
You can do this like a cartwheel or like a roundoff. The cartwheel method is to understand how a cartwheel works. Stand and move sideways into a cartwheel, leaning your torso down to the ground before swinging your legs over. Keep the torso down there until the feet land, then bring it up. So the emphasis is torso down, legs up, legs land, torso up. Also, look at the wall you were facing when standing up. Don't look at the floor. This will help you later. Step two- bend your torso down as if to do the cartwheel. Now move your legs round so you turn 360 degrees (step across with the back leg and then round with the second)and raise your torso. Now inrease the height component making the feet take off when turning. This might seem nothing like an aerial, but it will help you generate drive in your torso. Remember to keep your torso vertical when you bend down- otherwise you'll do a butterfly kick. Keep on increasing the height of the feet until you're comfortable with the idea of moving in the air. Now, for those martial artists out there this next step will be a bit easier. Make the first leg that takes off more of a roundhouse or outside to inside crescent kick. Then make the second leg into a hook kick like motion. Again, aim to increase the height. Next step is to really whip those arms into the move and try to inscribe a high arc on that first kick up. Remember it's torso down, first leg, second leg, first leg lands, second leg lands, torso comes up. Keep that torso vertical and look forwards not at the ground. Each time try to kick higher and whip the body harder. At some point the legs will come up straight and high, torso vertical. There's your aerial. Base it on a roundoff (ie, from a run or a hurdle step) to accelerate it and increase the height, but try not to twist too much into it- that just throws the move out of allignment. Just keep on experimenting and you'll get it. Remember, torso vertical, swing tose arms and kick up high.
Another method for getting the aerial is to learn to butterfly kick, and then gradually make your torso vertical instead of horizontal, kicking up higher each time. Remember not to look at the floor- it'll help you keep your torso in line.
Ive found that when dipping your body down, it works better if you go for distance. Try to go as far forward and as vertical as possible, your legs should get wider too. I used to do aerials on the spot coz i was afraid to land on my face, but if you reach furthur it really helps.
When your first learning your aerials try to kick your legs with a lot of force. when i was learning, i would visualize that some fool was standing in front of me and would try to kick his imaganary face full force during my aerial attempt. this would give me tons of power to get my body around.
Hi Whenever I try my aerials they always end up looking like a messed up inverted butterfly kick that doesn't really..... well.. butterfly.. can anyone tell me what I can do to go vertical? please send an email if you can! thanks!
Before actually DOING an aerial, you want to train your body to know when you are doing an aerial. Start by doing power cartwheels, maybe at least ten of them. Then, do another power cartwheel, but try to pull your hands off of the ground before your feet reach the ground. Keep on doing this. This will help you get right form witout doing an aerial. Pretty soon, you'll have enough height to do one.
I've been trying to do n aerial for a long time. When I do a regular cartwheel, I do it with power. But when I try to do an aerial, my feet go over slow and I don't complete the flip. Please help me. E- mail me with your response at the address I gave you above. Thanks

Hi, I tried your advise but I still cant get it. I practiced power cartwheels, one handed ones too, but still no aerial.I either end up putting my hans on the floor or I fall on my legs, and that hurts. Anyone got other advise
try doing one handed cartwheels using only your first hand. then do them only using your second hand. Then try to really swing your legs over and only use your second hand to catch yourself at the very end. After a while you'll start doing them where your hand comes down at nearly the same time as your feet, once this happens just work on jumping higher and leaning back right when your feet touch the ground.
I know that confidence plays a very important factor in getting any air-borne flip.I've been practising my ariels for ages and I've got the movement and height perfect, but I keep putting my hands down even when I don't need to.i'm to afraid of landing on my face, even on the softest mat.what can i do?
Hi,ive can do power cartwheels, one handed, second handed and jump of my hands too.i can jump into an aerial and swing my arms but i always land on my hands, also my legs are too slow kicking over.I am scared of falling on my arms when i swing.PLEASE!someone help me by E-mailing me.PLEASE!

I need some help my father was teaching me Karate at home but won't any more. Can any one out there give me some tips about how to go from there. Pleeaase. Be Kind, Peace Neffy
The only way I can do an aerial is to start of in a normal 2 hand cartwheel, the go straight into a 1 hand, then just push off straight up and out, kind of like diving into a pull sideways. As soon as you jump up bend your upper body towards the lead hand and whip your legs over fast and hard. Oh yeah, don't think about it...just 2, 1, GO!!
I can do diving cartwheels, power cartwheels, one-handed, second-handed, and I think I've almost got my aerial. My problem is with the ending. I always put my hands down because I'm scared I'll fall on my face. Help?
If you can do second handed cartwheels then you are pretty much there for an aerial. All ya gotta do is try to get your landing leg over in the same time as you put your hands down to brace. If it helps you to use hands thats fine better that then a busted face but eventually just use one hand and try to time it so that your landing leg and arm land simultaneously. Once ya got that down then you are doin aerials...but now ya gotta build up the confidence to pull away that support arm. If your leg is gettin around you will land fine...make sure your landing leg is flexed though and not straight otherwise this will hurt like hell.N e other questions email me.
i'm quite upset because i still can't do an aerial, i've been thinking and practicing all the time.and i ending with still using 1 hand.i felt that i left something out and it is a the take off,i can't take off high enough , but why?i don't understand :(
every time i go to do an aerial it seems as if im going to do it but i always stick my hands out what should i do about that? drop me a line at my email address its irondragonken@msn.com
i like maggets and nastey stuff i like picking up dead birds and smellin rotten eggs and peing in front of every body and doing backflips off of the side of tall buildings man. i stink real bad

I finally did it again im doing aerial again like there is no tommorrow. The way i did it was run push off my front leg lean forward and whip my arms and I go over. One of my friends helped me remember.
i finally learned to do an aerial....something that i was majorly doing wrong was taking too big of a hurdle step (prep jump)Make it smaller and it gives you more power in the actual flip
This doesn't have to do with an aerial but i was wonderin if someone could email me some basic stuff/ exercises/stretches etc... im a complete beginner to let you know, well thanks e-mail me at guttersnipe88@aol.com
The key to doing an ariel is having a strong diving cartwheel and good extension on your legs. Make sure you can do a diving cartwheel (basically instead of putting your hands on the ground and then doing the cartwheel, jump over like your doing an ariel but fully extend your arms as in a normal cartwheel so your hands eventually meet the ground), before you try an ariel you should be doing these well enough that your hands are just there as a safety net and aren't really helping hold you up. When you've got the diving cartwheel down, try one again, but when your hands are about to hit the ground spread your arms out to your sides STILL FULLY EXTENDED. Too often people pull their arms in and in-turn unintentionall pull their legs in too. Having lots of extension with your legs is what throws you up high!!! When you're completely upside down you should look like your doing a cartwhell but your arms are extended out to your sides instead of down to the ground. This is my favorite invert!! Landing it feels awesome!! Just make you do it right, or you're gonna have some hurtin' knees and wrists.
I CAN DO ONE HANDED CARTWHEELS AS WELL AS DIVING ONES. I AINT SCARED TO LAND ON MY FACE. I KNOW I WILL GO OVER BUT AM CONCERNED THAT I COULD BREAK MY LEG ON THE LANDING SIMPLY BECAUSE KNEES CAN'T BEND SIDEWAYS. I IMAGINE THAT POSSIBLY MY FOOT HITS THE FLOOR PREMATURELY WHILE MY HIPS AND TORSO CONTINUE SPINNING, LEADING TO MY KNEE SNAPPING SIDEWAYS! ANY ADVICE? IS THIS FEAR UNRATIONAL, OR DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE IT?
I be doing this move for 8 monthsand can't get nowhere wit it. I cna do every type of cartwheel but aerial Is there I way to go fast enough to convince myself I'm going fast enough any speed training techniques????
hey fellas i have a question...i can get really close to performing an aerial but i have a tendancy to look at the floor and i know its messing up my rotation....any suggestions how to beat this?
u dont go STRAIGHT over sideways on an aerial, you cut the corners so one leg goes up at a time(keep head low) do it with a butterflykick wind up at first, and then with a running start
I am really athletic i can back somersault and front and ican almost do the aerial. If you really want to aerial then keep practicing. Having confidence helps too.
I've been trying to do an aerial. I know I can do it, but I get truly afraid and put my hands down at the last moment. I'm pretty sure that anyone can do an aerial if they have a strong cartwheel, it's just that it's hard to overcome that fear. Any tips on how too? List on this site for me. Thanx. Always
I almost got it all i need is more practice. The trick to the aerial is bend your knees then push off your legs with alot of force. And dont worry about landing on your knees it doesnt hurt at all.
I can do aerial, but I tend to bend my knees when upside down. I notice I bend my knees on my butterfly kick as well. Does anyone have anything, I mean anything, on how to help me stop bending my knees on these movements? Tips, comments, tricks, whatever it would be greatly appreciated.
why dont the people who dont now how to do an aerial jump of a high plat form on to grass, first problem solved by not being afraid of the landing since it is grass you are landing on. secound problem solved for all you people who are scared that you might not have enougth power to cartwheel over on to your feet you will have more time to land the technique. third problem solved for those who are scared of hieghts dont bother doing aerial's since they are in the air.
when you do your aerial, that leg that you jump off of should be jumping UP not forward. so be sure to dig down (or bend your knee so that you can jump up) with your jumping leg and to jump UP not forwards. throw your hands too, that helps.
hi i can do fine cartwheels but i can't seem to do an aerial. When i try it, i end up with my feet up in the air like a handstand. Email me if you can help me!!
When bruce lee hit someone in the head he didnt just think hit the head. He thought go through the head and hit the back of the skull. So when you try the aerial dont think you might land on your face or something think take off land on feet.
I just landed my first aerial a week ago and have been landing it about 90% of the time ever since.
It's weird, actually. I had my back flip and flash kick (both from tumbling into them) before I had my aerial. But here's my own explanation how I got to it, and tips people have given me.
Focus on an object and look at it throughout as much of the aerial as possible (this helps you keep your head up -- looking at the ground is NOT good).
When you jump off one foot, kick back and up with the leading leg (the one going into the air). This gives momentum, allowing you to flip around faster.
I've been told not to take a large hop step into the aerial and am working towards that. Right now, I find running into it helps, but in an aerial, it's more important to think UP rather than getting distance on the move.
One-handed, two handed cartwheels are helpful, but don't practice them too much... otherwise you'll build up a reliance on your hands and will be too scared to not use them.
One misconception I find is trying to do aerials on soft ground like thick carpet or mats. Sure, these surfaces absorb impact, but a firmer floor (at least I find) gives more spring on any flip.
You'll eventually learn when you get a good takeoff with good height and will soon resist putting your hands down. It takes LOTS of practice...
Always stretch before to allow better range of movement and especially flex your ankles a bit to get them used to taking off and landing (to absorb impact). NOT busting up your landing ankle is always a good thing.... lol.
Hope this helps somebody. Good luck with them. ^_^
THIS POST IS ANSWERING SOME PREVIOUS PEOPLE'S QUESTIONS/COMMENTS, SO IF YOU HAD A QUESTION BEFORE, IT MIGHT BE HERE... SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR THE LENGTH!
<<hi i can do fine cartwheels but i can't seem to do an aerial. When i try it, i end up with my feet up in the air like a handstand. Email me if you can help me!!>>
You're not spreading your legs, so that means practice the cartwheel motion more and NOT the roundoff motion (which is where the legs are as you described). In the cartwheel, imagine your legs far apart and when you come up out of it, one leg should recognisably touch the ground before the other.
<<third problem solved for those who are scared of hieghts dont bother doing aerial's since they are in the air.>>
Not necessarily, nexus. Aerials aren't "up in the air" as say, a back flip; they require more speed than other flips, but not as much height. A person scared of FALLING would be less likely to get an aerial easily. This fear has to be conditioned, like anything. The grass technique sounds good, assuming that the person can run off the higher surface and THEN do the aerial. Aerials on the spot are pretty hard, something I have yet to learn to further improve my aerial.
<<hi i can pretty much do an aerial but everytime i try my hand *left* hits the ground just before my legs do ...and is there any good place to put your hands? mine always get in the way>>
Dan, I had the exact same habit before I landed my aerial. You just have to trust that you don't need your left hand. A lot of it's really a mental thing. You somehow have to resist putting your hand down at the last second. Do cartwheels to understand your body position at the end, and the body's motion throughout the cartwheel. Then attempt aerials to see if you can mimic the movement. Once you can more or less mimic the first part, and get enough height/momentum, at the end of the aerial, just focus on keeping your hand in. You'll eventually get it, don't worry. As for arms position, I keep my out to the sides for proper form and haven't yet learned how to swing them for momentum. I guess you shouldn't move around the arms during the aerial at first.
<<I can do aerial, but I tend to bend my knees when upside down. I notice I bend my knees on my butterfly kick as well. >>
Imagine yourself kicking outwards (somebody mentioned this) during the aerial and you'll get more power and extension. Also straighten your legs when practicing cartwheels and stretch before to make it easier for your legs to extend.
<<i can actually go over on the aerial but i just land on my knee. >>
You just need more momentum and height. Practice faster cartwheels. Also don't bend your knees in the middle of the jump. Concentrate on the jump as a whole; if you think too much about the landing, you'll bail out on the exit and thus land on your knees!
<<I would love to use this in my routine but I need to see it in action are there any videos?>>
Practically every competitive Wushu (kung fu) routine has one in it. Just download a routine of KaZaA or something.
<<I be doing this move for 8 monthsand can't get nowhere wit it. I can do every type of cartwheel but aerial. Is there I way to go fast enough to convince myself I'm going fast enough any speed training techniques????>>
I think the problem could be in your cartwheel technique. When you cartwheel, you should end up doing a sort of half twist where you end in the opposite direction you entered the cartwheel. Some people have a tendency to do a cartwheel without the twist and end up in the same position they were about to do the cartwheel in. Practice one type of cartwheel, practice it fast and it should feel light and almost springy when you do it, not forced.

In an aerial your knees absorb impact during the landing, yes. But the way the aerial is, there's not really any way you could break your knee! lol. I'd be more concerned with overflexing my landing ankle... (hope that doesn't give you a new fear! lol). It's okay to fear something like that. Aerials are tricky and doing any flip has the potential for injury, esp. to the legs. One thing, you don't SPIN during an aerial. A half twist will not give you enough spinning momentum to twist out your knees. You won't have enough time in the air to actually start spinning. Fear will be there, but applies to anything with risk involved.
<< Hi,ive can do power cartwheels, one handed, second handed and jump of my hands too.i can jump into an aerial and swing my arms but i always land on my hands, also my legs are too slow kicking over.I am scared of falling on my arms when i swing.>>
Try starting off by forcefull swinging your leg going into the air up and back to get more momentum. The 'kicking over' depends on the beginning of the jump and is not something you consider halfway into it. As for the arms, see the previous suggestions.
WHEW! That's all I can muster up for now. Hopefully, I answered some of your questions and these answers help you out. Aerials take time and practice... we weren't BORN with the innate knowlege of how to do aerials! lol. Good luck, ppl.
Timing is important as well, focus on one smooth aerial movement; if you jump too early, your upper body will get ahead of you and the aerial will not only look jerky, but there's also a good chance that you'll only be able to land on your hands since your legs won't get around fast enough.
First of all i think it would be wise to see if you guys are actually doing a cartwheel right. First you swing and pull your hands down and when they touch the floor they should be as close to your feet as possible, then of course your feet go into the air and when they land they should be as close to your hands as possible. When you can do the normal cartwheel perfectly then go to one hand, diving, blah blah blah just read what other ppl said its all good advice (well most)
I'm scared to do aerials or anything that involves no hands at all. if you were to do that on a hardwood floor you would crack your skull open. I'm afraid to do backhandsprings also by myself. I've never tried them without the spot. what should I do to get over my fears??? please e-mail me @ cool12033@mail2justme.com
I need help landing this i always land on my knees unless i put my hands down or do it down a hill. Its really frustrating i really want to learn this its the best flip.
This is going to sound obvious, but JUMP into the aerial; don't just depend on swinging your legs around superfast. The aerial is more based on getting height than distance.
Once you get better at a jumping aerial, you can start to do a faster one with less prep, in order to bust combos and such.
I have wanted to do this move ever since i played meatl gear solid 2 and saw raiden do it. But i just cant get the landing should i practice fast cartwheels or second handed or something. And one last thing mgs2 is the best game ever.
Congrats Drunken Master! I remember when I first landed it. I landed it, and then sat down and said "Okay, I'm stopping now [thereby quitting while I was ahead, so to speak!]."
5 mins later, I'm up again "making sure it wasn't a fluke" ^_^ I landed it 5 out of the next 6 attempts, with the last one being pretty huge! I'm now working on refining my air position (i.e. straightening my legs and point the toes, and also swinging my arms into it!).
The landing's always the tough part, but once you have it... keep doing it so you remember the rhythm! When you get it once, usually you'll get it the next few times as well.
peeps, if u cant get confidence get sum mats... then land it unsuccessfully for a. 10 times, then ty to do it the corrct way... that way you know that nthing happens if u land wrong... do this ONLY if u lack confidence...
Yes, stronger legs are a plus when doing the aerial; it allows you to not only get height, but also flip your legs over faster.
However, super buffed up legs are obviously not vital to doing this move. It's just that the stronger your legs are, the better your takeoff and height, and there's less chance of you collapsing when you land because your legs absorb the landing impact.
<< You should learn butterfly kick and keep lowering your head it will turn in to an aerial. >>
Sorry DRUNKEN MASTER, but I disagree. If you do it that way, then your final aerial will end up looking like some messed up butterfly kick (kinda like a slant aerial). The difference is that in the aerial, you do a twist; I don't see how the butterfly kick can help with that.
i'm a beginner..i just saw a video of a guy doing the axe aerial and decided to learn it. My question is, is it absolutely necessary to learn it from running. (the recommended way) (i know it's easyer to get good heights in your cartwheel when running fast, but i can do it fine from standing) I can do single (leading) hand cartwheels (i just found out 2day) What i do is raise my leg, force it down and do a cartwheel like that. I noticed if i force it hard i hardly have to put weight on my hands to complete the cartwheel. What i need to know is..will this eventually get me there or will i get stuck at some point where i can't progress unless i go back to the beginning and start training the recommended way?
^Guys, play nice. Take your 'thuggedness' somewhere else.
As for the axe aerial, I agree with Drunken Master. The running aerial gives you more momentum and is more fun since you're actually jumping into it. The axe aerial requires a LOT of spring since you have no forward momentum to help you cartwheel in midair.
At one time, I thought axe aerials were easier, but never landed any... I've landed my running aerial though! This summer, I'm trying to get my axe aerial, 540, b-twist, backflip from standstill, and perfecting my front flip.
I have been trying to do an aerial for about three years now, but I cant seem to get my hands off the ground. Although I have the upper body movement down, and I can do one handed cartwheels. I'm always afraid that I'm going to land on my face or something if anyone has any suggestions please HELP.
You just have to try it even if youre scared thats the only way you will ever do it. Try it down a hill so you will have more height and maybe you will be able to keep your hands off the floor.
Thank you very much for your help Drunken Master! Although I STILL cant do one I'm alot closer then I used to be. I can pick off my hands now but I cant land them at all. Anywho thanx!!!!
i go to a kung fu school that doesnt teach acrobatics and i learn about this site and i started practicing. every time i try to do an aerial i dont get high enough or my legs dont go over fast enough and sometimes i end up doing a butterfly kick can someone please give me some tips
Hey, ive been trying to do an aerial and i can put my hands down for half a second at the begining then take them them off, but i cant start with my hands off. any tips? cuz if my hands could just go off at the beginning i could do it!
I'd recommend having a running start going into it. It gives you more momentum.
re: SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME
Yeah, kungfu schools don't teach acrobatics in general, until you get to higher levels. They want you to get the basics first. If you can do an aerial or backflip, it's a plus but not necessary as you will eventually learn it.
To get your legs over faster, practice "springy cartwheels". Rather than doing a slow cartwheel, work on making it faster as well as sort of 'springing' off your hands at the end. This will get you used to the motion. Before I landed my aerial, I had the same problem... I would have landed it, if only I had not put my hands down at the start. The truth is, putting your hands down at the beginning means you're not getting 'up' enough and so I'd recommend you do a small skipping hop into it to get some upwards momentum. Good luck.
This guy's right. When you start jumpin' into tha aerial, then ur hands will only come down at tha end, but u'll still be closer than before when u put ur hands down at tha start.
Guys i have been learning how to do these with some other guys in my Taekwondo class and this gymnist we found that is helping us learn. Many of the things we thought were wrong. There are many steps that you have to get down before you can do this well it is not a basic move.
First you have to have good cartwheels. Before you do some cartwheels make sure you kick about waist level with your leg going forward and your back leg kicks strait and high. That is the part that is hard to explain but is the most essential. To practice this back leg thing stand facing a wall. Kick the leg you will kick back out away from the wall. Keep your leg strait with your toes pointed. Do 10 good ones bringing your leg strait without bending your knee and also pointing your toes. Then you are ready to work on cartwheels. Once you are good at cartwheels get good a walking cartwheels then running cartwheels. Once you really have that down do dive cartwheels. Pretty soon when those are good your friends will be like why don't you just go for it. This will be the hardest part because you just do it the same except you don't touch your dive cartwheel. The easiest way is to put less and less weight on your dive cartwheel until it is almost nothing. Don't expect to get this fast. Plan at least a month to get this depending on your abilities.
Yeah metal gear is the best game ever but about the aerial. Before you take off get lots of speed and bend your knees and jump with lots of force so your legs will have lots of power and speed and they should stay straight.
Point your toes... there is about no way it would feel natural and have your toes pointed. I know this is kind of hard but just think about pointing your toes in the air and you will start extending your legs
Yes, pointing the toes would help the legs straighten but also when you kick upwards with your free (non-jumping) leg, that knee should not bend. Also work on straightening legs in your cartwheels. Straightening the legs is harder but it looks much neater.
If you want it slightly stylish though, a little sloppiness (knees SLIGHTLY bent) ain't that bad... kinda like a butterfly twist where you cross the legs for style, while compromising technique and neatness.
Also note that an aerial with bent legs looks much "heavier" whereas ones with straight legs look light and make it seem effortless.
WE are a professional martial arts team and we found out that a skip step is one way to get alot of momentum on a standing ariel. Right after the skip step, throw your body into the ariel.
A great way to get momentum is first throwing a spinning hook kick as hard as you can before going into the ariel. After throwing the spinning hook go right down into the aeriel jump off and throw your arms back as hard as you can. Practice a couple times then do it!
could you please help me, i've been practicing the aerial for about 2 weeks, i can do a a sloppy aerial but my body isn't 90 degrees with the ground, its more like 135 degrees, and also my legs arn't all staight, how can i get them straihgt, i try do do them straigh but some how they always bend in to 30 degrees, please help me ( sorry fot the sloppy English, but i'm from the Netherlands)
one bigginer tip for doing a aerial is that to do a one handed cartwheel, but not with the first hand but with your second hand over. this helps by getting a little bit more momentum and then when u get good at it do it a lot more but put ur hand down the last second.
yo Brenster Meister Master try do a spinning hook kick then an aerial. do the spinnink hook kick pretty hard and then flip into an aerial u get A LOT o momentum
I just learned The aerial And You know what? I found out The best way of doing it................Start Doing cartwheel but Dont use your hands But bent your arms and land on the side of your arms( THE ALBOWs and the side of your hand)..If you know what i mean ?!?! You will not make it and thats Not the point because Now you Can get more time in the air to spin round ! and it doesnt hurt landing on the side coz you are so close to the ground...Well all trickz take a little time but now you are Not being hold back by Fear :) I hope you can use this.. Coz this is something i found out and i have no trainer and i dont do any form of Martial arts or sport...i just started 1/2 - maybe 1 Year ago and i can do Many trickz Now..
Hey, I did it! Not perfect, but I still did it!!! I was afraid to land on my face so I was always getting a hand down. I got impatient, and just went for it without the hands and it worked!
Aerials used to drive me crazy when I was a gymnast...But ~ THEY ARE SOO MUCH FUN! (Except on the beam, of course!) When I learned how to do a aerial for the Level 6 routine on floor, I would do it off an elevated thing into our resi pit or off our double mini onto the mat. Then I would do it on the powerfloor that we have. Then I finally did it on the floor ex...yeah, it took me a while to get it. Not many people have all that stuff in the gym but it is a very slow process learning it. Standing is a challenge. You have to stand and raising your leg (the one that you would do a cartwheel with), get a good push off the ground. While your leg is dropping, swing your arms in a circle so that when you take off, you get good heighth. The leg that is not your cartwheel leg (this is the tricky part) - you have to DRIVE it over. And when you land it, don't forget to smile! :) Another hint is that you must have your left and right splits down! That is what keeps some people from not making it all the way around! Keep up the good work~!
Lol, cute. But I tend to grimace when I land hard on an aerial.
Yep, they are fun to do once you have them. Gotta disagree about the splits though. My splits SUCK (my straddle, i.e. centre splits, is barely past 90 degrees and my sides are at least a foot off the ground), still my aerial is okay. I do agree though that better flexibility will make the aerial easier. :)
Zyco's aerial technique is interesting but sounds painful! Ouch, on the elbows!?
Antoine, you have an inverted butterfly kick from what you say. To get 90 degrees, practice moves like cartwheels, handstands, and even handsprings where you invert your body vertically. Many people when doing cartwheels also go 135 degrees and not up and over.
anyone know by mixedmartialartist408 on 2003-07-11
i seen that fool do this move in a tournament . he first did a regular cartwheel, but was warned because u cant touch the ground with ur hands (for that tourny). so this fool did an aerial cartwheel! and smacked that fool in the face. haha. of course his opponent was a sorry ass. theres no comp at all for this guy in this sport. seriously tho, he should do full contact fighting cuz he's conquered the point fighting scene.
Ok, the only problem is that i need to use my hands. I've been doing cartwheels to get closer to aerials. But when I'm trying to do one, it's like that i HAVE to touch the ground with my hand/-s.
"does it help to be able to do the splits for an aerial??? "
Not completely necessary. My flexibility is sub-par and people say I have a nice looking aerial. The extension and ease will be harder to achieve, but it's not impossible to do an aerial without splits.
I my self cant do an aerial but to help me train i put a force sheild kicking pad or 2 where my hand are land and do one hand cartwheel jumping into it the when i take away the pads im jumping higher in the air
I MADE IT!!!....i was practise outside and suddenly a girl who was a gymnastic did come to and she wanted to teach me...and she learn me how to exact....and then i did it..Hallelulja
start by learning butterfly kicks. get really comfortable w/ em and get em really high off the ground. then wind up the same way you do 4 a butterfly kick but quickly bring your torso down @ the end and drive your back leg into the air. if you do this right, you should hae enough momentum to pull i around and it looks like capuera, which 4 those of you who don't know is really cool.
Iv'e been trying to an aerial cartwheel for a while now. I can do a cartwheel really good and w/ power, but everytime I try to an aerial I put my hands down!!! AHHHHHH!!! Does anyone think i should just tie my hands together behind my back and try it that way!?
focus your mind on 1 spot of the ground where you plan to take off. If you need a run-off do so. On the spot you had just focused on jump sideways lifting your lower body up.
I did learn my Aerial to day..now i can do it every time and it is so easy...if you can't make one...keep pratice and never quit..if you give up..then you are a FUck HEad...just kidding....=)
please help me out here, everytime i try to do an ariel i always end up almost landing it, i slide or when i could land it i put my hand down what should i do?
I find that if your body position isn't the best in your landings, the best way to clean them up is to tighten your abs. I'm not sure why, but bightening your trunk while doing your ariel, you'll get better landing position and for me I get better leg swing and height, too. Try it and see if it helps.
Well, I almost could land them really good but how do i make it look like i do it with out hands. Also when i do a an ariel cartwheel when i land i land good but i mostly use like my elbow did any one have that problem too?
You guys are wimps I have been messing around with gymnastics for like 2 months now. I can already land my front flips good flatground can do backflips almost and just tried aerials yesterday for the first time. I can do a lot of stuff the key is to not have fear I never had a spotter to do a backflip or anything.
its not a "fear" problem a brandy is an aerial, but you land with both feet togetehr instead. so i was just wondering how i can do an aerial instead of a brandy each time.
I've seen Mark Dacascos pull off a hands-free cartwheel kick in a movie, but danged if I can remember which one... Any takers? Maybe "American Samurai"...? Or "Kickboxer 5"?
b4 u do this u should try a fake aerial first..and build off of it..umm u basicly do a cartwheel but u put ur hands down real fast n then pull them up then at the last second..put ur hands down..tats how i started off learning to do aerials
ok..so u want to learn an aerial..well the first step i did is to get a high skip, then whip ur hands in and kick ur leg as hard as possible ,that will force u ova. it took a long time for me to get it like 2 days but i'm sure u will get it
im an 11 year old black belt and i want 2 b able 2 do an aerial cartwheel but im 2 afraid of attemping the spin. Im afraid i might crack my head open. What should i do 2 over come my fear? email me suggestions at LilAznMan420@hotmail.com
Hi I was wondering is an aerial the same thing as doing a cart-wheel except you don't use your hands this time? And would it be better to try it out first on a trampoline?
Yes! it the same thing as doing a cart-wheel except you don't use your hands.. but don't do it on a trampoline do it on grass or else you don't know how it feels to do it on hard ground. First time i did an aerial i thought it was very hard. but after about 300 aerials, my aerials are perfect almost like Joe Eigo's.
When you do the aerial, the first mistake i did is try to lift my leg over just like a cartwheel, but when you do it, it is just like the butterfly kick. Except very high, i didn't know i could land it till i saw it myself.
I didn't have time to read all the postings, but I noticed people are saying you turn the torso down. This is bad posture. Your real goal is to just send your feet and butt over your chest, as if on an axis. Of course, the landing is a lunge, like a high bow, or forward stance facing the direction you came from. If your hips and chest face sideways, you ARE asking for knee and/or hip problems, so take the time to practice regular cartwheels whith a proper finish. This kick (it is a kick) is intended for smacking an opponent behind you. I think Billy Blanks used to wins lots of tournaments with it.
You need to focus and clear your mind. Take two steps. Make sure you are in a room with complete silence. Bend the leg and expel some gas before your foot leaves the ground. This will help get your rotation. After landing then smile.
hey, i've read alot of these posts on how to do the aerials, and i can do all the other cartwheels ok, and i even got the aerial yesterday, a few times, but i seem to have the same problem as some of these guys at the last second i put my hands down, is there any little trick to prevent this? let me know. cheers
right, first of all, i am crazy about flips and st uff.BUT.i cant do them to well...my abilities ar e really good.i can cart wheel perfectly, even my old gymnastics teacher said so,before i moved.s o can any one send me some tips/video clips/expla nations ect. i will be sooooooooooooo greatfull .CHEERS!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA H A HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA H A HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAdragon ballz ro cks..!!..!..!..!
how do you move your arms when doing an aerial? i' ve tried the thing off tricks tutorials, but i jus t dont get it. HELP! if possible, video's would help.
hmmm.... i just cant seem to land meh aerils i mea n that i can get my legs over an' their pretty stria ght but i keep landing on my side i've also tried to jump into it and it does increase my hight but stil l i keep on landing on my side... is anyone else hav ing this problem?
WHOOOOO!! dat was fun. heh :) i figured out wat i w as doing wrong...my legs wernt expanding enough ... and to get enough speed on this move u need to fi rst put all your weight on ur back leg then shift it over to ur front leg while twisting ur body down an d moving ur other leg up.
When I try to do an aerial...I get scared because I think I'm gonna fall really hard. I'm good at gym nastics, but I've never really tried a NO handed c artwheel... I wish there were some kind of way to s ee one before I tried it.
ok heres how i learned to do aerials: i was outsid e one day and i just tried to do this twisty thingy a nd somehow landed it. i think it was halfway in bet ween a butterfly and an aerial, like 45 degrees, y a know? anyway i kept practicing and currently ca n do it almost vertical. so i think it helps to star t out on the side you do your best cartwheels with a nd with that side leg forward (i don't know why but it seemed to help me)(and have it forward less and less as you get better). and of course, practice h ard. peace.
My name is Joe and I am a 4th degree blackbelt in ma rtial arts and I've been training in the advance m artial art moves for 2 years. I can do just about ev ery acrobatic move there is except the backflip. If you can help me just message me at Joerson_17@y ahoo.com
yeah, a couple of the posts you people put up conc ern falling in the middle of the aerial or putting your hands down. I used to have that problem too. M ost likely it's because you're looking down at th e ground when you try the aerial. When you look at t he ground that's where you're going to go. If you l ook down in your head you'll go "shit that's the gr ound i better put my hand down" or just by looking a t the ground it kills your flip over and you sorta j ust hang in midair then inevitably fall to the gro und. So, what you should do is practice with somet hing to concentrate your eyes on in front of you, m aybe like a trash can or something. when you start , lock your eyes on it, and keep them there through out the aerial. simple as that! good luck, you can email me if you need help with aerials or double le gs or 540s, i'm still working on everything else. or go to www.trickstutorials.com
yea trickstutorials.com is a good site for lear ning arials. anyways if ur afraid to fall you shou ld just use some mats and bodyslam on them first.. . then u'll see that it wont really hurt THAT much. ..
hi im trying to do the cartwheel but it takes alot of courage and confidence to pull it off although i have tried 56 times and landed on my feet 6 times i still cant get right over fast enough and i bail ou t in the air although i can perform a well front fli p this is a struggle for me so if any one can help me w ith a step by step guide plz email me plz.
hey, i have been tryin to do aerials for some time , i can do roundoffs , cartwheels, back handsprin gs, front handsprings, you name it, i can do it... .unless its an aerial, for some reaosn i dont rota te fast enough and land on the side of my legs. any p ointers?
First of all you need a good cartw heel. Your hands should come down at the same time your right leg is kicking up. And you should be jum ping once your hands are on the ground. Once you ca n do this motion smoothly, you should hardly feel any weight on your hands. Remember to kick hard fi rst then jump up hard second. Don't try and kick an d jump at the same time.
One handed cartwheel s really don't help you get an aerial. What you NEE D to do is get used to the feeling of going upside do wn without your hands.
Basically, just DO IT . But drop your hands if you really feel you're goi ng to crash. Just try to put your hands down at the l ast possible moment. Once you get used to going up side down without your hands, attempting an aeri al will be much easier.
What you have to remem ber is KICK your right leg up as HARD as possible, t hen JUMP off your left leg as HARD as possible. Mak e sure you are jumping UP!! Or you'll never make it . Also remember to jump when your right leg is almo st vertical.
well to be honest i cant do this i only can do a cart wheel. now can anyone tell me how i can put this int o a aerail cartwheel. i would like some help here p lz anyone.
okie dokie, I started reading all these questio ns about arials but i don't get it. is an arial just a cartwheel in the air? what does it mean when u hav e to duck ur head? and im currently trying this on a trampoline but whenever i try to do a cartwheel in the air, i just like do a side flip and land on my bum lol. yup please tell me how!
Doing an aerial is very easy. the key is to use you r arms and torque your body. so on the spot bend dow n in the direction your going and swing your leadi ng arm till it goes behind your back and your follo wing arm is pointing in the direction you want to g o now your leg should be raised pretty high and you r torso kinda verticle with your leg still on the g round now push off with it and swing those legs ove r and thats it
Ok so i've been trying to get these for so long and i get over w/o my hands but i tend to put my hands dow n right before my feet land! Please help if you can !
people it doesnt hurt that much if u land on ur hea d! i was doing aerials yesterday and waz lookin at my dog so i got distracted and i landed on my head.. it didnt hurt so all u wussys just rip ur hands offa da ground! (no matts when i fell) and dont try this move on the trampoline. it gives you bad form and a lso u wont get the feel of landing
Hey Guys how do you do 2 aerials in a row? I have b een able to do one for a long time and I get a lot of po wer but i just cant seem to do two Please help I ne ed it for a dance routine
okay when you do aerials ..ill help you out step b y step..first you need.. -strong cartwheel -strong one handed cartwheel -face your fears . okay now this is the best way to get more power i nto doing your aerials.. run and circle your ar ms around and push them up and jump up and bend your torso make sure you keep your arms close to yourse lf....just keep my tip in mind and you have yourse lf an aerial. if you think your aerial is strong enough go for a backhandspring step out right aft er it.
I almost had the aerial for a couple of weeks, but I just kept touching the ground lightly. A few day s ago a friend of mine told me that I should also rea ly use my last hand. this really worked for my and a fter three attempts I had my aerial. To bad I still practice from a hight, about 30 cm of the ground. S o you also need your last arm to really swing you ov er, and use your leg to push of good. good luck
Hi, Well, i can do aerials off a spring board an d land them well. (Most of the time.) Sometimes I l and a bit low and it really hurts my feet, especial ly the one i'm landing on (My left foot). I even dam aged the ancle right before a competition too. i' m too scared to leave my hand s off the floor when i' m trying to do an aerial with out a springboard as i 'm scared it my hurt my feet.
Can anyone give m e anay advice on this or e-mail me or something ple ase? :-) Thanks a lot
i cant seem to get why do people need to run before they do areals. Aerials go sideways and u run forw ords so runing wont help...also if u wanna combin e aereals with other tricks its best to learn them standing event though its harder at first... i th ink. then again i never tried a running aeral or a d ive aerial yet. do those give you more power?
after months of pratice, i finally succesful di d an aerial yesterday. I did several of them. The s ecret is to run as hard as possible and go for it. If you don't think about it, your hands won't go down and you will do it. Close your eyes and fly. Try doi ng a couple times being aware of your front leg.
i tried doing an aerial and i end up doing a butter fly kick, my hands comes down everytime i try to do it, i think i can do it, its just the fear thats hold ing me back, please help
how do i get more power i get threw the first half o f the flip fine but halfway i just sorta like fall d own right on my rear lol sorta gets annoying can an yone help please !!?
Aerials are hard. Here is how i suggest you do it.
Firstly learn cartwheels really well then d ifferent 1 handed cartwheels and power ones unti ll you can get them stop on
Secondly is to get o ver the fear, tring into a mat is a good idea (not st arting on one as you lose power)
Just go for it . Like anything the aim is to just get over the firs t few times, try it with a HUGE amount of power/con trolled agression to get your way over. Once you c an get over, take away the mat, and keep tring unti ll its perfect to land them.
u guys make aerials sound harder than they r, and this is coming from an 11 yr old. jus go to trickstu torials.com and watch taegashi. he explains how to do aerials very well
I can do perfect cartwheels and one-handed cart wheels. When I do the aerial, my hands automatica lly touch the ground when I’m about to go over. So, in fact, I end up doing a normal cartwheel instead !!! I try to keep my arms at the side but it doesn’t s tay there. Also, I don’t have enough height to g o over, so my head is very close to the ground. I gue ss I’m scared that I will land on my head so that’s w hy I have to use my hands for support. Lastly, I h ear that the key to an aerial is momentum, how do I b uild this up and gain enough height to go over at th e same time?
chase, i landed 2 aerials today. im gonna do them in gym tommorow. kate. you gotta real pump ur base leg and jump off of the ball of ur foot for height. a nd for rotation u wanna twist ur body to where you c an almost see behind and kick ur first leg up as hig h as u can before u jump.
I've been a gymnast for about 7 or 8 years now, and i just recently took a class and learned some good drills for aerial beginnners.
cartwheel pi ckups: start off a regular cartwheel and as your l egs are over your head, try to pick your hands up.
and
dive carthweels: i find this easier t o put your "wrong" leg in front and then step into i t, but do as you will...when you go for a cartwheel , dive into it..keep your hands off the ground for as long as possible. if your hands touch quickly, try to pick them up.
i almost have an aerial. but i can't do a one handed cartwheel without lan ding all over the place. one handed cartwheels don't help me get my aerial, and i dont see why they would.
evetually, your dive and pick-up car twheels will be very good and you will be able to pu t them together, getting even closer to an aerial .
hope i helped, if you want more specific hel p, just email!
If you know how to do a cartwheel, you can do an aer ial off of a diving board. All you have to do is pret end like you are going to do a cartwheel, place you r hands off the end of the diving board. then pull t hem back.. by the time you do you are already flipp ing to you won't fall in. You can do this with your l egs apart or together.. from experience it hurts less if you pull them together @ the last second.
aerials are cool.i can do them and im only 13.it t ook me a day to get it down perfect.look the way you want to go and dont throw your arms straight to the floor.there is a good tutorial at www.tricktuto rials.com
hey, can anyway here do an aerial switch? if u can then can u explain how to do them. i can do aerials v ery well now and i want t try somethin new.thanx
to do aerial cartwheel easily i just did it in 2 ho urs i can do it now from standig posation if you wan na do it just turn your body sidewards with your ri ght or left foot in front. & swing your hands forwa rd as you jump off your front leg. the momentum sho uld carry you over.
see this video & try do the same thing on this link
ok, i used to be in gymnastics until i broke my arm on the beam. Now, in my backyard, i teach 6 kids to d o gymnastics (floor stuff) now im thinking about going back into gymnastics but im scared of what h appoened to my arm 4 years ago. BUT ANYWAYS!!! her e are my questions: is it SAFE to do gymnastics o n grass AND where would i be able to buy a mat AN D about the aireal, i try to go FAST but i always get tooooooo scared and at about the same time both fe et go off the ground on the beginning, my hands go d own. how can i not be scared?
eeeerrrmmm.......i started doing aireal cart rwheels since.....yesterday!!! and i can almos t do it but its my hands! wenevr i try to do 1 my frien d says im soaring throught the air lol and thats pr etty true cos wen he videod me i was like superman. i get enuf speed n distnce but i cant get the height or the spin to pull the move off.wat do u hav to do wi d ur hands n ur hed cos wenevr i do it it feels like my hed is gona hit the ground,is it cos i aint got nuf h eight or fast ennuf spin????????????????????? ???????
One thing you want to always remember with aeria ls is just because you are not putting your hands d own doesn't mean you are not using them. Either pu ll them either side of your torso for lift if you ha ve trouble with your height or pull them under you if you have trouble with distance. If you're havi ng trouble with both you are probably not kicking your back leg high or hard enough. When you do get t his move down though try doing it with your hands b ehind your back... just remember to set it high an d far and keep your shoulders up (by not looking at the floor) or it'll all end in tears.
1. Act like you are about to do a cartwheel. 2. D o cartwheel but put hands behind back when in air 3. Land with opposite foot that jumped with. 4 . There you go!
I really need help with the aerial. I cant seem to bring my legs over. I dont know if im to anxious abo ut cracking my neck or if i just cant do it in genera l. please, someone help me out.
The most easiest way to pull this move of is to thr ow a spinning round house kick with the left leg th en filp over sideways and make sure you look down t hen land on your other side.
Whenever i try this, i always end up putting my ha nd on the ground. Any tips? By the way, which way sh ould i look, some people tell me forward, some tel l me down. If n e 1 can help me, id appreciat it! By e!!!!!!!
ello, I'm new to these kind of things and I'm still not even quite sure what a power cartwheel is... But anyway, could anyone tell me a simple, quick way to improve my height? Also , if anyone has any good advice or tips for a beginner like me, That would be really helpful.
