Au Batido Help

Re: au batido help

You mustn't jump on your hand planted on the ground; do it more like a cartwheel, train to do and hold the Lex (au batido) in slow motion.

I've done the jumping too, and my shouldermuscles also went sore.

Good Luck

a good way to start off doing the au batido is to use a chair or a bar to grab ahold of with the other arm to keep steady. this will help you get your leg higher withough falling down. after you get used to it you can try it without the bar or chair.

Trying to learn Au Batido

Initially, try to grab the ground with one hand and to kick with the opposite leg in the direction of the higher shoulder. For me, the key is the feeling of your body position, it's very important to understand with your entire body every move. You must to know what is your position without watch it in a mirror.

Au Batido
by Mandrake on 2002-07-19
Most people who have problem to get their legs to the body make a familiar mistake. They try to go sidewards to the body, a thing wich almost noone actualy can do. The movement is mor like pulling your knee to your chest. So the leg comes from the front.. not the side...

Wrong Name

What everybody seem to refeering to is the au batido. However the au malandro (cartwheel trickster, roughly translated) is an inplace cartwheel. Several cartwheels(or rather a sort of macaco (where you throw yourself into the flip from standing)) are done in a row whitout moving away from the spot where you started.

What I do is when I am aboujt to do this trick I start by moving myself to the left( I am right handed)and then I put my right hand down on the ground. And then whip my legs over.

by klaus on 2002-10-14
the l kick is really easy, all you have to do is practice, i got mine by swinging my arm up to get momemtum and sa soon as i put my arm down i stopped the momemtum and my legs follewed since then i just kept perfecting it, but i also can stay there for a while but cant stay raelly long, any tips?

Au Batido
by The Apostle on 2002-10-14
This kick is reletively simple, I did it first try. I saw it in a book and was hitting my bag in my yard when I just decided to do it. It was easy and I liked it b/c it was tricky. But if there are any of you who are having trouble, there is some sound advice.
First of all kicking in thin air all the time is bad for all your muscles and joints, it is called extending them. I recomend kicking a bag, but if you don't have one, use a door (Just kick it open and make sure everyone knows what you are doing so they don't get kicked)or anything that will give resistance, not only will this give the feel of a real impact, you will also strenthen your muscles by what is known as Isometrics.

a good(ish) tip is to get a mate to hold your other arm (by the wrist) as you execute the kick. That way you can find your balance easier.

Au Batido
by James on 2002-11-29
I learned this move in a capoeira class I was in about 4 years ago, it took me 5 months to finally master and I can only do it on my left hand, but ever since I've always been able to execute it, no matter how long it had been since the last exhibition...the only suggestion I have is to keep trying it, no one can really help, you have to just keep trying and one day it'll pop into place.

. . . .
by Meninao on 2002-12-25
First I don't know why this is listed under a 1990 au batido as the "1990" implies the move is spinning, which I've seen one breaker do in a double legged pike au batido.
I think the key to this move is good shoulder strength and flexibility. Stretch your shoulders out and make sure you can hold your weight on one arm for at least a few seconds(try from a handstand against a wall).
The kick comes more forward than to the side of the body so you knee comes close to the nipple, stretch the legs too.
I'm just finally getting this on my left hand after a couple years being able to do it on the right, I blame my pathetically weak left arm.

Au Batido tip
by Anonymous on 2003-05-12
This is how you will get better at au batido.1. when you put your hand on the ground you have to make sure it's flat not on your finger tips. 2. you have to look up dont look down or at a mirror. 3. try to bring you leg to your chest. To do this you have to look up and turn your body toward the ceiling. 4. release the move the same way you went into it. You come out of it a lot smoother that way

Is there any site with pictures to go along with the au batido tutorial? Cause i used to use Juji Mufu's site but then it went down...which sucked big time...And everytime i try to do an A.B., i juss end up making a human x with one arm on the ground...unlike the A.B. at all..

Capoeria Kick explained
by Carlo Thomas on 2003-06-05
I find that the easiest way to learn this kick is to
1 - Learn a hand stand
2 - Try to remove one hand to practice your balance and be confident on the one hand.
3 - If your left hand is down, twist your hips to the left and drop your right leg behind your head and do it over and over again and eventually you find it one of the easiest kicks to perform

I've never seen a movie clip au batido, but heck, I made up a pretty interesting move. It's a sort of one handed (planted on the ground) flashkick, but it's inverted near the end. So your leg goes up at about chin level then starts going inverte for about 45 degrees of your full backflip rotation, then straightens out and you land fighting stance. It works well, but not practical for fighting.

1990 au batido
by Anonymous on 2003-07-24
"1990" is the break dance term
"au batido" is the capoeira term

See also "2000" or "2001". Capoeira has the aforementioned "au malandro" which reqires more shoulder strength, but often looks cooler ;)

good au batido(nike) instruction
by ben on 2003-08-07
I teach capoeira at the college I go to, right now I'm home for the summer in northern VA if anyone needs help I fool around on some grass with friends all the time. I can do lots of tricks and this one is so basic in capoeira I often forget about it entirely, instead filling my jogos with butterfly twists and such, but I've taught some people to do it on their first try. Let's imagine going down on your left like the guy at the top of this page. Best to start out with another move that my teacher called the "chair". It looks like the thing skateborders do, just pull both legs to your chest completely bent. You're in a ball, and don't try to hold it more than half a sec. Put your free hand on your right shin only to LOOK like it pulled your legs in, your legs really did everything on their own, but it looks better that way. From here you can later point those legs straight up suddenly and do a one handed handstand but we're on the au batido SO: stand normally. Take a small step forward with your left foot. keep your right hand somewhere in front of you and don't think about it, nor your left leg. Just lean over and go NOT TOO FAST onto your left hand and kick your right leg behind your right shoulder as if trying to knee yourself in the right ear (but don't please!) DO IT FAST, like an actual kick. Go onto the HAND slow or medium, make sure you go vertical enough, but once in the air throw the LEG FAST, and pull it back down to your right to catch your self even faster. Keep it straight the WHOLE time, trying to snap it or kick something with it right now isn't gonna help. And it's ok if you can't get it very close to your ear just yet. There is a way to use a wall to help you, and if anyone has a buddy, there's a way for a second person to help you practice them that really REALLY REALLYYYY helps, but for now, I'll assume you're alll alone. :*-( The WHOLE time, you have about 85% of your attention/concentration in that right leg, you must be visualizing yourself HAMMERING it back down to the right even as you're just bringing it off the ground. Think about the end of this move even as you begin it, if you HAVE to go too far or not far enough, not far enough is better in the long run. Later you'll be able to go all the way over on purpose, land gently on that right leg and stand back up, but going back to the right usually looks cooler, cause you SNAP it back down all violently. The WHOLE TIME see yourself throwing it back down, you don't wanna go all the way over to the left and end up falling, keep a little tension in it. SNAP it. As you get better, hold it there a little longer. When you're ready, and have the muscle strength, put the leg in FRONT of your right shoulder and put your hand on top. Now you're not KICKING it anymore, you're swinging/placing it in front of you very controlled. The man in the red gi at the top of this page is reaching around and grabbing his LEFT leg. Honestly, I've never seen anyone else do that, I tried it and it isn't that much harder, but the more comfortable way is to just rest your right hand on the back of your right knee. If you start to go to the left, push your hand with your leg, if you start to fall back to your right, pull harder with your hand. Try to stay up for a good two seconds. One of my favorite moves is to go into the au batido, then land slow and soft but immediately go into an arial (no handed cartwheel) to my right. It flows nicely.

Heavenly Au Batido
by Eli Capoeirista NZ on 2003-12-04
AU Batido is a wicked move all about style...but even using proper technique (planting yor hand with bent elbow before kicking) you will still cause a strain on your hip joint. If you plany your left hand you will strain the left hip. So practice but gently, when you have mastered the move only use it occasionally . Try AU Batido into a handspin...if that's too easy try a second Au batido ot of the hand spin!
May the force be with you...always.

Au Batido
by Kosh on 2004-05-24
I can do this move to an acceptable level, but in t rying to figure it out came up with a few tips.

1. Try this exercise. Stand with your leg on a tabl e or whatever and stretch your leg...easy...but instead of trying to touch your chin onto your kne e, try and touch the side of your head against your knee. So you have both arms on one side of you exten ded leg. Does that make sense? The point is to teac h your body where your batido leg goes in relation to your head and shoulder. Try to mimic the motion of the batido when you do the stretch - so extend on e arm out behind you as if you where planting your h and.

2. When you do the move, try to look up / at your feet at the moment the batido occurs. A good w ay to help this is to touch your foot with your hand . Twisting your body away from the ground is kind o f trick at first but it is important. Its all in the hips.

3. Dont think about your supporting ha nd, if you do you'll collapse (especially if you a rent very strong like me).

if the trouble is with your supporting arm calla psing, then all you have to do is forget about that arm, if you know what i mean.

if the problem is nt that, then try doing the move while holding som eones hand. You and your partener stand face to fa ce, you grab their hand and do the batido. try to pu t you kicking foot on top of your partner's hand an d keep it there for a bit. Stay relaxed, else you wi ll waste energy and be more likely to hurt you musc les.

by miroku on 2004-08-01
HA! capoeira isnt weak. just because it has some flashy aesthetic moves(im not even sure to call t hem moves)doesnt mean that the whole art is weak. the main thing to remember is that its not the mart ial art, its the martial artist

by inuyasha on 2004-08-03
yea it sucks the best person who does this would g et destroyed by prob the worst black belt in tkd or kung fu u tell me can u do a abatido and hurt someone can u sweep some one with a helicopter NO this art i s for show and will always be that way i want a lot of people to elaborate your opinoin in a better way a nd state more facts shell i do the same

by miroku on 2004-08-04
since u want facts i'll give u one. first off, im s ure u know wat a front snap kick and i'd say that thi s kick is very effective in the damage u can do with it while not even being able to kick all that high. in capoeira this move is called a bencao. one diff erence though is that u kick with a more harmful ar ea of ur foot, the heel. like i said before, its not the martial art, its the martial artist. last thi ng, in my opinion the moves of an art r much less imp ortant the its basic principles chase

capoeira dangerous?
by Anonymous on 2004-08-25
ummm just from what i remember capoeira was orig inally invented as a fighting style that looked l ike a dance because at the time the people who inve nted capoeira were under control and not allowed to have any kind of fighting style the whole point of capoeira was to have some kind of sharp object f or example a razor blade attached to their feet an d kick someones ass with ur knife feet!!! HUAH but yeah so in that case capoeiras moves are supposed to look non threatening but with the right equipm ent and the right fighter it can be extrememly men acing

try it like this...
by Koeryn on 2004-08-29
The way im learning it, and it really does work cu z i just did my first one like, 30 seconds ago.

First, you wanna do this the way you would usually do cartwheels. I do em to my left so: go like you wou ld for a handstand, but only put your right hand do wn, and kick up your left leg high! When thatleg ge ts up, kick up your right leg, and switch hands, an d you should look up from the ground. Thses two ste ps together will open your hips better, and give y ou better extension on your kick! then yuo just go down. Takes some practice, and mine needs some wo rk, but still, good way to do it.

Weak Coepeiria??!!
by Koeryn on 2004-08-29
OMG where the hell have yuo been?
haev you ever seen Coepeiria against another martial art? THE RE INSANE! ref drops hand, and the Cap guy is flyin g across the ring, wraps his legs around the oppen ent and starts pummeling like crazy! not to menti on the fact that once the oponent is off balance li ke that, lean back and twist and yank with legs whi le dropping your body weight, and your going to kn ock your opponent on his face.

this is NOT a we ak art dude.

AU BATIDO- RELAX!!!!
by Anonymous on 2004-09-23
people who think this move is really hard have to be kidding. The reason you people are not getting it is because u are tense! relaaax your arms and le t them fall down is an ARC on your side and just kick your legs in a L shape. I can stay in this move for ab out 10 seconds at most. If u r not flexible,
keep on attempting the splits until you can do them, th en try this move. Peace.
