This move is also commonly referred to in my Capoeira class as a "Fruit Picker"

the original name is Envergado, named after the inventor. You can see this movement, at http/members.tripod.com/~capoeirabrasil under the movies section

Double leg 540-any tips?
by novilho on 2001-05-25
The double leg 540 or armada dupla has eluded me for ages. Does anyone have any tips? I can do a high 540, a jump twin front kick (toe touch) and a 360 (amongst other things). I've tried launching it like a 540 but it comes off badly with me crashing into the floor. Any ideas?

tips
by Jedi_Trickz on 2001-05-28
Kinda set it up like a 360 or 720 with a skip step, instead of like a 540.

540
by noone on 2001-07-17
If you can do a normal double leg, you should be able to do the 540, just don't lean back as much, and throw your hips around more, also focus more on height.

Closed legs
by Floh on 2001-10-14
Sometimes I can do the doubleleg, but sometimes when I try the doubleleg I open my legs and do an ugly Jumpkick. Does anybody know some help for me? Thanx.

Doubleleg
by Adam on 2002-07-12
I don't like to refer to this move as a doubleleg 540 becuase it is not like a 540. I instead believe a doubleleg 540 is the same thing as a parafuso (capoiera name) As you take off similar to a 540 with the front leg straight and use the back leg to catch up in the air. On the contrary a doubleleg is a kick that the legs jump, kick, and land together, and are reasonably close at all times. I also don't think that this move should be referd to as a 360 with both legs. A 360 is a kicking motion and the doublelg is a more acrobatic flip. When most people try to do it for the first time they think ok it is a 360 with 2 legs which you set up like a 360 (totally wrong) and lean forward in a vain attempt to get you legs higher instead try to do a tucked doubleleg at first then as you get that work on the main doubleleg by extending your legs (I know it's scary!!) The 2 most important points are not to lean forward and to concentrate on whipping your arms and digging in so you can jump high and get max air. The hardest part for me was the landing!!!

Adam is right
by Floh on 2002-08-05
That's was my mistake too. Coming from Taekwondo I thought about the armada dupla like a jump kick. But better think about a move to jump over something.

Here is my advice:
Run. Run fast (you can reduce it to an sidestep when you can do the right technique - but do it on mats, trust me). Do a small jump, land with both legs almost together. No jump hard WITH BOTH LEGS STRAIGT (that's very important, if you trained some jumpkicks with one leg jumping the other kicking your legs will not stay together in the air, see above ;-) ). Now the scary part: LET YOUR LEGS STRAIGHT (difficult if you trained some mortals before). If you let your legs straigt and together, you get this "flying feeling" and you will do this flip very easily. Sometimes is also good if you imagine to "kick" your closed, straigt legs over your head.

Strangly, I can't think when I do this move. I start, jump, there is nothing, I'm in midair with a "flying feeling", again nothing, land. So think about the right technique just before you jump.

I think a tucked doubleleg is much more difficult than a normal doubleleg because if you tuck your legs you don't get this flying feeling (is there somebody laughing???) because there is nothing to "pull" you in the air. But to overcome the fear you can tuck your legs but I'm sure you have to use your hand when you land.

So, train hard and don't forget this "flying feeling" ;-)

"Fruit Picker?" Gay!
by Evan on 2002-09-08
Dudes! Everyone knows that you can't have both legs off the ground, unless you are stittng down. You freaks think you are so bad-ass, and pretend you can do a double-leg anything! You probably think you can stick to walls and jump over building like me and other ninjas, but the truth is that you are just earth-bound karate mortals. Kiaih!

Armada dupla vs double leg
by Meninao on 2002-12-25
I think the true capoeira armada dupla is different from the double leg I often see in videos on the web and as described above. In capoeira you can't take a run up and jump into it like a flip, you need to throw it with less momentum and more sideways than forwards, like a parafuso. Its quite like the difference between an au sem mao and a gymnastic aerial.

I've never heard the term Envergado, or any move being named after a capoeirista for that matter.

by gand on 2003-02-08
what do you think about it:
I've made a big snowball and i've rolled my back on it - really cool :D and it helps !

The name of this movement
by Phoenix on 2003-03-09
The person who is credited with inventing this movement (I think back in the 70's) is a Capoeirista named Contra-Mestre Envergado. He visited our Capoeira class a long time ago and explained the name of the movement.

Originally, he called it Armada Dupla, but he decided afterwards (with the help of his mestre) to rename the movement to "Envergado", after himself. Unfortunately, in the Capoeira world, the move is still referred to constantly as Armada Dupla. To me, Envergado is just a much stronger sounding name.

double leg
by JOHN on 2003-03-18
I just about perfected this kick, according to the standards set around me, to the point where i can land it every time i try. All I need to work on is getting my body higher off the floor to get more height. After that, it's going into my escrima stick form.

Double Leg
by Leo on 2003-04-09
Remember...height without rotation means nothing. You have to set it up so when you reach the apex of your jump you have already twisted half way. Now the only way is down and providing that you got enough twist you will land safely.

Armada Dupla
by KaibutsuX on 2003-04-19
Seeing as most slaves played capoeira with their ankles and wrists shackled, the armada dupla would fit perfectly in this form. (Legs and arms moving together very tightly)

Do you really think the 70's were the first time anyone ever thought about doing a double legged 540? This move was "invented" in Brasil.

Legs Up
by Shuri_Dude on 2003-04-30
I can pretty much do this flip. it took me a little while jsut to get the arch and the spin, but when i do it i dont put my legs straight. i keep them tucked... any advice?

making "prequel" moves!
by Macaco Branco on 2003-05-14
Hi guys, love the move and there is no way for me to do it cause I just feel awkward when putting the legs together and then don't know how to strafe both of them in one side :(
Other than that what people usually try to do is have someone bend over in front of them ;) and then doing the dupla on the guy's back. After many times and IF you know how to do a parafuso then I believe that it would be easy to do this move... any other suggestions so as how not to feel like a complete chickenshit and do the movement??? (that last part is for me!)

I need Help
by Joe on 2003-06-05
How do you get your legs to come over your body? Can anyone email me with some tips? thanks

Fruit Packer
by Gene on 2003-07-23
The most important thing i've found is spinning momentum. Running fast makes you go forward too much and makes it easier to lose control.Act like ur doing a spin kick and remember to use ur hips to spin. Try and straghten ur legs too, it looks bad if ya dont. Peace

HELP!!!!!!!!!
by Anonymous on 2003-07-27
I am a tae kwon do practitioner, and therefore hardly any of these tricks are relevant to the martial art-a kip up is the only one I can do and I had to teach myself to do that. However, I have just seen a joe eigo video and the double leg looks amazing when done right. I have tried jujimufu's tutorial on the double leg, but despite following every step I simply can't get my legs up in the air. I can do the upper body movement and leg movement separately, but when it comes to putting them together it just doesn't happen. I can jump just over one foot standing-is this a problem? Please reply and let me know what I'm doing wrong, and if there are any other exercises I have to do in order to master this really cool trick. Thanks.

Triple Leg
by threelegged on 2003-07-27
A triple leg is very easy if you already have a double leg. First you have to watch some porn videos and after that basically do a double leg, only that now it will be a triple leg.

Slaves didn't perform envergado
by Phoenix on 2003-08-25
Hey KaibutsuX, you're right in saying that most slaves played capoeira with their wrists shackled, but you have to remember that the capoeira the slaves played was Capoeira Angola, the slower style. Angoleiros never leave the ground.

Capoeira Regional, the style with the fast kicks and aerial movements (like Envergado), was created during the 1930's by Mestre Bimba, and I believe Envergado was created sometime in the 70's. This move didn't exist within the African slave community.

I think Van Damme does this move at the end of "No Retreat, No Surrender"... Both legs in the air together, side-on at a guy bouncing back off the ropes, a little like how Booker T. applies his "Harlem Sidekick".

Armada Dupla/Double Leg 540
by Pirata on 2003-10-02
First of all. A parafuso is a completely different move than the double leg 540. It's closer to a crescent 540 (one kick comes around like a crescent kick (armada) the second leg turns over and kicks downward like a roundhouse kick (martelo)

Second. The armada dupla is a move I have been able to teach a lot of people of varying skill levels. Take what you like from this or ignore it:

Leaning forward will get you hurt. This move is not about leaning, it is about two things: 1) Lift and 2) Rotation
1. Pick a spot on the floor a short distance away and at a light run advance on that spot without looking away.
2. When a few feet away, Skip (so that your feet barely leave the ground) ONTO that spot so that both feet touch the spot at the same time
3. Jump STRAIGHT UP as high as you can pushing with both feet. Whip your shoulders in a circular motion toward the ground.
This will get you the lift from your legs and the rotation from your arms.

TRAINING TIPS: Have a partner bend over into an L-shape facing to the side and practice using him/her to line up. You can practice rolling over his/her back to get the feel of it.
You can also stack up kicking mats (or something similar) to help prevent injury and improve height.

Hope that helps.

Envergado was a capoeirista from grupo capoeira brasil who performed this move for the first time in 1986, thus this move is named after him.

DoubleLeg/ArmadaDupla/Envergado
by Anonymous on 2004-02-05
I highly doubt of the many possible jumps and kic ks the human body has been able to perform...that this movement was first done in 1986. I know all ab out envergado...hell ..I am part of Grupo Capoei ra Brasil..the reason the move is famous may be be cause of him..while touring with DanceBrazil al l over the world. it was the first time I saw it live ...he did them all across the stage..like 5 times back to back. It was crazy...

One of the keys t o doing it that I learned..is leaning back a littl e bit. I had been attempting it for years..but I fi nally go the right feeling when leaning back..no run necessary ..just a side step into position(g oing into armada)...bend legs and oh yeah...you gotta use those arms to launch you.

:)
