hi my name is
melisa. i have been in gymnastics for about 5 months. i still can't get it.
my friends are all getting it and i am in a very stupid stuation. if u can help me please send me as much infornation as u can.
thankyou. melisa
i think the best way to start is by getting a good backbend. if you have access to a pool try it there first. i recomend starting with a grassy incline. just hop up and arch your back. let your hands touch and then roll down your stomach. this will really help you with overcoming backward fears. you could also try it with a roundoff first to relieve some fear and add momentum. you only have to do it once then all fear is over. go for it and good luck! any other questions, clarifications or training methods just email me. -the tkd freak
hi i need help big time! i want to try out for cheer leading and i'm not good at all..i need to learn all the stuff like back flips, bends, handsprings, it all...can you please please help. cheering is my dream
do uyou have a good backbend yet? the better your back flexibility, the easier this is. you dont really have to jump much just throw your arms in a half circle and backbend...keep treying it and if you need and help or got any questions feel free to email
Hate to break it to you all but this move is too easy. I learned how to do this in less ten 30 minutes. Remember, the only thing that keeps you from going back is your own fear. You have to get very emotion before you jump. Get angry or something. Think of the emotion and when you feel like that emotion is going tro blow, bend your knees jump up and think bend your back and flip your arm over your head. and turn your head. You would automatically go over. I f you crqsh, don't get scared. Get that mental edge and try again!
Help! I need help with my back handsprings because i suck at them! i am worried that i might get kicked off the team! i dont think i will, but just to be on the safe side..... HELP ME PLEASE!
Having a spotter helped me. also if you can video tape yourself that can help. it was awhile before I realized I was piking instead of stretching out. sometimes seeing what you look like in comparison to someone who can do one is enough to fix some problems. this is especially true if you have the flexibility and strength, but not the "air-sense" to know what your body is doing or what it needs to be doing to do a move correctly.
Well, there is a lot to say about the back handspring but some good and fun facts are that even though the back handspring is easier then a back flip it requires better technique.. The reason to that it you don't need the explosive power you need in a tuck.. So you might say it's harder but easier :) Well to learn it there are better and even better ways to learn it.. The best way is to have a spotter as my friend Zolt says.. For the safest way to learn it you need 3 things.. A good and educated spotter (Like me:) a padded incline and/or a foam pit or pool.. Start off with going to your friends pool and start diving or flipping backwards in to the pool (to get over the back flip fear and to get control in the air) You'll need it!! Do this for at least a day (over 10 hours) Good thing here is to have the spotter (educated trainer) to tell you here the flaws and the wrongs.. Then go home and get the bed mattress and go to a pretty good hill with a nice incline... Not to much but not to little...Then have the spotter and friend help you the first times until you fell comfy in the air then just have the spotter help you.. the just minimize the incline until you can do it on top.. When you are on top do the handsprings on grass with the spotter (ONLY ONE) for about a week with about 3 hours a day then you can add another one.. (YES, YOU GOT THE BACK HANDSPRING!)
If you need additional help just e-mail me at fta@home.se Good Luck!
Hey I really need to learn how to do a back handspring b/c I just had tryouts and I used a spot and well I got graded poor and well next year it is my last year as a jr.High cheerleader and I want to get head but I need to learn some tumbling (good tumbling ) first and if you could please e-mail me some basic things to get me started please!
How flexbible or strong is your back? If you match these qualities then I suggest trying to do a back hand spring in place. In your standing position try to bend back so that you are able to land the bridge position. It may be difficult at first, but it'll help you in the long run. As you progress I suggest having a really good spotter and have an object placed behind you, like mats stacked up on one another, so that it forces you to not touch the object. This will help you on reach, control and confidence. Mainly, it is fear that prevents us from doing athletic manuvers. But as they say "If you fail, try and try again." GO - TEAM! :)
When you squat down to take off, make sure you're leaning slightly back as if you're going to sit in a chair. Now as you jump backwards, keep your arms straight and as close to your head as possible. Arch your back as much as comfortably possible. Let your legs follow your body. Don't try to curl them under you. As soon as your hands touch the floor, snap out of the handspring the same as you would a round off. It would be best to have someone spot you on your back and legs the first few times.
Capoeira has a series of progressive moves to help you back handspring. The first is a macaco or monkey flip. Squat down and put one hand behind you. Now reach the other hand over to the first and go into a kind of wierd cartwheel. Step two is to keep your legs together and move them sideways instead of cartwheeling them. Step three is to mix one and two together, so you reach back like the second with legs together, but try to get it up like a cartwheel. It's kinda hard to describe, but just play about with it. Also really hop off your feet when you go back, this will get you used to the spring. Step four involves doing these moves with a hop and trying to reach more and more overhead instead of to the side. Your planted hand will rotate when you go over automatically, so don't worry about that. Just try to plant the second hand on the other side of the first so they're shoulder width apart and in parallel to your shoulderblades. Again, play about with the moves- this will build confidence and get your body used to the idea as well as training your muscles. Step five is to do this from standing, sitting into a crouch, leaning back and going into a rear cartwheel. The more energy you put into this the better. After a bit of practise, you'll probably have something that looks a bit like a slanted back handspring or round off going backwards. Now all you have to do is straighten up those shoulders on take off and you'll go over straight. Mats help. Spotters help too. Your fear should have faded a bit by now and since you're body's got used to the idea, you should be able to do it. The best way to stop it becoming an automatic thing to go slanted is to become competent going over both sides. Then when you feel ready, just go for it and don't decide which way to lean. This is the hard bit, but watch others do the move- on video in slo-mo if possible. Watch how the arms swing and how they generate the momentum. Just keep playing with the movement- eventually something will click into place and you'll just go over backwards and do a proper back handspring.
i read a bunch of the questions about the back handspring. and i know that everybody can do it. all you have to do to get ready for one is lie flat on the ground, then do a bridge. if you can do that you can do a handspring, because that is a similar position to it. now that you did that go up a small hill. face the top, and have somebody like 10 feet behind you. then just lean back and kick your feet up in the air, if you make it at least to your knees you can do it, if not just keep trying and you will get it. i know that because i am a varsity gymnast at my high school, im a sophmore.
matt, dont mean 2 bag ur explanation, but to any1 trying this for the first time, "lean back and kick your feet up" may make them pike.Try to throw ur upper body back and try 2 plant ur hands where your feet were...ur legs are kinda dragged - you only need to push off a little. As ur legs come over u'll find the weight momentarily eases off ur hands...this is when u push away from the ground, and hopefully land it...dont concentrate too much on landing it at first tho',just get over onto ur knees, like matt said.
YOU STAND UP AND PUT YOU HAND ON THE GROUND AND YOU LAND IN A BACK BEND THEN FLIP YOUR LEGS OVER YOUR HEAD. FOR A BACK WALKOVER ALL YOU DO IS THE SAME EXCEPT YOU FLIP ONE LEG OVER AT A TIME LIKE YOU ARE WALKING. TRUST ME ON THIS I AM A 6 YEAR GYMNASTIC.
is there a weight limit to doing a back hang spring i want to learn how to do onw but im to afraid to try im afraid ill land on my head but if i get some good tips ill get the courage to try it please help me out

To increase your back flexibility get into the bridge position (sometimes called crab position) so your arms and legs are on the ground and your stomach is pushed up in an arc towards the ceiling. Once you are up, walk your legs towards your hands so that your arms become less horizontal and more vertical. After practicing for a while when you can walk your legs about 12" away from your hands, try to spring your legs over your body - towards your hands so that you land upright on your feet. This can be done by kicking one leg up first whilst in the bridge and then when it is vertical, kick the other up following it round. Once you are able to to this, all you need to do is be able to bend backwards into the bridge position. This requires a lot of confidence and it is best to practice on something soft. To start with, get into a low stance by opening up your legs a shoulder width apart and bending them. Now, twist to one side and put the same side arm back down to touch the floor and follow it with the other arm. Once you have mastered this, try getting into a low stance again and going over slowly backwards letting both hands hit the floor at the same time. Now your hands are on the floor, use the previous technique of walking your feet up to your hands and flip them over your head. After lots of practice you should eventually be able to drop your hands backwards over your head landing them close to your feet and then be able to spring your legs backwards over your hands landing upright. With lots of practice you can do this is one flowing motion. It will take time for your back to become more flexible so be patient and practice lots on something soft.
Hi I'm 25 and I just started taking gymnastics for the first time. So, I was wondering if you could please send me any info on how to do a back handspring and any exercises I could do at home to help.I need help! e-mail me please! titanicsmile@yahoo.com
i want to do learn how to do this move and sometimes i get it spot on. But 99% of the time i do the move but my head just scraps or touches the ground. i have been on my high school cheerleading squad for two years but i have been on jv. I really want to make varsity this year cuz tryouts are next week but they want everybody to attempt to learn a standing back handspring. I have never tried one and I am scared. i can get into a backbend but that is it. Also i am kind of heavy so i think that this might be keeping me from doing a back handspring. can somebody help me. getting this handspring and being on varsity means more to me than anything and i really want to be able to do this.
I can do PERFECT back handsprings into a pool, but the second I take two steps away from the pool I can't do it! I should have gotten over the fear by now. I am not scared when I do it into a pool, but am when I do it on land:-( I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!
YOu're problem isn't fear. It is easier to do a back-handspring into the pool. When you go on the land it is 10X harder becouse you use your arm strength when you do the "spring" part of the backhandspring. In a pool you just jump backwards. you don't have to "spring" with your hands. This means you might not have developed you're are strength or back flexibility. So a good way to practice is by doing a handstand; the core of gymnastics.
hey. i'm a cheerleader at my high school and next week we are

Hey, i have been a varsity cheerleader for about 2 yrs now, and our coach has started having our team go to a gymnastics class to learn backhandsprings (etc) i can do a BHS perfectly on the trampoline, but when i go on the floor i really undercut myself and when i land it, my elbows are really bent and have trouble pushing off to be able to stand up. can you please tell me what i can do to fix this problem and get a perfect (not undercutted) backhandspring. Also if you can tell me how to do a back layout that would be very much appreciated. ~laura

Hey I am Shandra, I have taken gymastics for a long time at a very great gym who is sponsored by USA gymnastics. To make your backhandspring better: 1) first of all you need to be able to do a backwalkover. 2) If you compare 2 persons who does a backhandspring, being able to do a backwalkover, and not being able to do a backwalkover, the person who can do the backwalkover will have the better backhandspring. 3) You need to have great flaxibility in the shoulders and back. you should do a brige everyday to increase this. 4) when you are ready to do a backhandspring you need to stand upright, hands tight above your head. 5) swing your arms back, and bend down into a sitting position. 6) then swing your head back and arch your back. 7) your head should have swung back. 8) then tap your hands on the ground and stand up. 9) You need to have a rebound out of your handspring because if you are going to be doing a combination such as (roundoff backhandpsring back tuck) you need rebound. *Doing a roundoff backhandpsring the round off is the most difficult skill. it contains over 400 different parts and the backhandpring includes 40. after the roundoff you will have plenty of momentum to do the handpsring.* Thanks
Hi.. I'm a JV Cheerleader and one of our goals is for group backhandsprings.. It's not necessary, but I want to learn it anyway! I'm really flexible but when I do my backbend I feel like my arms are too bent together... And I have a mind boggling fear that I won't land on my hands when I try.. Also I feel like I'll bend my arms and my head will hit the ground when I try it.. can anyone please send me any info and help! Thanks so much!
Hey! I finally have been able to do a back bend! Here's how I did it: stand right against a wall, then take about two regular steps forward. Lean back until you can touch the wall with your hands. The next thing is to walk your hands down the wall while walking your feet forward. If you can't make it all the way down to the floor, just stop and hold yourself there for fifteen seconds. That way, your back will have been stretched and you'll get the hang of being hanging upside down. If you can make it to the floor, congrats! Keep on doing this, but when you start, start further away from the wall so you can get the hang of free falling for a few milliseconds. Trust me, it might seem scary but its fun and much easier than just going straight into a back bend!
Hey, I was just wondering if anybody had any tips on how to do a back walkover. There is tons of helpfull tips on back handsprings, but none on walkovers. If anybody has any tips or helpful suggestions please respond. Thanks!

I woke up this morning and thought, "I wanna do a back handspring". So, thats all the experience I have with the move! Anyone know the best course of progress to condone when learning to do a back handspring? Email me at mat_brett@hotmail.com if you can spare a couple of mins, thanx.
well, it's not really quite as easy as "oh, I guess I'll do a back handspring"
First, as everyone says, you need a good back bend. The best place to improve this is where there is a mat (it's the easiest). Get into the bridge position and move your hands closer to your feet, and your arms are almost vertical, instead of bent in the bridge position.
Hi. I have been working on my backhandspring for almost a year now. I have the technique and the form and just dont seem to have enough spring! Also I need a few tips on how to do a backwalk over. I really need to know the exercises before trying out this move. Pllleeeeasaase e-mail me!!!! At usmanjunior@hotmail.com Thanx it would mean a lot to me. Peace out
First of all, get a gymnastcis coach. If you can't, here it is:
I'd definately recomend a spotter so that you don't get hurt. All they need to do is spot your lumbar spine as you go over. Start with your arms at your sides, but behind your butt. Make like you're sitting in a chair, BUT DON'T BOW FORWARD. Yes, it feels like you're going to fall on your rear, but tha't when you jump, throw your arms over your head and throw your head back. If you have a good arch and jump, at least you'll land on your hands. From there, just snap you legs down and out and land with you arms up. You should land a little less then two body lengths away, if you end where you started, you're undercutting the technique and it's a good way to injure yourself. I'd start on a Tumbletrack or soft mat, first, then move to the floor. This way, you don't wear your wrists down too much. I'd also highly recommend wearing wrist guards. I've just got this move down, and those were the steps I took...but I do have a coach.
Hey I dont know how to do a backhandsrping but I got a feeling that I can and cna anybody tell me how the spotter is supposed to spot you while you go over. That will be lots of help.
if u wanna do a back handspring its not that u think about landin on ur head its about arm strenght me personally i can flip very good but people who cant flip worth a shit need 2 practice their jumping and try doing some pushups before flipping or trying 2 because while u r making the assumption that u are going 2 land on your head u could be practicing or warming up
i throw my head back and don't tuck i have my tuck but scared to throw it because my friend broke her ankle doing a tuck can you help me if so e mail me
Do you have any pointers for completing a backhandspring and back walkover on the balance beam. Well if you wanna learn a back hadspring you gotta first learn to do it on the tumble track aka trampoline. Well start jumping up and down count to 3 throw your ARMS into the air and flip your arms back... flip your arms back BEFORE you turn your head right when your hands touch the ground your feet should be touching the ground already. Well good luck. If you need anymore questions... email meh!!!

hey Jorden, I was scared at first doing a back walkover then my mom (who's very flexable too) told me that my hands will hold me and that i shouldent be scared. and i did it with know problem at all so if you can kick your leg over and you can go back into a backbend my standing then you can do it put the leg that you kick over with in front and leave the other one so it will be there for support to help you balance and go back and your legs will kickover by them selfs -k- this advice is for everyone who cant to a back walkover

Anyway..I just wanted to ask if this trick is real. It's called the"Moonsault" It's hard to say the detail on how to do it but i seen it done sometimes on movies(Jacky chan) Where he on a wall of some sort then jumps off and spins around with legs straight arms crossed over chest and flips around in a weird way but when he lands he is facing the wall...(Sorry if you do not understand it..I was just wondering if it was a move or not.)

i was just wondering if you could give me some tips how to do backhandsprings. i was just wondering if you could give me some tips how to do backhandsprings.
hey! i was just wondering, which one i should learn to do first, a back walkover or a back handspring? because i really don't know which one i should do in order for me to do a back handspring more easily. could someone just post an answer plz? thanx!
Renne, well theres really no right answer. I have my backhandspring, but i don't have my back walkover. If you think it'll be easier than you can but if you don't then you don't have to. IF you wanna get right to the point then just work on your backhandspring, the back walkover is just optional.. It's not a requirement!
Hey I am a cheerleader and I know how to tumble...I just need lots of info. like pics and statistics about backhandsprings for a presentation I have to do. I just need some suggestions please !! Email me at ash_sibert@hotmail.com !! Thank you so much !!
renne: it really doesn't matter which comes first, the backhandspring or the backwalkover, because i've heard of people who have done one or the other first and then they get the other skill later. But.....i've been a gymnast for 5 years and i got my backwalkover first. I think it's easier that way because in the long run, the backwalkover will help you SO much in your backhandspring. When I was in gymnastics in about my 3rd year, I still didn't have my backhandspring. (I had a roundoff backhandspring, but not standing). So, I taught myself. I know, I know, it's unsafe to teach yourself with no help or spots or even any mats. But hey, i did. All I did (be sure you TRUST YOURSELF TOTALLY) is did backbend kickovers fast untill it was like, turbo speed lol. Then you do them the same way, exept you try to jump back (so you have your feet off the ground) before my hands touched. By the time I got rid of my fear to jump backwards, I was doing a backhandspring! ~Jamie P.S. IM me on AIM at gymnastgal1101 or e-mail me at jnb1101@hotmail.com for any questions on gymnastics. I'll be happy to answer you all and give you help!
Jamie and Monica, thank you so much for your help both of u!! last night at gym, i was getting tired of being scared of going backwards for both a back walkover and BHS so i just went back and did it!! thank you so much!!! Renne
Renne, I'm extremely proud that you have your walk over! I'm glad that I could help you with your little situation, later and If you have any more questions in the past E*mail me, I'll be glad to help you. After all, you did accomplish something, why not accomplish something Harder? Always here to help, Monica

one good tip on how 2 do a good back bend is get one of the hard types of mats. push urself ^ into a bridge, with ur feet still on the mat, when ur ready just kick over. this also works with back bends and back walkovers. if u have n e questions e~mail me @ hrtbreaker11789@aol.com

hey guys, i finally got my backhandspring and backtunck on monday, after following the advice on www.trickstutorials.com, i just got my friend to spot me, and i did it, after three goes with him, i tried a b/handspring without him an it worked, then all i did was jump higher and tuck to get the back tuck, the best thing for learning these moves isnt a flexable back, its a good spotter.

I have my back handspring and my back tuck perfectly but i need help on my layout. i need to know how to make a complete rotation instead of going halfway and falling down. thanx
if u have ur back bend it would be much easier. all u have to do is look at ur hands the whole time until it hits the ground. so bend ur knees and jump like 5 inches off the ground and u would do a nice back handspring. after u got the hang of it u could work on straightening ur legs and arms. also remember never bend ur arms. keep them as straight as possible!
I really need help on this! I can't do a handspring period! Front or back! I'm scared that I'm going to fall and hurt my neck like I did last time when i try a back handspring! And I ALWAYS fall when I try a front handspring! I wanna be a great martial artist, but martial artists have to be able to do handsprings, and I can't!
i need help with my BHS. i dont jump high enough and dont put my arms back as far as they should go. Can anybody give me some tips on how to get better or a website i could go to find out. I need to know how to do one to be a cheerleading!!!!! Thanx!!!
Ok, this is how it goes..... I go to a gym and I use to be able to do a PERFECT back handspring on the ground. Then I learned how to do it better on the trampoline. I came home and landed on my head. Ever since then, I can't do it no matter how hard I try!!! ( believe me, I tried a million times!!) I know the reason behind this (I bend my arms in the air) but have no idea how to fix it! I really want to know how to do my back handspring again. Does anyone have information for me???
I am planning on trying out for the varsity cheerleading squad at my school in a few months and my friend told me it would really help if i knew how to do a back handspring. I was told that i should know how to do a back walkover first but once i do the back bend part I cannot get my feet over what so ever, not even with a spotter helping me lift them. Is there any way that anyone can help me with this, and then let me know the next steps to doing the back handspring. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. *~Thanx Lotz~* Brandi
Yea Um I suck really bad. I get to where I have momentem and all, and when I do a back handsrping I go off to the side. Now I can do the bridge and all that Jazz, but when it comes to actually doing it I go off to the side a bit. What's my problem and how can I fix it. Thanx

Hey I've been a cheerleader for 3 yrs and i have may backhandspring but for some reason i always bend my arms and tap my head on the ground for a second it dosent hurt or anything and when i lock my arms my wrist hurts! If you have any suggestions that would really help thanx And i have a suggestion for the person that said that they cant keep there legs together, my coach has us but a small stuffed animal between our feet and try to keep it there as we go over! Yo, wuz up I'm having trouble doing a back hand springs cause of my arms and fingers. I'm scared I might break my fingers when doing it wrong. I can do back flips but not really b.h.s.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to do a back flip also known as a back handspring? If you have, than read this paper it will give you a heads up on the PROPER way to get and master a back handspring. Listed below are the steps that you need to take to learn how. Read them CAREFULLY and follow them CORRECTLY or else you could get seriously injured. If you aren’t willing to do this don’t try it or else you might find yourself lying flat on your face. You wouldn’t want that would you?
If you learn this trick, you will be more flexible, stronger in your arms, legs, ankles, and wrists. It will also make you more coordinated and you can show off to all of your friends. Nah, just kidding don’t show of, just show it to them when no one else is looking so that no one begs you to do it again and again or call you a show off. Believe me on this one. I’ve had experience.
*You can only do this trick if you can do a decent cartwheel and if you have access to a clear, fairly large, safe area.
LOCATION · Clear, fairly large, safe area (preferably soft and spongy/ trampoline) MATERIALS · If at all possible a spotter (gymnastics instructor)
1. First, you find your area that meets the standards above in the materials section. Also get your instructor if you have one.
2. Second, you MUST stretch. Stretch your legs, arms, back, neck, ankles, wrist and whatever else you think might need to be stretched. You should attempt to do your splits to stretch out your legs because that is one of the best stretches that you could possibly do to your legs. Also if you want to try a Back Bend (A gymnastics stretch in which you put both of your hands and feet on the ground/floor. A.K.A.Crab) which is the most effective back stretch. Also do Push-Ups, Situps, and Crunches. You can tell that you are stretched well when you begin to hurt slightly. After you are POSITIVE that you have stretched REALLY WELL, you can continue on. If not then stretch until you have reached that point. If you skip this step you may find yourself in pain later on.
3. Third, You have to ask your instructor for help if you have one. If not then go to step four.
4. Now, take a running start and do a cartwheel. When you reach the center of your Cartwheel,(When you are basically in a handstand.) bring your legs together so they meet. Slam your feet into the ground. Don’t do it to hard or else you can get injured. Don’t do it to softly either or else there would be no use in slamming your feet into the ground. This is called a snap down. You should do it so that you get enough punch or enough snap down. off the ground to propel youinto the air not any more or not any less. After that as soon as you land jump straight up into the air. This is called a rebound. This entire step put together is called a Round Off. It helps you perform your back handspring easier and more safely. Practice this step for a while, until you are confident that you can perform it pretty well.
6. Once you master this, you can move on.. After you round-off your Back Handspring comes. From your rebound, jump backward so that you land on your hands. Try not to bend your elbows a lot. If you do you could hit your head on the surface that you are working on. Also try not to tighten your elbows too much or else you could fracture your arm. After that snap down on to your feet again so that you get the same effect as your Round-Off. That way once you master it you can do more than one. Once I did 31 in a row!!!
7. Practice this step for a while until you practically get it mastered. If you want you can add on more only after you have got the first one nailed mind you.
Did you complete all of the steps correctly? If not review the steps and try to red procedure. If you did CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have now learned how to do a running Round-Off Back Handspring!
*HELPFUL TIP!!! Videotape yourself learning and performing your trick. Watch a professional gymnast do a back handspring. Observe it closely. Compare and contrast your video to the professional gymnast. By doing this you can find your mistakes and correct them. Remember practice makes perfect so… Happy Practicing!!! and Good Luck!!!
I need help on my back bend and my back handspring, I know i need to know how to do a back bend befor I can do a back handspring! But will you please give me some tips on how to strech my back out.My mom is a coach on a cheerleading team I am on and we all have to learn how to do this. She said to lay on the ground and go in a backbend that way will that help.Send tips on both PLEASE!!
for the person who asked what a back walkover is, well it is a slow back handspring with no jump, and a step out. so instead of jumping back into a back handspring you go back into a back bend and then slowly once you have your hands on the ground you kick your legs over, and then you end up standing up.

Hi!, I really need help with my backwalkover.I need to know how to do it to move up to the next level in gymnastics. If someone could give my some advice, that would be great. Thanks a bunch!!!!!!
I can do a back bend perfectly but i cant get my feet to flip over. i also need help on a backhandspring really bad.PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! send me any advice you know.Thank you
ur not going to leanr how to do a backflip or a walkover on the net, u need someone to show you how to do it, and to tell you what ur doing wrong. ive been doing gymnastics for 10 years and i still train, i also coach gymnatics for 3 hours a week, so i know wat im talking about. a backward walkover is more difficult than a backflip, as it requires much much more flexibility, and you also need a little more strenth in the arms... and with a backflip, u do NOT arch ur back, ur supposed to have ur body in a dish/scoop/hollow (wat eva u call it) shape, other wise u will learn it messy, and the more u practice something wrongly, the more u learn to do it wrong.
i like maggets and nastey stuff i like picking up dead birds and smellin rotten eggs and peing in front of every body and doing backflips off of the side of tall buildings man. istink real bad
i've never heard of neokarate before, but now that i've been to this site and heard about it i think i would like to enter a club somewhere. problem is, i come from a rural area without a lot of martial arts clubs. i am already in gymnastics and have mastered the basic tumbling moves (backhandsprings, roundoffs, aerials.....) so i think it would give me a head start. if anyone knows how i can join a club or figure out a way to start on myself please e-mail me.
A good way to get your back limber and get a great backbend is to face your back to a wall and walk your hands down down it, slowly bending down and walking forward. This helped me out a lot in doing a back handspring.

i need help on how to get over the fear of doing a backhandspring by myself everyone thinks that i can but i am scared they say i need to just think i think i can please e-mail me with tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The way I learned this was first with my buddie but this helps also if no one is willing to help you. I practiced at home (I know some instructers tell you not to just in case you kill your self) but get or build to poles or anything else that stands straight up. Tie a rope fairly high to start, face away and do a back bend. the rope should catch you. Now find an appropriate height for you and go into the bridge over the rope now bend your knees and jump up over your arms. then come down on the other side just like you would when you do a head stand. Tada! Now practice that thirty times a day and you'll get better faster and more used to it that you won't need the rope to surpport you any more.

whats up, hey i just learned my backhand spring tonight. it took me about an hour and a half toget over my fear but heres how i did it. first try it on something soft that reduces some of the fear. but pretend someone is telling you that you cant do it so you tend to want to prove them wrong. to me i think back handsprings are friggin annoy if you compare them to back flips. back flips you just flip over and land some where on your feet or foot. handsprings you have to land on your hands and its really hard to stabilize yourself with only your hands. but thats my opinion.
Actually, practice makes perfect. If you have muscles strength in your arms than landing on your hands in the backhandspring to push your self up and off the floor is not tht hard. You just can't give up.
Ok, i really want to tryout for cheer next year, but you have to be able to do gymnastics. so if any one has any tips for how to do back hand springs, back flips, ariels, or just how to be more flexible, please email me! my email is LMsoftballgrl257@aol.com thanx!

Hi, I'm Catherine. I'm a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a Varsity Cheerleader at my high school. We've won UCA-sponsored competition because of our well-renowned gymnastics! If anyone needs help on backhandsprings or other gymnastic, email me at KickNrebelChik@aol.com!
U shouldn't hate cheerleaders just because u got stuck at the school with the apparently "prissy" cheerleaders. I'm a cheerleader and I'm certainly NOT prissy.
hi my name is loren l am just starting gymnastics l need some help could you please show me how to do the splits cause they said l must learn it by saturday gymnastics is my dream l hope it comes true, and to do the splits

Could you please give me some tips on how to overcome this and also give me some drills to practice?

hey Im going to try out for cheerleading and i know that i can do a back handspring, but i dont know the rite way to jump backwards and i am scared to jump backwards.its the grass a good place to practice? Someone PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH ANY TIPS OR KNOW HOW!!
I have read all tips on this site and i have checked the www.trickstutorials.com (a very good site) but i dont know where to start training. I dont have a pool. i would be grateful for tips! hedsson@msn.com
Tryouts are coming up and it's really important to me to make the squad this year. I am capable of doing everything, but the back hand spring. I know i'm ready but i don't know how to jump back without injury myself and landing on my hands safely, other than i'm ready. It would mean sooo much to me if someone could email me some advice! Thanks!
Hey, don't worry so much about injury's, it sounds like your scared of jumping back and landing on your hands every gymnist and cheerleader goes through this. What you want to do before you start doing back handsprings is learn and practice on doing bridges and handstands, once you have done this your back should feel more flexible and maybe even lighter(note: Do not stretch too much on the bridges). Now you're ready to flip back on to your hands,1.stand tall and slightly bend your knees but keep your back straight,2. Now swing your hands over your head but not too much, your upper body should be moving with your hands,3.Jump back as you swing your hands over your head(note:Never jump up when performing backhandsprings, or you might not land right). These steps are as simple as they can get, try not to be scared so much because the worst that can happen is that you look back when your about to jump, even then your hands WILL catch you, If you swing your hands straight back and jump back then the landing part is the least of your worry's. If you get scared or freak out when your about to jump then remember that you only have to do this once and all your fears will go away. Stay confident, your not going to die. e-mail me at hi-c@streetracing.com if you want further trainning or if you have any questions.PEACE BE WITH YOU!! :-)
If u want to be a cheerleader, u don't have to know how to do a backhandspring or anything like that. It helps alot, but u can always make the squad if ur good enough, then take a cheerleading class at a gym with ur squad. Don't stress!
i managed to finally master this move and did it just last week but now noooo i cant do it anymore, literally i CANT do it AT ALL, i dont understand what should i do?
That happened to me once, after the first week that I learned how to back handspring I stopped for a while and then tried it again but I messed up and freaked out, so what I did is-I started over from the beginning, and thats probably what you should do and stay confident 'cause if you've done it before then your hands willcatch you no matter how bad you mess up. :-) E-mail me at hi-c@streetracing.com if you got any questions or fears to get over.
I've been in gymnastics for about five or six months now and haven't gotten the backhandspring yet. Of course I haven't tried it by myself yet because I am scared to do so. I probably haven't gotten it yet because I haven't been stretching at home, and just recently started stretching. How long do you think it would take to actually fall into a backbend if I just recently started stretching my back once or twice a day???? Please e-mail me info about backhandsprings @ cool12033@mail2justme.com
I've been trying to do the backbend by letting myself down gradually from the wall but when I get all the way down I can't seem to hold myself up that well. please e-mail me to tell me what I'm doing wrong or what exercises I should do @ cool12033@mail2justme.com. thanx :)
aerials are easy 1. get a good and fast one handed cartwheel 2.take a run or few steps 3. at take off bend your knee and flex your foot 4. in the air make sure you lift your chest and keep your nose towards the floor NOT your head 5. congradulate yourself
Hi, I started trying to learn a backhand spring about 3 months ago I thought I would get it by now for sure. Anyway, I started by using my matress and jumping back onto it. So long story short I kept landing on my head and then was no longer afraid of it because it didn't hurt. So I did it without it hoping for more cleraence, I still land on my head without the matress there, I jump up my hand hit and if I stay straight and stiff come and pile driver my head. So usually I sorta roll out once I land on my head and it doesn't hurt. Thing is no matter what I do I land on my head. Even when I stay arched longer I still end up on my head. If I have my arms compleltly straight I hit and they bend and I land on my head. When i look at video of them it looks like my backflips but I try to land on my head. Possibly my back isn't flexible enough, because my legs fly up and stop my rotation and then when I come down with my legs overhead and all the weight I just come straight down. However can hold an arch position for about 10 seconds.
why is it harder to do backbends on a bed than on a floor. I don't want to try to fall into a backbend on the floor because for one my family doesn't like noise and the second thing I'm afraid I'll get hurt. please e-mail me with info on how to fall into a backbend @ cool12033@mail2justme.com
when ever I do a backbend I can do one pretty well by lying on the ground and pushing myself up. But when I do a backhandspring (with a spot of course) I fail to arch my back at all and I usually fall on my head. Do I fall on my head because I forget to arch my back or because I don't have enough strength???????? please e-mail me :)
HI I AM GOING TO TRY OUT FOR CHEERLEADING AND I NEED SERIOUS HELP TRYING TO DO A ROUNGOFF, BACKHAND SPRING,JUMPS AND OTHER THINGS CHEERLEADERS WOULD DO PLEASE HELP IM IN SERIOUS DO DO.
I have looked at this site for a while now and I have the back flexibility but when I try out the back handspring I am still to afraid to do it. When I jump I almost go into a backbend but I freak out and roll over.
I was wondering if anybody could help me on my back handspring. I have the back and shoulder flexibility but I don't have the courage. When I jump backwards I almost get into a backbend and make it but I freak out and I flip over afraid I will break my neck. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me at Coolmojo101@yahoo.com
First of all Al don't freak out, and don't start on hard surfaces. If you can, get someone who is educated in spotting a backhandspring to spot you. Where you get used to it and are not afraid to do it any more. When I first started it I was afraid to even do it with a spot but now I'm not scared at all. You could try doing this move on the trampoline if you have one or on a mat or in your local gym. You might even sign up for a gymnastics class. If you have any ?'s you can e-mail me @ mkgood10322@comcast.net
I have a problem with my backhandsping, I'm only 11, but I keep on undercutting. I think it's because my back is WAY TOO flexible. I don't know what to do. PLEEZE HELP!!!
I am sooooo thrilled of my considerably great accomplishment of learning the backhandspring that im going to have a pre-tutorial right now.
Jesus this is such a mentally nerve recking trick this as well as butterfly twist, but in honesty the butterfly twist is way worse than this. Im finally learning how to control the fear of going backwards and in reality it took me 1 day to actually learn this trick but it took me like months to learn to control the fear alil by little.
So before you attempt to just jump into this trick first we must learn the Fear behind this trick for most normal people that is. Some people can just say to themselves i want to know this trick and just jump and do it its crazy i tell you.
So heres Part one of Conquering both backwards fear and the Fear of the Almight backhandspring.
Note* i Just learnt this like a few minutes ago lol so i wont go into detail about learning the actual backspring but preparing the mind for it more so.
Ok lets take apart this mother fu****, what is the fear made up of? Well at first i thought the fear was only going backwards but actually theres a hidden fear incorprated into it and thats the fear of hitting the ground from standing.
So lets go through some drills:
First You have to make your back at leat moderately flexible. So I want all you trickster out there to start doing some serious Back bridges. Also to make your back more flexible put your feet in a bed and put your hands on the ground and do a back bridge like this and do backward push ups this will stretch your back a bit. So get comfortable with back bridges.
2. next stand next to a wall with your back facing the wall and youre a bit away from the wall bend backwards and touch the wall with your hands now slowly slide your hands down to the floor. So start doing back bridges from standing with the help of the wall.
3. Now without the wall try to do a back bridge from standing learn how to do this cause this will really help you. So just bend your back backwards look back and then bend your legs to go lower and look for the floor * looking for the floor will help you in the whole backhandspring thing*.
4. After youve gotten down this part try to feel comfortable with going back and just going into a back bridge. Now we will work on feeling comfortable with your legs going over your head. GO into a back bridge facing the wall so that your feet are on the wall.
5. With your feet on the wall kick off of the wall and back onto your feet. Now depending on your flexibilty you might have to have your feet alil high on the wall at first but slowly lower them until its flat on the ground and then kick one leg over while bending your arms to go completely over.
6. If youve gotten this far we can go alil further. Keep doing the above until you feel fairly comfortable with all of these. By doing this you have unknowingly conquered alil of the fear. It would also help alot if you do alot of handstands and stuff to feel comfortable with your bodys movements while on your hands and stuff bring up your confidence this way.
7. If youve been doing the above for awhile you can attempt the backspring now but what i did was i tried jumping into a bed backwards. So bend your legs jump straight up and try to do the same thing you did with the back bridge from standing. It will feel different because youre not actually on the floor youre in the air but it all works the same way.
PART 2- I will expand on these IDEAS EVEN MORE and I will explain exactly step by step the stages of the backhandspring. Stay tuned to this station same Kaspered time same Kaspered Place....after ive 3 quarters perfected this thing and can do it consistantly.
Can any anyone help me on my back tuck i a cheerleader and i am really good at my back hand spring but iam to scared to do my tuck ihad last week and when i tried to do it today i couldn't do it can anyone help me from me
It is not flip that is hard its getting over the fear of landing on your head (which doesnt hurt much). So when trying the first few times it might be best to do it down a hill or on a trampoline or something
I have looked at alot of the comments you people have made all over this site and most of you need help. So you should go to the forum where i am offering my advice to help you.
Nobody can learn a back handspring just by reading off a website. U goto know how its done, u cant just do a back handspring in 5 minutes. There's a helpful website,WWW.TRICKSTUTORIAL.COM full of pictures and experts to tell u how its done and how to do other cool moves. It took me 4 days to learn the back handspring.
some people are experts and others are not but the majority of the people here are not and are looking for help like me for instance and ????? is right you can't just automaticaLLY learn a backhandspring just by reading off of a website without ever seeing a backhandspring before in you life. I have seen a backhandspring done before and I have took advice for 6 months and I still can't do a back handspring HELP@!!!
I am a 52 year old gym owner and instructor. I you want me to help you learn and backhandspring, back tuck, Roundoff Backhandspring or even a full I will help you !!! I have taught hundreds of cheerleaders and gymnasts tumbling for 30 years.I will need a video tape of exactly what you are not doing to know how to help you. If anyone need help email me at JOE121851@AOL.COM be sure to place in the subject line BACKHANDSPING HELP NEEDED !! Good Luck
keep practicing arching your back and then try practicing your back walk over once you've got your backwalkover down than you have the ability to do a back handspring. The only thing you have to do after that is get overthe fear of jumping back.
I need to learn my roundoff back handspring on a gym floor w/ no mat in about 2 weeks. I've been learning them in gymnastics, but I still need a spotter on a spring floor. Can some one help me? Send me any tips or whatever at imalilangelgurl@hotmail.com
By the way, the reason I need to learn it is cuz I have a competition and we really need it. I've been taking gymnastic classes once a week and my neighbor is going to start helping me but I don't really know what I'm doing wrong...Thanx
I'm pretty close to getting my backhandspring down but rather than doing it properly I'm doing sort of a backwards dive. I'm going straight up then going straight down. Please e-mail me
Whenever I do back walkovers or back bends my muscle, the left pec, always feels really stretched and sometimes I can really hurt it. I can still do back walkovers after that but I'm wondering what the problem is. Do you think it's strength or flexibility or both and how can I correct it. By the way, if you want to do a back walkover try getting into a back bridge on your back with your feet on higher elevation, like on the base of a hill, a couch or the bottom of a slide. Then kick off with your lead off foot and shove your head out as far as it can. A drill to help you recognize the correct way to shove out your head is too stand 1 or 2 feet from a wall put both hands on it then try to get your head/body as far down as possible without moving your hands. Hope this helped you, now please help me!
i can do back bend to a bridge. but i think i still have like a loooooooooong way to do bhspring. coz' once u can do back bend to bridge, u have to be able to bring your legs over your head (which is the hard part) then there's the fear factor too...
I've been trying to do a back limber not a backhandspring and I fing half of it quite dfficult. First of all, I can get into a bridge and all but I just can't flip my legs over. I've been looking all over the internet and none of them describe about the flipping legs over bit. I hope that anyone who is a proffesional at it to help me because it's just that last bit and then I've nailed it. I used to do gymnastics but because I haven't the time so I quite but I always had ambition to be a real, perfect gymnast. Please Someone Help Me!
when i do a backhandspring i tend to flip crooked bcuz maybe of da misplacement of my arms. what should i do so i can do a backhandspring straight.any tipz?
i need help. my handsprings are landing me crooked. i go fine but when i land its to the side. also when i do a roundoff to get momentum i completely screw up. also does anyone have any tips to make it smooth. thanks.
HI! I am working on my round off back handspring. And I basically already have my standing back handspring, which people say is harder to learn then round off back handsprings. But everytime I go to do a round off I get afraid that I might kick my spotter and I do a horrible round off. And end up just doing a standing back handspring instead of a round off bh. I know its confusing but if anyone has any advice on how not to be afraid to kick my spotter (lol) tell me please!!!!!
I can pretty much do a back handspring, but all of the time. My arms are too bent, and I fall right on my head. Rarely can I see the ground in the air. and I usually always go more to the side. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, and how to prevent it. Thanx.
My name is Megan and I'm early 11. I took gymnastics but quit when we were doing back handsprings. A back handspring has always been my dream and I dont mean to be a burden but can you email me on how? If you can, thanx...... Megan Brooks
hope. fear is not an issue. i cant do a backhandspring yet but i do crazy stuff (backflips of monkey bars and other things.) the way to get over your fear is to flip first onto grass of pillows(duh.) what i did was i fell on my back, basically just jump and land on your back and stomach before you do a trick to prove to yourself that it doesnt hurt. then you wont have a problem. if it does hurt you need to find softer ground. good luck.
by the way. i need help not landing screwy. thanks.
well u just got to read all the tips up here cos this sites full of them, try to understand the movements, and watch videos of people doing them, which this site has links to. this will give u a better understanding. u firstly need to understand the movements and the body parts which are involved in those movements. for example. a back handspring consists of a backwards movement where u have to jump backwards (there is fear factor their for most people) so u would need flexible and strong shoulders and back for this movement, as from a standing position u do need to arch ur back a little. so to practice you would need to do back bridges/bends regularly to get flexy and strong. thats just a brief example, even though their are more smaller things u need to look at. but at the end of the day it all relies on YOU and only you because its your body and its up to you to train it, get it into shape. But alot of these moves can be done by most if not evreyone, its just the fear of doing them which is why u have to go for it. but remember its all about understandinf first.
a back-handspring is a big fear move. One way to overcome the fear is to get so close to the back handspring and then just going all out. What I mean is learn a back walkover. Practice backbridges, walking up and down walls and getting your chest high up and knees straight to increase both strength and flexibility. Then go on a hill or at least get your legs on a surface higher then your feet push up into a back bend and try to kick over, your first ones will simply be balance issues of thrusting your head out and using shoulder flexibility. Then work on falling from a stand into the back bend, accomplish this with the use of a wall and someone holding your back or just keeping a hand there to catch you if you fall. Then do back walkovers a lot. Do them so you can do six or so in a row, it's not easy but if you work hard enough eventually they become more natural and easy. Then work on going into them faster and kicking up sooner, you will accomplish your first back handspring this way, though your hands will be very close to the ground before you hop off your legs. If you can do this just try doing that a couple times a little sooner. Then try doing a series of backwalkovers as long as you can heading into each one stronger, faster, quicker. You will notice how close these are to actually jumping from a stand. Then do one of these fast in between handspring walkovers followed by a fast back walkover and then just jump for it. The movement and progression will be natural, just understand that this isn't how a back handspring should be done everytime, these look good but they are hard on your arms. I just did my first complete back handspring today with this method. The backwalkovers really help in succession before going into it because it gets you into a rhythem which is almost cheating into the back handspring because your body is just speeding up the movement. This whole process can be done without a spotter, it just takes a while. The payoff though is worth it.
without a spotter. A spotter could help and speed up the process, but you don't need one. I will say however that having a spotter might make the strength aspects of this easier. This way helps you do back handsprings safely, and as you do more hopefully they will become longer and cover more distance. If they don't, or at least if you do the 2 back walkovers for it every time to gain momentum it wreaks havoc on your arms. I'm not exactly strong but I'm not weak either but this stuff kills your triceps and forearms after a while. The reason is it's a lot more up and down because your doing them from back walkovers, so the back handspring will be more like a back walkover.
I AM TRYING OUT FOR THE TALENT NIGHT AND MY FRIEND WHAT ME TO DO IT WITH HER I SAID OK AND SHE WANTS TO DO A GYMNASTICS ROTION AND I DON'T NO HOW TO DO A backHAND SPRING PLEASE HELP ME
I really need hepl i wanna learn so bad, but dont wanna get hurt. Any tips. advise, stretches that will get me on my way please tell me. Thanks so much.
tricks tutorials.com is a pretty cool site but not what I'm looking for. It would be very very very very very very hard for me to learn those tricks. All I know how to do is a cartwheel a roundoff a diveroll and a handstand forward roll. I can't do a backwalkover. I would really like to know whats wrong with my backhandspring when I'm being spotted. But I guess in order for you to tell me that you'd have to see it. So unless there are any tips in order to get a backhandspring I guess you can't really help me.
its very simple although it sounds hard. the only skill you need besides arm strength is courage. you make like your about to sit on a chair. then you bring your arms down to a little behind you while your in the chair position. just swing your arms up and jump. an automatic reaction will be your hands touching the floor. then push off. dont worry if you land crooked or anything. sheer repetition will perfect it. if your making mistakes just practice a lot more.
Hi i have the stantce and i know what to do im just afraid to jump bakwards i've tried the pool thing i've had a spotter i'm just afraid to jump onto my hands Some1 Plz Plz help ~**Kristen~**
I can't get over the fear of doing a back handspring alone. Plus I haveing trouble pulling my legs over fast enough. I need this skill to have any chance of cheerleing in college. HELP!!
How do I do a Fronthandspring?? I can do one on the trampoline but it is harder on the Ground and i feel like i am going 2 fall and Break my neck..........plezzzzzz tell me how !!!
for everyone whos afraid. the best way to get over it is to first try flipping back into a couch.(thats how i learnt when i was 10. im 15 now.) or find a grassy field and seriously, fall backward, like jump onto the grass on your back. then you know it wont hurt and youll lose your fear. good luck.
hi, i can do round off, cartwheel, one handed cartwheel, aerial cartwheel, but i still havn't worked up the nerve to do a back flip, how the heck do i get the confidence to do a backflip, i know i can do one, its just that im afraid im gonna fall on my head and get paralized its like a 50/50 thing 50% cance i'll land on my head and die 50% chance ill do a back flip
Shoot crash you're harsh!!!!! There are a lot of precautionists out ther though. So try a backhandspring with a spot and try to learn a backwalkover. And don't be so scared to do one. Try doing it on a softer surface though but not without have ever done it before.
Hey..I really need help on how to do a backhandspring..i have tryouts in 1 week for jr high cheerleading and almost everyone trying out can do a backhandspring but me!! Can u plz email me some tips and stuff...thanx..i really need it!!!
Yes you should Learn a backwalkover before doing a backhandspring. tHere are however, a lot of people who can do backhandsprings without being able to do backwalkovers, but I would highly recomend learning one before attempting a backhandspring without a spot. Hope this helped.
Thank you all for helping me i can now officially do a back handspring woo hoo, i just took the 50/50 chance and did one, now i can do multiple ones and im very very happy, so thanks!
Hi Im just wanted to ask someone about back handsprings everytime I want to do it my body rotates to the left side I can come over but it's not so cool cause my body rotates and I don't go over straight PLEASE help me my hotmail is Knoxville46@hotmail.com
2 get over the fear of a back handspring try doing it on a trampoline with spot. going into it you should start with your hands at yor side. squat and lean slightly backwards a if you r going 2 fall. then jump hard and straight arch slightly while keeping your arms locked by your head. when your body is is over your hands snap down. that's it.
OKAY I DONT BLOODY CARE ANYMORE IM JUST GONNA TRY A BACKHANDSPRING TODAY, AFTER I SHIT OUT THE FEAR, THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IS I LAND ON MY HEAD, BUT IT WONT HURT ON A CRASH MAT SO HERE I GO
hi, i need help on learning how to do a back handspring and back bend. I can do my back handspring on a trampoline but i only have one problem, i bend my arms. Is there something I can do to help myself?
I'm 27-years-old and I feel that I am in pretty good physical condition. I have done everything from tai chi, kung-fu, ninjitsu, running, and swimming. I can still do a cartwheel pretty good, but the only thing is I have only mastered it from my left-side and i am right handed. Also, am I too old to learn the backhandsprings, fronthandsprings, and flips.
YOUR NEVER TO OLD TO START LEARNING, WELL OKAY MAYBE THATS AN EXAGERATION, BUT TRUELLY IVE SEEN A 70 YR OLD DO ONE. IT WAS A BIT DODGY BUT HE DID IT. 27 IS NOT TOO OLD, IM 22 AND IVE JUST STARTED, I DID MY VERY FIRST BACK HANDSPRING LAST TUESDAY, THE FIRST WAS THE BEST I HAD THE TECHNIQUE RIGHT THOUGH AFTRER THAT I STARTED TO GET A LITTLE TO ONE SIDE, THOUGH FOR THE FIRST TIME IT WASNT BAD.
I finally got my backhandspring on the trampoline. The only problem is I can only do it without landing on my head 50% of the time. And I'm still scared even though I've done it by myself about 10 times. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!! THANK YOU
I can do a backhandpring easily on my trampoline but i cant get it on land i guess i'm just 2 scared! Could you e-mail me tecniques and info on how to do one? Thanks!
Now I can hardly do a backhandspring correctly. It's like doing one before I am ready messed it up. When I don't do one correctly it's like my body memorizes that pattern and that's the way it does it until someone rearanges it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I teach tumbling every day of the week and i can answer many questions. Also i am looking for some new equiptment, my mats are getting kinda beat up!! E-mail me if you have any information or questions!
The back handspring is a skill that combines backward tumbling and flight. It is the combination of those two basic skills that makes the back handspring very challenging for many adult gymnasts.
But since it is a component of many advanced tumbling skills, it is important to master. Although the skill learning involved in the back handspring can be made easier with progressive drills and spotting, the most difficult task for many adult gymnasts is just "letting themselves go." Also, before attempting the back handspring a good warm-up is a must. Because the it is especially taxing on the wrists, shoulders, back, thigh and hamstrings a warm-up that stretches those parts of the body is important. The following drills and progressions will make learning the actual back handspring skill easier:
1. A back limber. To do a back limber, stand with your feet together and hands over your head. Tilt you head to back and bend your back while reaching for the floor behind you. Most likely, you will have to bend your knees in order to reach the floor but try to avoid bending the knees as much as possible. When your hands touch the floor, you will be in a bridge position. Kick your legs over your torso and arms, so your feet touch the ground behind you, lift your arms, and stand. The back limber you have just completed is a very slow back handspring without the flight.
If you are unable to do the back limber because you do not have enough flexibility in your back, try using a 4-foot octagon foam-filled barrel. To use the barrel, stand in front of , but face away from it. Bend your back so your shoulders touch the barrel and use it to cause your back to arch until your hands touch the floor. With your hands on the floor the barrel will support your back as you kick your feet over your hands and assume a standing position.
2. Fast back limber. Stand at the top of an incline mat, with the lower part of the incline behind you. Bend your back and reach for the mat as you did in the first exercise. When your hands touch the mat, kick your feet over your head and stand up. Doing the skill downhill on the incline makes it much easier.
When you are comfortable with the back limber on the incline, try to speed up reaching back and kicking your feet over your head. As your hands are about to touch the mat kick your feet into the air and over your head forcefully. Finally, when your feet leave the mat before your hands touch the mat you have done a back handspring.
3. Grooming the back handstand. Now lets work on adding even more force and speed to the skill. Stack two eight-inch skill cushions and stand on the floor about two feet in front of them with your back toward them. Bend your knees while keeping you head and torso forward, almost as is if you are trying to sit in a chair without looking down at it. Bring your arms to your sides. When you reach the squat position jump back quickly, straightening your legs and raising your hands above your head. You should finish lying on the stacked cushions with you feet off the ground. That is the position you will want to be in while doing a back handspring. For this drill to work, when you are squatting, you should feel almost as if you are about to fall backward right before you jump backward. It is that backward momentum that will make a powerful and extended back handspring.
4. Coming out of the back bend fast. Now that we have drilled the first half of the skill lets do a drill for coming out of the back bend quickly. For this drill you will need a folded one-inch thick panel mat. Stand on the floor facing the panel mat. Kick-up as if you are going to do a handstand on the panel mat without going into a full vertical position. Forcefully drive your heals back toward the ground but, just before your feet touch the ground forcefully lift your hands from the panel mat and try to stand on the ground in a semi-squatted position. The purpose of this drill is to cause you to get used to quickly going from the almost-handstand position to the squatted standing position because in the back handspring, forcefully driving the heals down to the sitting position from the handstand position will cause your back handsprings to be more powerful.
Now we are ready to try the back handspring again. It can be practiced on a skill cushion, on the incline mat, on the trampoline or into the pit. The easiest surfaces to learn it on are the trampoline or the incline mat. Either will give you some added momentum. On the trampoline you will want to be in front of the center and facing away from it, with your feet almost touching the edge of the trampoline. On the incline mat you will want to be at the top of the hill, as in the previous exercise. Start with your hands overhead. Bring your hands down and at the same time squat as if sitting in a chair. Forcefully raise your hands above your head keeping the elbows straight at the same time as you jump backward into an arch. You should shoot backward. As your hands touch the mat, snap your feet toward the ground and stand. Congratulations, you have just done your first back handspring.
When working into the pit it is important that you don't allow the difference between the level of the floor and level of the pit to be too great. If the floor is a lot higher then the pit, that difference in height will cause your back to bend too much and will place stress on the vertebrae.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. When you have mastered the skill so that your arms don't bend when contacting the vertical surface and your knees stay together as they go overhead, on the incline, trampoline or into the pit, you are ready to try it on a four-inch skill cushion. When you acquire good form on that skill cushion, try it on the bare floor.
When you have achieved all of the above, you have mastered one of the most fundamental and valuable skills in gymnastics. Now, when you have a good spotter you can count on, you can connect the back handspring you just learned to a round-off and begin doing round-off back handsprings in series. Good luck. Enjoy the happy times.
There's a lot of info on "how" to do a back handspring, but there's nothing on how "often" to do it! Sure you can say you just go into a back limber, but for how long do you hold for? Do you do sets? Do you do it everyday? Someone plz clarify this for me! Thx =)
When I try to do a backhandspring on the ground I get scared when I am just about to jump backwards. How do I overcome this fear because I do not have a trampoline or any soft inflatable things to help me.
OKAY when you practice back limbers ofcourse you have to do sets/reps as thats the only way you improve, their isnt really a limit as the more you do them the better youll get though youll stop yourself when your too tired and you feel you aint gettin it right n e more, then u just rest untill u can try again.
BACKWARDS FEAR can be over come by practicing the back walkover/limber. All you have to do is practice going down backwards with your hands and kickin your legs over.
HOW: stand a few feet away from the wall, enough so you can reach back and place your hands on the wall after which you start to walk your hanmd down untill you are into a bridge. keep practicing this untill u can go back without the wall. AFTER that you need to practice kickin ur legs over. IF YOU CANT do it on flat ground, then try having your feet on a higher surface such as a sofa or chair and practice kicking of that from a bridge. NOTE, your hands will be on the ground whilst your feet on the chair/sofa etc. when you can do it off from the chair try something close to the ground N E THING which you can kick off. Im sure youve got things lying about the house or barn, which ever you live in.
NOTE; DO NOT expect to learn the back walkover in a day or two as your back and shoulders will need to get used to these movements if you havent done them before so at first you may find it difficult to get into the bridge, BUT practice makes perfect, so dont try and accomplish everything in one day.
SOOOO. Once you got the back walkover down, all you have to do then iiiiiiis practice it even more but this time put speed into it, so your are going over backwards quite fast and then kicking over. Once you can do this continuously about five times in a row, then you take the next big step as told in the above message.
This is to do the back wealkover as normal, but just before your hands touch the ground you jump off your feet. The idea herer is not to have your hands and feet on the floor at the same time. You can go over as usual just like in the backwalkover, and when you see the floor just before your hands touch you kick off land on your hands and kick over.
ONCE you are able to do this, you have accomplished your very first though little rusty back hand spring.
BUT its not over yet, What you need to do now is practice the same thing but getting more space into the distance between your hands and the ground before you kick off, and walaa before you know it youll be doing your BHS ,
Then you can polish it off with the stupid stands and stuff. but these are the steps i took and i did it.
and remember
YOU LEARN TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU WALK YOU LEARN TO WALK BEFORE YOU RUN
Yeah thats fine but the main thing you have to remember is to try to bring your hands closer to your feet. Your goal here is to get your hands and feet as close as possible, whilst keeping your arms straight and as vertical as possible, as well as your legs which should also be kept as straight as possible. DO NOT make the bend in the centre of your spine as that can cause permanant injury,, it should be more near to the lower back above your bottom.
The closer your hands are to your feet the easier it would be to kick over.
LIL SPLITS, i used to do exactly what you are doing. It is a good way to get your back and shoulders flexible. Once you are able to do that, move on to kickin over. AND PROGRESS FROM THEIR.
hey i have the same problem with julie, i need help with doing back handsprings. when i try to bend backwards, i am afraid of landing on my head. could u send me some info on how to do back handsprings at my email address.
One way of getting over backwards fear is to get an inflatable bed put it on the ground and try to flip backwards. It won't hurt if you fall on your head because the bed will absorb the fall. I used to be afraid of going but when I got the inflatable bed it help me get over my fear.
there are some guides which are excellent. CRASH that guide was great. But all of u missed a very important factor here. let' say im going for the BHS....it is very important that i dont go sideways (which is very very likely to happen). so to do good and not to go sideways....what u have to do is something pyschological and it helps. KEEP IT IN UR MIND THAT U R TRYING TO CATCH THE BACK OF UR FEET WITH UR HANDS. in that way the BHS will be performed correctly and it will look good. hope u understood what i said here. peace and good luck :)
I really need help on my back walkover because i have my backhandspring but i cant get my back walkover no matter how hard i kick i cant get over! I really need as many tips as i can get so i can get my backwalkover otherwise i cant do competition for acro at my dance!!! please email me at danceangel6116@yahoo.com with as many tips as you can i really need help!
On back walkovers work the bridge position a bit. Also good shoulder flexibility is good, so just stand 2-3 feet away from a wall, put your hands on it, hold them there and try and get your head and chest as close as possible to the ground. NOw, get into a bridge (try on an area where your feet are elevated ie: hill, couch, flat object higher on the floor. Make sure it is anchored so when you kick off it, it will not fall or something which would throw off your balance). When you kick, try both feet for a lead off foot and use that one to fo up and push off hard with your other foot. Your first attempts will basically be fighting with the balance to go over. The stretch I mentioned above will feel very similar to what it feels like to get over. Keep on working at the kickovers on higher elevated surfaces, work on falling into a bridge with a friend holding your back the first times and eventually working your way to just doing the bridge kickout on flat ground. Then just combine the fall and the kick. Your first 'real' back walkovers should be done slowly, fall into the bridge first THEN walkover, later you can start raising your foot before you land in the bridge and you can work on doing them quicker and doing multiple walkovers at a time. This move could take a while, just make sure to improve back and shoulder flexibility. For the strength part you need to have strong triceps (dont get too scared, chances are even if your weak your arms will hold you). You can make the walkovers easier though by doing chair push ups. To do these you will face AWAY from a chair, put your hands on the chair's seat, slide your legs out and lower yourself down like you would sit on the ground. Then before you sit down you push yourself back up. Your triceps (the muscle behind your biceps) should be working relatively hard here.
hey, how many times would you do that "kickover" exercise? I'm looking for numbers, 5, 10, 100 times? =) just wondering. Also, would you do it every day?
hey im a cheerleader 4 the lions and i was just wondering how do u do a back flip if anybody have steps 2 give me please e-mail me at kiwigirlyouno@yahoo.com
I don't think numbers really matter, the thing that matters is would be how hard is it for you to kickover? If your still having trouble keep on working it on higher elevations, then try and find something lower. Couches work great for beginners just to get a general feel. I was doing it on a slide (my feet on the bottom my hands on the ground, and remember you want to push up into a bridge in the beginning not try to fall into one, especially on any raised surface besides a hill). Walls work too, face the wall, liedown, push up into a bridge and walk up the wall with your feet and push off. When your able to do the kickover on slightly raised surfaces well, you'll know what well is. It means getting over with very, or probably no 'hang' at the top. When first doing the full thing on the ground try not kicking right away when landing. You'll find this will give you time to recover from the fall into the bridge and you'll be able to concentrate more on the kickover. Now if your playing balance games at the top when on flat ground and slowly getting over that is OK, but obviously don't strive for it. As you get better that will go away and lifting your foot and kicking off right when you hit the ground with your hands really helps on momentum, just be sure you're pretty good on landing the bridge and kicking over. , not landing in the bridge, kicking and falling to the side. If you are falliing to your side, kicking earlier could get dangerous.
I have a question. I can do back walkovers pretty well, my back doesn't bend as much as it should but I can do them fine. My only problem is two things. One, my left hand sometimes hurts after doing a couple. Not the whole hand, just one part. Picture your left palm, and then look in the lower right portion. I have a bone there that starts to hurt after I do a couple. Also my chest got hurt once, and it hurt for a couple days after. Finally my right pec muscle, right around the collar bone would hurt. Now, don't get scared, these aren't bad and I do the walkovers fine and I've only had my chest hurt once and that was when I was bareling into multiple ones down rough gravel. My collar bone pain has disappeared now, so it might have been a stretching problem or I tore it, but I was just wondering if this was a common injury. Finally, my hand doesn't bother me anymore so maybe it was just my hand getting used to falling onto the ground, but it did hurt for a long time when I would do them. Does anybody know if these are common., why they happen and ways to prevent them? Thanks, I could really use your help, I don't want to hurt my chest ever again and the other too are just annoying!
You got to warm up before doin da bridges, so your muscles can stretch easier when dey is warm. Do some pull ups or runnin and den stretch your back and shoulders before you try to do da back walksovers
hi i want to try out for cheerleading but my back handsprings are no good, i can do them and all its just that when i land my arms are bent can u give me advice, or any steps that i can learn just email me at saynotosatan07@yahoo.com
"I don't think numbers really matter" I appreciate your input, but there has to be a number that you normally do every time you are working out. Just give me a guess at how many you normally do then! =) BTW, I'm doing that wall kickover thingie for a total of 6 repetitions everyday, do you think that is to little? That's why I want to know how many everyone else does! I want to learn a back handspring!!! =D
hey everyone! I need some serious help! About 5 months ago, I could do a back handspring and a roundoff back handsping-no spot-without being scared at all. One day at practice though I was trying to keep my feet together by trying to keep a piece of paper in between my legs. I would start to do one, but then I'd freak out and not jump and just sit...don't ask... So the next time I go to practice, somehow I have a fear to jump back!! I've tried everything to get the handspring back and NOTHING has worked. My spot basically has to throw me over even to get me to go. Some days I can do it with a spot...and some days I can't even push myself to jump. I really need to get it back >I know I can physically do it(because I used to have it), but I can't get over my phobia of jumping backwards onto my hands!< (I'm even scared to do it in a pool) I'd greatly appreciate any help if you can give it. Thanks a bunch!!
Well, I hate to say it, but I still am right. Numbers don't really matter. This exercise can be repeated as many times as you like. Most of the drills I gave are good to do about 5 or 10 times at one time, preferably after you've gone into a bridge position 3 times holding it for about 10 seconds and resting in between for 10-20 seconds. Also, a new drill that I feel is a much more 'number' drill is this: face away from a wall. You should stand somewhere around 3 feet away. Arch your back and walk down the wall with your hands, this can be a bit wierd and scary the first couple of times. Maybe you won't even make it halfway down, that is OK. Just go up and down about 5-10 times. Don't overdo it right away, your back flexibility doesn't need to be maxed out, but this starts to help in falling down into a bridge plus you can do it by yourself. It is OK to bend your knees, but try to bend them as little as possible. At most I would only recommend doing this between 20 or 30 times in any given hour. It is probably hard on your back and it will definitely be hard on your hands, it takes a lot of strength to do this. After maybe a week of walking down where the feeling is somewhat natural and doable you could start trying to fall back a bit. Don't try to fall all the way down the wall on your first try, use little steps to progress. This will probably be a bit scary. I would advise using a partner and just having them hold your back while you do this on the ground (without a wall) instead. As for the numbers, I only really would reccomend using numbers for the exercises. Although any kickover you do is kind of an exercise, it is much more of a trick, and anyone who has learned how to do a trick knows practice makes perfect. Just do the kickovers and try to maintain good form (straight legs, straight arms, bending IN THE LOWER BACK). Stretch your shoulders against a wall 1-3 times a day for 30 seconds and whatever you do don't over stress your lower back, when you first start out try increasing your flexibility a lot, but do it reasonable. The back walkover, when perfected, is supposed to demonstrate flexibility and control. Now, you don't need to learn how to do a perfect straight legged bridge with a 180* split in it, but you want to feel comftorable when doing these and not be in pain (usually in your lower back) afterwards. Oh yeah, handstands are another perfect 'number drill' for back walkovers. Do them against a wall or without but focus on holding them for 15 seconds and then progress to 20, 30, 45 and and eventually 60+. They are absolutely essential to doing back handsprings and back walkovers. Even better are handstand push ups. They are EXTREMELY difficult, the most I do is like 15-20, and usually I just do about 10. If you want to be able to do a back handspring you have NO idea how much pressure you feel when you come down on your hands until you do it. I've heard that doing 12 handstand pushups 2 to 3 times a day is a good number to do. If you can do that for a week I guarentee you you can easily do a back handspring, just make sure you can do a backwalkover without bent arms first.
Thank you! =) Your advice is much appreciated and I will add that to my daily routine, and thank you for the "numbers", sorry for the hassle, but I like to know every little detail... =P
Yes!!! I finally did a back handspring again!!! I got mine in March but it was only for 1 day, which really sucked. I only did about 4. I must say, although the back walkover is a cool and fun move I think it is only good for a 'safe' trick to learn. Then again, the way I did my back handspring was I just did a back walkover, relatively fast, and then I would just do another one in the same spot. I would not do them continuously, but just one at a time, with the thought of trying to attempt a back handspring. I freaked myself out when I realized I really was going to do one at first so I stopped, I could tell I was going to jump and everything. So I stopped, went inside, went back out after telling myself I would never have really attempted one, did 5 more walkovers and then I just did a handspring. It was great!!! It is quite a bit different from a walkover , which I have down pretty well, because you leap into it right away. Right now I need to work on my form, and definitely my strength, it isn't easy to do one, it is hard on your wrists! But thats OK, they are easier then I ever thougt they could be!! The first time I did it I would do walkovers to build up the momentum, but the walkovers I did were 'jumped' onto my hand at the last second. That was rough, it killed my triceps and it used way too much energy! Maybe you could just try what I did on a hill, who knows, maybe you'll get the courage I got too! One thing though, could I ask for any more tips to help perfect your handspring when you finally get it? Thanx!
Take it from me, if you want to do really well formed back handsprings you can learn the basics at home first. For a back handspring there are two, safe, relatively easy basics. Handstands and back walkovers. You should be able to hold 30 second handstands, at least on a wall before attempting handsprings, and for a good consistent back walkover 30 seconds isn't too bad either. I can hold one for 30 seconds without a wall, but that isn't all the time. I only hold them best when I'm on a sidewalk, it's flat and hard, which is the easiest surface to do them on. Make sure they have good technique, straight body, pointed toes. For back walkovers, just look above. Those seem to me to come from someone who knows what he or she is talking about. To do multiple b-springs doing back walkovers in a row is really helpful. It helps you learn what it feels like to keep on going. To me, multiple handsprings is like a rythem, if you just keep your legs together and keep on going, they become quite easy. Also, if you can, work on techinically good handsprings on a trampoline. Work on going backwards, legs straight and coming out with the ability to continue. If possible, do 2 back handsprings on a trampoline, sure you have to undercut them, but it gives you a feel for doing multiples as well. With these skills in hand, adding more spring to your springs will be a lot easier.
Easy, just work bridges on the wall and on the floor, and develop strength by doing a bridge with feet on the couch, hands on the floor and try push ups. Handstand push ups would be better, but about 95 times harder to do. Try doing 15-20 reps a day of couch bridge push ups and in a week it should already get easier
I was wondering if anyone at all can give me some tips on how to do a back handspring well without putting to much stress on your wrists. I can do them, I can even do 5 in a row, but I hurt my wrists a lot. I dont undercut them too much, but could someone give me an idea of how far one should be so Im sure I am not undercutting? Plus, tips on how to do a roundoff back handspring would be cool too, cause i cant do those either! PS: I have a rebound on my bhsprings, but i was wondering how to make it better. If anyone can answer these I would really appreciate it!!
to get more rebound on your backhandspring push off more with your legs in th ebeginning to get more power or if yours doing it with a roundoff practice doing oyur roundoff wiht a lot of power
1 makesure you are strong enought to hold up your body and have enough power by doing pushups lunges situps and crunches.
2 practice getting the feel of jumping back by bending your knees and squating while swing your arms forwards then junp up and swing them back like your about to do a backhandspring just so you have the right feel.
3 have a good roundoff so you have that feel of pushing off the ground. if you cant do a roundoff practice your cartwheels then do running cartwheels then just put your legs together in the middle of the cartwheel and push off with your hand.
4 to increase flexibility stretch a lot but just ease while stretching so you dont pull a muscle. it is also very important to warmup before you stretch so your muscles are warmed up and you dont tear or pull a muscle or somehting. practice backbends and walking in the backbend position.
5 for a backwalkover do your backbend with one foot pointing forward but still on the ground. do your back bend and as soon as yours hands touch the ground kickover with your pointing foot leg.
6 practice going into a handstand and springing out of it. it will help you with springing out with your arms.
i promise these tips will help at least a little becuz thats what i did for awhile and after i starting doing these things my backhandspring became very good! makesure to keep in shape!
For the back bend, do you keep your feet close to each other or can they be shoulder width apart? I want to now this so I can learn a back walkover and eventually a back hand spring
put your feet together never spread them apart if you have to wear tennis shoes and tie your shoe strings together then stand up with your hands by your sides when your ready to go DON'T JUMP if you jump you'll do a messed up whip always put your hands out dont bend your arms or your legs you'll hurt yourself if you bend your arms and if you bend your legs you'll hit yourself in the face. STEP#1-Feet together hands in ready position. STEP#2- when you go back arch your back just a little throw your hands back but not to hard.{ its almost like doing a backwards handstand and flipping over}STEP#3-put your hands out immediatly and kick both feet over at the same time. ¿~good luck be careful~¿
Hey anybody who wants to know how to do a backhandspring: don't worry! you will get it soon. I was in gymnastics for about 5 years and it took me 3 years to know how to do a backhandspring. u will definatly get it down! good luck to u all!
Ack! It takes that long? 3 years! I'll be like 24 by then! I wonder if I'm getting too old for this? Gymnasts usually start when they are kids... Anybody wanna give me some tips on the back handspring, or other cool gymnast stuff email me at lil_splits@yahoo.com
Oh no, this move doesn't need to take 3 years!!! It took me 2, and that's only because i didnt really try that hard!! #1 thing that will help this process take almost no time is a gymnastics center, plus a competent coach/ spotter or something. Other then that, mats of some type help, trampolines help, and so does strength. Backwalkovers, IMO are more helpful to develop multiple back handsprings quicker. I mastered multiple walkovers b4 i could do a handspring, and within 5 handsprings on my own I attempted and succeeded in a 2nd back handspring!! Back handsprings are only hard because they are scary the first few times, other then that handstands are all you really need to get down pat. I would suggest learning the handstand, the back walkover and finding a competent center for you to learn the handspring version.
Ooops I'm so sorry about that everyone. Anyway I do need help. First of all, I don't have a spotter so shall I buy a crash mat. And how much do they cost
would doing back walkovers help in getting the arch of the back right? Im not scared of going over backwards, but i cant get my back to arch far enough. i need help.
I have been coaching floor tumbling for 7 years. NEVER ATTEMPT A BACKHANDSPRING UNLESS YOU HAVE A KNOWLEDGEABLE AND QUALIFIED INSTRUCTOR! You can seriously injure yourself by attempting to perform this skill without proper instruction. It takes more than a good bridge (backbend) to do a backhandspring. You need to have strong upper body strength or you may end up hitting your head. Find a gym in your area.
if you are freaked out about them just practice doing bridges and the start going into bridges from standing up and gradualy get faster at going into a bridge from standing up and the try jumping into it. and then you will have a back hand spring. email me if you want to know more.
I'm pretty ok with my handstand but i don't really stay up there for more than 5-10 seconds. I really need to know how to push off. So can someone please give me detailed insturctions as to what things I can to do.
Hi y'all, This message might not have anything to do with the back hanspring but this section is practically the most popular and so I want advice from every1. Okay let's cut to the chase here and move to my big question. Okay, when you're fighting, what is the best way to block yourself from all those punches and kicks that your opponent's throwing at you? For example, how would you escape from an axe kick, fast back walkover kick, jump split kick and those regular normal strong punches and kicks? Does any1 know any websites or tips that could help my with my question?
All right, I can do a backflip, wallflip, and single backhandspring. But what I need to know is how to do multiple back handsprings? I can do the single back handspring but I can't do like 3 of them in a row really fast. I can get them together but they're really clumsy. So how do you do them really fast like gymnasts do? Any help appreciated.
hey i really need help, i can almost do back walkovers, i can fall into a backbend, fronthandspring, and roundoffs, but i cant do backhs, ive tried on trampolines but im so used to doing back flips that i jump/flip under myself instead if jumping back and out, please email me or post on here, any ways to improve, thanx alot
OK, I can do these like REALLY easy at a gymnastic center-though I am only there like once in a GREAT while. But when I do these on normal ground they are much tougher, not only because I have less power and stuff but because I have a harder time with my wrists!!! Anybody have any ideas?
okey well i need help with my back hand spring!!! i am trying out 4 the cheerleading team...... and i am scared to jump backwards becuz i am afriad that i will land on my head... so if u could please email me and tell me waht u do when u do back hand springs!

Well if you're afraid of going backwards you could try what I did to get over the fear of flipping backwards. Just wear a belt and what you do is have two of your friends grab onto your belt from the sides. Then, count to three, and on three, let them hold you up in the air while you flip over. Then each time tell your friends to let up a bit and eventually it gets the point where you're going backwards yourself and you just need to make that connection with yourself. Hope that helps a bit.
hey, i was wondering if anybody here could send me an email with tips for a front and back handspring. i can do a back bend already, but i cannot do anything else really.email me!!!
Alright I am not in gymnastics or I am not a gymnast, but I still mess around with flips and stuff. Over the summer I learned how to land front flips straight up on any kind of surface and off drops. I can do back flips on one matrace and almost on grass I can do other stuff including Front handsprings can not land them straight up all the time. I cannot seem to get back handsprings. I usually practice on a matrace I jump back arch my back land on handstand kick my legs over but usually land in a squat postition help.
If your able to get to your hands on the handspring you should be able to land standing up. I guess Ill have to ask when you do one are youafraid of stubbing your toe? My friend was and although it seems sad that stopped him for a while until he just did one correctly and got it right. Also when you do a handspring is it easy to get to your hands or is it like a just made it type of thing. Your goal should be to jump backwards a bit and then push off your hands a bit on the landing. Some people recommend snapping down but I only find that more helpful ater a roundoff when you have some speed going into it. Also try and keep your legs straight and together-that could be hurting it too. If you can make it to your hands it should be pretty easy to get to your feet. Just visualize it and try and figure out whats wrong with your technique and then go from there. Good luck!
I have been able to do backhadsprings for about 6 years and i can not do back walkovers. My exscuse is i am a guy.haha You just need some flexability in yout back. You do not have to be a rubberband.
i'm thinking of trying out for the cheering team and i'm 17. i can do cartwheels and backbends but that's it. my split is about 3 inches off the floor and i really want to learn how to do walkovers and back handsprings. am i too old to learn? do you have tips on how i can learn to do the split, walkovers and back handsprings in the shortest possible time?? it's dusk@zahadum.com. thanks much!
I have my backhandspring, but here's my deal and I need help: My coach will spot me on the floor 2 or 3 times and then I can do my bhs bymyself, but after like, 2 bhs, I get scared to do it again. Any one who has their bhs knows what I'm talking about when I say you have to have that rush going thru your body for you to be able to do it. Know what I mean? Well, I lose that rush after a few minutes, and then I feel like it's impossible for me to be able to gain it again without a spot again. You'd think that I'd be ready to do it on my own every time now since I have done it on the floor by myself a few times, but I still don't have that full confidence for it on the floor.. I get spotted on my roundoffbackhandspring during practice, and I have a really good roundoff and my teamamates encouraged me to volunteer to do a robhs in our routine. I'm not the only one who doesn't have it bymyself yet, but the thing is I think I can do it, so I really need help!! Do you think I could have it by mid October? My standing bhs on the floor as well as my robhs? Please let me know how to overcome this, I appreaciate it so much!!--->E-mail me your responses at DivaGirl5000@msn.com . thanks!!
Back handsprings are only as hard as we are unconfident to do them-generally being how scared we are. Sometimes getting over it is just taking the 'risk' by yourself when you at least know you can do it (your scared but you know you've done it before and whatnot). Unfortunately that takes a lot of confidence to do, and it can be dangerous if you dont know what your doing. The main trick here is just do these all the time and on as many surfaces as possible. You can even try doing them different sometimes but make sure that you are mainly practicing them one way or else you could just get overwhelmed!! The point is, is to make yourself comftorable with it so you know you can perform it anytime because the thing is YOU REALLY CAN. Whenever Im scared and think (wha if i fall on my head this time?) I just forcefully ignore that and JUST DO IT-but do it with everything I have. Wheather it looked good or not it got done and doing them after that is much easier. So, just build up your confidence and when you need to do them in front of a crowd just practice them a few times beforehand. As you get better at them and more used to them the easier they will become for you!!
PLEASE can somebody tell me some ways to aid my aching wrists??? ANYTHING!!! I can do back handsprings but i dont know if my technique is right, but its at least good enough for 10 in a row :)!!! However my wrists ALWAYS hurt after, even if its one, every time. can anyone help me?? PS this doesnt count matted surfaces-just stuff like hard floors and grass
Hey all! I learned my back handpsring when I was four and have been doing it for a long time as a competitive gymnast...I have a tip for those who like to aquire one. First of all, YOU NEED A QUALIFIED SPOT! Go to a gymnastics center, your coach...just do not attempt this yourself, even if you are a seasoned pro. A girl from my gym was an excellent tumbler and she hadn't done a back tuck in awhile, when one day she had decided to show off and didn't have a spot...she ended up landing on her neck and now she is parlalyzed from the neck down! SO PLEASE, HAVE A SPOT! The big thing is to remember that this is a "blind skill." That means with a blind skill, you can't see your landing. So you need to do a lot of excercises to keep your spacial awareness in check. I learned on rollers, which are giant gymnastic equipments that nearly all gyms have. It really helps you figure out where you're going, how much spring your hands need, etc! Then you can move on to acutally doing them with a spot. People are going to tell you that you need back flexibility for a spring. This is partly true...it is good to have some and to stretch your back out for handspring exercises, but it's not totally neccessary to do a back bend for this skill. All in all, back walkovers and back handsprings have almost nothing to do with eachother. Take this from a girl who learned her back handspring WAY faster than a back walkover! If you are more of a power person, who has a high rebound on your roundoff, you will be more likely to achieve a back handspring. E-mail me if you need any more tips on anything tumbling! Good Luck and Stay Safe!
hey ive just starting doin backwards wlakover does n e one have any tips on getting more flexible and n e tips on improving my technique?? thanx ever so grateful! luckygenie20@hotmail.com thanx!
I just got my back handspring not long ago. There was someone who posted the "capoeira method" on this thread. I thought he was full of it until I tried it! I learned a back handspring in about 2 WEEKS! That's pretty fast for someone like me! Just find in this thread "Capoeira Method". Screw spotters and equipment! You don't need em! This method kicks ass!
i just managed to do the BHS.. without spotters and whatever u call them.. all on my own.. look more on BHS vids.. spot wat is the impt points and do it.. best to train on the bed or mattresses first b4 u attempt to do on the ground..
I really need help b/c im trying to join the gymnastics team but i cant do a backhand spring or a cartwheel. can anybody pleas email me any info. on how to do this at jnpnshr411@aol.com, thanx
well.. what u need to know... 1. stand straight , arms straight in front of u 2. bend down , arms to the back of u 3. jump vertically and a little to the back and swing ur arms to the back as well. 4. do not keep ur arms , keep them stretched all the while and never i repeat , never contract them. 5. practise more on soft areas like a mat or bed to gain over ur fear and gain more confidence.
i taught myself how to back walk over using an swiss stability ball... i started really low on the ball... as i started my backbend stage, i pushed off with one leg while doing a stretch kick straight up and over... since your leg is kicking over and the other one is pushing, you've got both momentum and strength pushing you over... took me about a month or so of regular practice, but i'm doing it w/o the ball now
I need some help on how to do a backbend walkover. I just can't get me leg over. My friend told me to put me legs closer to my arms and then try to kick over. IT JUST WON'T WORK! Do you have any advice on how to do one?
hi i am wondering how i can do a backhandspring i know i can if i try i judt havent got the confidence to jump backwards im scared of falling i can do back walkovers and front walkover easily i just cant master the back handspring if you can help me please email some information to at nicksmithy29@hotmail.com
You guys dont worry about it! If you are afraid just get your cheer coach to buy your squad some spotting belts. This will help you a lot it will get you confident. If you dont have spotting belts than have someone spott you by putting their arm in the small of your back(while your on mats)you roll over their arm and youve got the handspring! nothing to it but to practice dont be afraid its not hard think its easy and it will be easy!
u know the crab i was instructed to get good at it first now i have. i was instructed to throw myself over backwards from this. any other tips on how 2 teach myself how to do it.
i have like 1 wk to learn how to do a bhs 4 cheerleading tryouts. my friend knows how to do one and has been spotting me.i don't have a fear of going over backwards b/c i've jumped backwards and fallen on my head and neck enough times, but i can't get my arms to go out and support myself. Ne ideas? if u can help me and u have ne tips on ne thing to do w/ a bhs pretty please e-mail me at samsomethin13@frontiernet.net thanx so much
Well, I can't do a back hand spring by myself yet. I almost have it.. but I have a problem where I travel back and sideways. I've tried spotting my hands as I go back, but it doesn't seem to help. Has anybody else had this problem? How did you fix it, thanks! :)
i once had the same prob as u.. wat i did was to just always remember to go straight and not bend to the side.. try to do it more often, as ur body ain't used to the motion yet.. if u are scared of the pain etc, do it on some soft spot like the bed.. that was wat i did and mastered the flip...
Can someone please write legitimate guide here on how to do backhandspring. I cant do one and it probably because the guide people write, bad. If anyone can write good guide to help me, you slick. I think I afraid of backward, how can I releive fear.
okay here's the story....me and my friend dave got dared to jump out onto the floor of the gym during a pep rally and start doing back hand springs when the cheerleaders start doing them.....the cheerleades are completely down with it.....but i just need some pointers on how to do a back hand spring.....i don't think i can get a spotter ....and i don't really have a soft surface to work on ....i'm not really worried about hurting my wrists or ankles or any hiting like that .....i'm just scared that i'm going to hit my head.....my precious head!!!!!.....so n e ways i just need a little aid in this endevour.....PLEASE help me....and feel free to e-mail me with any tips...i could use all the help i can get!....THANK YOU ALL !!!!(and who knows if this goes well i might actually try out for the squad!...thanx again)--CHEER!!!!
So, you got dared into a difficult situation eh? Ok, the back handspring isnt as hard as it is portraied to be. You just got to remember the basic principles. Pretend like your going to sit in a chair, lean back, swing your arms behind you not over your head yet, then jump up some what but mostly backwards while swing your arms up and back over your head( after you lean back dont un-lean back, that was my problem, immediatly jump) put your hands to the side of your head right after your hands swing back and you jump, land on your hands and then push backwards with your arms(eaisier than it sounds, you'll only in the handstand position for a second, it doesnt require strength, just some momentum) and then snap your legs back and land it. Landing it is the hardest part and that isnt hard at all, I have a good link that helped me get over my backward fear which is a problem for everyone, it also has good tips. The URL is: http://www.bboy.org/forums/showthread.php?s=
9834f92fc336547a544fa7c25e02c8a4&threadid=44843 Read this kids statements and watch his video, this helped me out a lot. It is the best thing ive seen so far, but it is simple and obvious.
the BHS that guy did isn't so nice... or well coordinated.. it is like instead of swinging his arms back , he pushes his arms to the top then backwards and then jumps backwards and lands his arms on the ground..
I have so much fear of hurting myself, but I know I can do a backhandspring. The only thing is, I can't even flip over in a bridge. I dont have the power in my stomache. HELP!!!!!!!!!
Hey its Erin I cant do a back walkover. I can do a back bend but when I try to flip my legs over I land on my head!I need tips of how you do a back walkover.Email me at hiphopdancer92@yahoo.com
Thanks QuanQi that information will really help...i really appreciate it......oh and Dixon...i don't plan on doing the b.h.s. perfectly....i just needed the information on how to do the basic movements...and that's what QuanQi provided me with. My main goal is to be able to do the b.h.s .....i can work on technique later....
i need to get a roundoff backhandspring in about a month and a half before i go to competition .. and i really need it cause im in a tumble pass. i can do it on a trampoline but it changes wen i get on the ground .. i dont arch my back enuff .. can u give me some tips so i could possibly get it on my own before competition
Dude, their easy as they look. It just takes balls to do it at first. This is how i first conquered my fear, I rolled back standing up three times. I tried jumping back a few times it didn't work. (Note: Jump more higher then you go back it HELPS.) Just keep going back then your fear game is over.
Hey im getting really upset with my bhs because i did have it like on the grass even to where i could do two and now for some reason i can't do it anymore well i can but i have a mental block right now and i can't make it go away. which i know i can do it because ive done them before . i mean i can do it with out a spot most of the time. but not on the hard floor anymore and tryouts for junior high cheerleader is comming up in 4 months and you pretty much have to do a bhs with out a spot which i can do that but im not sure if they mean hard floor or the softer mat. I need help!!! please help me.!!!
i advise you to not do your bhs on the trampoline because that is just gonna give you that jump where when your on the ground it aint gonna be there to help you jump! believe me i learned the hard way. and as for your question on the high thing with back flip yes pretty much on any back flip or anything your gonna have to jump high if you want it to look good.
i have the same problem i have the fear but when i get that rush to go and know i can do it it always comes at the wrong time like when im doing back handsprings and when it comes right down time to do it i freak out but i can do a back handspring and infact i can do one on the grass two in a row but for some reason i all of a sudden got a mental block of fear and i dont know what im afraid of so i doubt that this helps you but i would suggest when you finnaly get it down on hard floor don't ever skip a beat of doing constantly as you can peace out.
Ive been in gym for 3 months now, i just got back in, grd 4 and 5 i was in it to, but had to leave caz i got osgood schlateral, which basicly didnt lemme do anything, i can do back and front walkovers, but im to scared to do a back hansprding is there a way to learn without a spotter, or tummble track, flexibilitys no prob i can do splits and back fold, with no pain at all :P Im in grd 8 now
the other day i broke my finger doing a back-handspring. im afraid to do another bak-handspring b/c i don't want to go throught the pain again. do you have anytips to help me because i just made my school team and want to get my back-handspring--help!
im a break dancer that wants to improve my dancing by landing a back hand spring. anyone have any suggestions. ive seen people do them before, but I haven't put my finger on the full motion. is it a push technique? any information would be nice. I do a really good back bend, no problems. i also was attempting to do a back hand srping in my living room, using my sofa cushion ( its long , not seperate cushion squares ) and was too scared to try it.
any info would be nice.
e-mail me at runemastersui@hotmail.com or AIM at runemastersui.
I don't know what to tell you except for to try and forget about it. The more you think about it, the worse you're going to do. Just take a deep breath and do it. A girl on my squad broke her arm doing one (she landed wrong) and the only way she got over it was getting over the first one. Don't give up!
i am having problems not being able to my backhan dspring on a harder matt like the cheerleading on es that you find at competition. I have it on a padd ed matt its beautiful my cheer team tells me, but i just can not find the confidence in me to do it on th e harder one. please if u know anything could help thanx
i lost my backhandspring for a while, i wouldn't do it for all the soft mats in the world, but if you s top thinking about what your doing, the backhand spring, and just throw it, its soooo much easier, to get over fear, do a lot of backhandsprings, if y ou need to with a spot, and just keep doing them, th e one day just ask not to be spotted, and just try it , bc you'll know you can do it
OKay I am in gymnastics right now and I am the olde st but yet the worst at back handsprings and round offs. I can't figure out how to turn or bend perfec tly to get them right. I have a really good back ben d except when i go into my back bend position i can' t flip over. I don't think my back is strong enough at this point. Do you know any way of getting my bac k stronger? Well feel free to email me if you got an y information. Thanks a lot...Sammantha
i was scared in the beggining, but most of its men tal. after someone told me not to think much about it, i tried it and barely landed on my feet. at leas t im doing something.
when i was doing it, i di dnt even feel that i went over. just try it.
i watch alot of wrestling and have seen a few wres tlers get seriously injured by falling on their h eads.
this has contributed to the fear i have of doing backhandsprings, i would do one in a pool but i would get chucked out and i dont have the mone y to buy a bouncy castle.
what position shoul d my head be in when i go over
Every time I try to do a bhs I do the same thing as ev ery one else I fall on my head! I think it is because my arms are to weak. could someone please give me s ome excerises to strengthen my arms?
Hi, my school just went in the gym-lympics event and I seriously need help. I'll start out with the wallsit, which was the first event. I didn't last 1 minute, while the limit was 5! My thighs were s haking and so were my calves, so I couldn't get it c alm. I think one part of my problem is my shoes, but that's another story. I know it's my legs. I tried to stand on my toes, but that didn't have much resi stance. I am now training hard as ever with aerobi cs, crunchs, and some other activites so I can rea ch my goal. I was wondering if you had some advic e for me. Any techniques, or excerises I can do to a ctually strengthen my legs, particularly my thi ghs and calves? Thank you very much.
For BHS,if you're landing on your head, your not delaying the jump enough and your not jumping har d enough. You have to jump back and up at the same ti me, and you have to delay the jump until you feel yo u're gonna fall flat on your ass. Think of the laun ch like sitting in a chair, do that motion, and whe n you feel you're gonna fall over, jump back and up as hard as you can, keep your back arched initiall y so that it whips around faster, and keep your arm s almost straight but not locked. This is so you ge t speed but also so that you can push them to get the "spring." I learned this in capoeira by first doi ng macaco, then doing a macaco from standing, the n gradually making it into a back handspring. I th ink it's called macaco solto in capoeira, which k ind of translates into "free macaco" or macaco no t planted.
Very interesting to see that the backhand sprin g is one of the most debated moves, because its pro bally the building blocks to the rest of getting f reak style aerial.
To comment : It doesn't re quire strenght for you to do this, its all a moment um 1 shot move that your whole entire body has to fl ow with. Your legs alone, your back alone, your ar ms alone Cannot perform this by themselves. You m ust realize that the body must all move together a t once, or you'll just flop. Once you get the han g of this move, your level of extremes goes to a lev el you never thought possible
for beginners, i suggest making a hershey kiss s hape with your index fingers and thumb for prepar ation... this will help you keep your arms in more and they will help support more weight. Lean back like you are sitting in a chair, then spring back u sing your stomach muscles to whip your legs over.
Hershey kiss? what the fuck? you're not making a ny sense! Just lean back, and jump back and up! Whi le jumping arch your back and throw your hands. Fo llow your hands with your eyes to ensure that your going straight back. Push with your arms once the y're on the ground to get the "spring" Keep at it an d don't give up!
i need some help with my back handspring, i have n o problem throwing myself backwards and over, an d when i have a spotter my form is great, but when i d o it alone my legs are hideous!! and very spread ap part...ive triend tieing my legs together lacin g my shoes together and everything and no matter w hat i cant get them to stay, any tips?
I have a friend with the same problem.she cant do a good round off beacause her legs dont go togethe r. My trainer tells her to squeeze her butt checks together. thats what keeps your legs together.
Hi, I can do a round off/arab spring and i can do a back flip...SEPERATELY! But i just can't do t hem together, well i can i'm just scared. Even tho ugh i have 2 people supporting me i just seem to slo w down and chicken out. i can do round off back flip on the trampoline but thats because i'm not scare d. Hey I've got a question. How do you learn back han dsprings, backflips etc. on your own? Cause I don 't have anyone who can catch me and I don't train in a gym so I don't have any trampolines and stuff. I' m afraid if I just try it on my own, I end up breaking my head or something :s...

ok, this is my first time visiting this site, so i thought id throw my two cents in on the subject. im 17, study tang soo do, ive been taking martial art s for seven years ,second degree black belt. i pro lly dont have a say in this because most of this stu ff i cant do including a backflip or BHS, but i am an observer and understand everything. one thing i have found with my self as well as other students i teach is that trampolines are bad to start to lear n on. one reason is because they are nothing like t he ground. they give to ur weight and spring u up, t hats there purpose. so y use something that cant b enefit u to real life senerio, unless ur plan to sp ar sumone on a trampoline.
I am going to a really hard time trying to get my ba ck handsprings right! I dont understand! I reall y just want to learn it at home but its soooooooo ha rd! I have a huge fear of falling and hurting mysel f! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!! If you can help please ema il me at Stevens_girl_89@yahoo.com
I can do my back flip but sometimes I get too scare d to fall on my head. The main problem that I have is that my legs crunch up, they don't go up straight. What can I do to make it better? Thank u ;)
I'm a gymnist and the only this that stops you fro m getting it is your confidence. start out w/ a spo tter to teach you the right form. your whole body s hould stay tight the whole time. steps:(1)sit (2 ) jump (3) stay tight and land. it is much easier th an it looks. if you don't want to learn it with a spo tter, do it on a trampoline. you won't get hurt if y ou fall and it gives you more bounce. Once you get i t perfect on there move onto a very cusiony mat and try it. Keep your ears touching your arms the whol e time. You will get it eventually. Just belive th at you can. ***the best way is to take gymnastics* **

Hello I'm 8 years old and I am on a all star cheer te am and we need to know how to do back hand springs my mom does not know how to spot me could you please he lp us I want this more than anything Iam afraid of g oing back but how else besides a pool can I learn th is I do trampoline work and I can do it there but at h ome how can I achive this Please help !!!!
First you start standing up stretched, then you sit with your hips off balanced. So that it appear s you are siting in a chair, at this point your arms want to come down by your side, make sure your ches t is upright and swing up and backward and jump nic e and hard. Tilt your head backwards to look for th e ground and if you jumped hard enough your body wi ll land on your hands and naturally straighten th en you must snap down or push real hard with your ha nds and shoulders to stand back up. If you do not po p out of the skill it is not considered a HAND- SPRI NG< thus you must spring off your hands.
Hey! does anyone know how to get a backhandsprin g without going to the gym by April 5th!?! If you do please tell me like asap! I need to tryout for chee rleader, i have been a cheerleader for 3 years but i only have my front handspring so i need a little h elp on the back. If any of you have some suggestion s i would glady take them! Thanks!
Hey my goal is to do a wall flip so what i figure i s learn a back hand spring, then a backflip then we can start thinking about doing a wall flip. So ya i can do what i call a monkey flip prolly the wrong wo rd for the actual move but what it is, is jumping ba ckwards but using only one hand to do the hand spri ng. Im a pretty flexiable guy my back arches well. The only thing that concerns me is my wrists do the y have to make contact with the ground completly p arralel or can they hit the ground at a 45 degree an gle. That and some fear are keeping me from doing a backhandspring
im trying out for cheerleading next year but all i really know how to do is a cartwheel, roundoff,b ackbend , and a handstand. but i need to learnhow t o do backhandsrings and front flips. i can almost do a front flip its just that i cant always land on m y feet sometimes i land in a backbend and sometime s i dont but i practice on the trampoline so i just b ounce up but when i do land in a backbend i dont know how to pull my self up back into standing position i went to dance class for a year and i really like it so im going back but this dance teacher wasnt like others she was really athletic she made us learn v ery fast and stretch stretch stretch and she was a bout 50 and still could do a handstand and this lad y tought me to do a straight ameerican split!!!! s o please help me learn how to do a backhandspring a nd a front flip!!!! so contact me at ___brous129@ bellsouth.net_____ bye have a great day sig ned cheerleding101
Practice some on doing just a Backbend do a few to w arm ur back up for this stuff. after you have ur bac k limbered out u need to kick o ver a few times ( back bend kick over) just go back a nd throw ur leg over o n the trampoline *it should b e simple*
after this try going back into ur ba ck bend but give it a l ittle jump.. i have done some in 5th grade (in 7th n ow) and quit.. as someone sai d BIG MISTAKE but i am also in gymnastics you peopl e constantly worry ( which i can understand) when u are going to do this just go ( 5...6...7..8) and g o like u are going to a sitting position sorta bend on ur knees, go as if u r doing ur back bend kickover but just give it a LIT TLE jump and maybe have someo ne spot u but i do NOT r eccomend a spotter as it will only weigh the tramp oline down but have someone w atch u from the groun d atleast!!
Here's the thing~ Backhandsprings aren't all t hat easy. Take it from me. Don't expect to have one all that quick, because more than likely it won't happen. Just start by getting a good backbend. Th en after you have one of those, try kicking your le gs over. I strongly suggest that you not try this b y yourself at first. You need someone to spot you i ncase you fall. But once you get the basic concept s, just keep working at it & eventually you will ge t your backhandspring!~
I need help! A backhandspring is not what everyone cracks it up to be. I learned mine in a month, and i am tall and overwieght, plus i am a wuss, so i was scared of it. The only way to learn is to take a tumbling class me ant for cheerleaders. it may take time, but you WI LL get it.
Hello everyone,I have never had gymnastics but I taught myself how to do a cartwheel and a round-o ff.But I want to do a back handspring I always try b ut my feet never leave the ground or I end up just fa lling backwards. If you could give me a very detai led how to and maybe some self-confidence please post it here.I`d really apreciate it.
Dear Ryan i think your problem is you are not jump ing backward you have to that is why it is called a b ack hand SPRING!What you are doing is just fallin g into a simplebacbend (bridge) but you need to to pretend like you are sitting in a chair and as you s it back you will jump backwward into a handstand. then you just swoop your legs over as had as you can it will be easier if you try on a tumble track or a tr ampoline to get some bounce. Just look at the grou nd.
I have trouble in a backhandspring not the flip p art but the keeping your arms strong and staight. if you have any idea of what i'm doin wrong please p ost it please!
Dear Mackenizee, Thank you for your help. But before I try I want to know if you have any tumbles t hat might help me in smaller steps. If u do please p ost them here thanks.
Demmi, If you want to keep your arms straight f ind the position you want then when your doin ya ba ck handspring just lock your arms in that positio n.I do that all the time.I`m a cheerleader.
Some other flips you can try are these, hope they help Ryan:Backwalkovers,Bridge kick overs, Ba ckward pike rolls(simple).I you have any questi ons please post.
I know how to do a back handspring I can do it on a tr ampoline but not on flat ground because im too afr aid im going to get myself hurt. If any1 knows wh at t do please reply to this or email me.
I still canno't to a great backhandspring, even with a spotter. But, I find it crucial to have the r ight spotter. I won't trust just anyone and you sh ouldn't either. You need someone who knows what t hey're doing and is strong enough to thow you just in case. Don't just try doing it at home on the gras s either, that's how you will hurt yourself. My ad vice is to go to a local gym and ask a coach for help. (If you live near Madison, WI, I suggest Madtown T wisters- ask for Doug cause he's the bomb and can t how anyone over with those muscles).
I have been trying to get my backhandsprings for the longest time and i need help because i can do th em but not fast enough. can u help me make my legs fl ip over faster? thanks much!
The only way you can do a backhand spring is not to be scared and have confidence in yourself. you ju st have to bend your knees a little then look sligh tly upward and the just jump back and then the rest will explain itself when u jump high back it will j us flow by by putting your hands down when u flip.t ats all its easy just dont be scared to jump back

for people who basicly know how to how to do a back kickover/walkover but just can't get all the way over, i have some advice. push as hard as you can of f of one leg and practice getting half way over aga in and again. evntually, when you're comfortabl e, get half way over, and PUSH PUSH PUSH with your s tomach muscles and arms to get over. maybe you can pretend you want to kick someone who's behind you . lol
I dont c y every1 finds them so hard, basicly, if u have been doin gym 4 a while, u can do a back walkove r, and have a strong kick, bh springs shudnt b 2 har d, 4 me i have tons of back flexibility , and can do a bridge fold, so it really isnt a problem, but keep practising and u will get it ( is it just me, but i fi nd it easier 2 do 1 on the tumble strip, aposed 2 the t-track, theres less bounce, but also less impac t on yer handz):P
ok i can bring my legs back together when i go into a bridge and land like i just did a backhandspring but i dunno how to like throw myself back! please h elp, my email-sweetiehunni9892@yahoo.com i re ally need the help~
Hey, I'm in a rut. See I'm a dancer and I have an aws ome hip hop solo but it needs a trick to wow the most ly gymnastic judges, I wanted to contact you. I'm in desperate need in the talent to be able to learn to do a back handspring. I ask for you expertise, p leaseeeee help me. Thank you, Kayla
Doing a backhandspring takes a lot of arm streng th...But what you should do is practice doing a ba ckbend first from standing up. Once you get used t o that get someone to help you flip backwards from a backbend. If you get really use to that then try g oing into a backbend and then push off with your le gs and its okay if you land on your knees the first t ime, But really try to practice landing.

Accually A back walk over is alot eaisier than a B rige kick ove becouase when you do a Backwalkover you don't stop you keep it constant i can do a backw alkover but i Can't do a brige kickover. Brige kic kovers is where you stop in a bridge than kick over but back walkovers are all in one piece plus ALOT e aisier.

Hi, Now I can do a back flip from standing and I c an do a round off/arab spring then back flip. i've just recently learnt them and gradually i've bee n getting faster and higher. Last week i was pract icing it for a competition i went fast in my round o ff then i thought i was going to do a somersault(bu t i can't i haven't got enough height for that yet) it felt like i was out of controll and i was going to do something really scary. I stopped and didn't g o back, but now I am scared to do a back flip. Well i c an do it after about half an hour of building up the courage but even then it's not very good as i need m ore momentem and i need to go faster but i'm scared incase i go out of controll again. it's very frust rating when i know i can do it. Please could somebo dy help or e-mail me or something please? :-) th anks Rob :-)
Hi Jessyca, I remember when i was learning that : -). You need to push your cheast forward when you a re in bridge, your shoulders need to come over you r hands. The closer your hands are together the ea sier it will be to get over. Try kicking over from a n incline, off the sofa, the couch, a hill or a spri ngboard. Hope this helps
i learned to do this move just yesterday. i first did some warmups like hip stretches, legs, arms, and chest. Then i did it on my matress. first i did a weird half corkscrew backflip to the side to get a bit of the feel. Then i let it all out, i just jumped high flipped back and stuck my arms out. i did it on a matress the first time; it's good to start off th ere. it'll help if u wip ur arms back over ur head ri ght before you jump. but get good jump because you might end up falling on ur head. it doesn't hurt ur arms will attommaticaly save you. after this try it on grass and don't do it on an inckine it's much h arder and freaky the first time. wear lossse clot hs but not too loose. remember jump high but don't y tuck in ur knees. just jump on launch back . you ju st have to do it once and thenn it'll be easy. Good L uck
the best way to do it is by not doing the gay bridge way. Only pussies do a bridge and then go back. i do it by jumping and then fliping back. Your hands sh ould come by themselves. Then after my hands touc h the gound the momentum gets me on my feet. The rev iew above tells you how to do it perfectly and the g ood non-bridge way. Doing a bridge and going back is the gay way! It's not a backhand spring so screw all you retards doing bridges! It should be calle d a 'bridge pullover' or something!
I strongly suggest a cheerleading gymnastics c lass with spotters. The people there will Help yo u learn at your own speed and you WILL get a backhan d spring. I am sorta fat, not flexible really, and very lazy, but after two months, i learned this st uff.
If you really want a back handspring the best thi ng is to go to the gym or take a tummbling class ever yone is different and it takes time to get it you ha ve to have a good backbend you should do a bridge ev eryday and backbends try to get a back walk over if you don't have one go into a back bend and rock and t ry to kick over and once you have that try to kick over with 2 feet if you get that you can pretty much do a backhandspring the only thing you have to do i s put the jump in to it the best thing is to have a spo tter it's the safe way use 2 spotters untill you ne ed one once you need one then use a oned hand spotte r and when they and you thing your ready try it.
THERE IS A SIMPLE WAY TO MASTER BACK WALK OVERS. G O UP TO A STRONG TALL WALL WITH BOTH FEET TOUCHING A T THE TOES. GO INTO A CRAB BACK POSITION. PUT YOUR R IGHT FOOT AGAINST THE WALL. USING YOUR RIGHT FOOT PUSH WITH ALL OF YOUR MIGHT (RIGHT FOOT ALONE) TO G O OVER THROUGH A HAND STAND INTO A STANDING POSITI ON. FOR EXTRA HELP YOU MIGHT WANT TO STRAIGHTEN YO U RIGHT FOOT AFTER THE PUSH-OFF TO USE IT TO WEIGHT YOUR BODY TO A STANDING POSITION. TRY TO LAND RIGH T FOOT FIRST BENDING IT TO ABSORB THE FORCE OF THE L ANDING. DO THIS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AND SLOWLY(ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY) YOUR BODY WILL GET USED TO PU SHING OFF AND YOU WILL REALISE THAT YOU BEARELY NE ED TO USE THE WALL FOR A PUSH OFF. AFTER THAT TADA!! YOU CAN DO A WALK OVER.
ok what are some eASY STEPS FOR A BACK WALKOVER PL EASE I NEED HELP WITH IT I USE TO BE ABLE TO DO A FRONT ONE CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME TIPS ON THAT ONE TO.

i have been taking gymnastics for a whole six wee ks now. i am really into extreme karate but am not a ble to do any tricks at all. i am also fifty pounds o ver weight- i have been doing karate since i was fi ve, i am now 17. the way the instructor taught me ho w to do one was put your hands up in the air, swing th em to your thighs without bending your knees more than 45deg. then swing your body back, arch your b ack, keep looking at your hands and shoot toward t he wall behind you. never stop looking at your han ds!!!!! if i can do it you guys can definately do it to. peace out!

ok here is what you do if you want to learn a back ha ndspring. first what i did was learn them on the tr ampoline. once you have that down then i would get a matress from some bed in your house. this may sou nd weird but then put it on your trampoline then do them on the matress. then do them from the trampol ine matt onto the matress so you get the fell. then put the matress out on your grass or in a open area. then try them on top of the matress so you feel like you are on the trampoline still. once you do that d o almost the same thing as before, stand on the gro und and do the back handspring onto the matress so when you flip back your hands will go onto the matr ess not the ground. now once you have mastered tha t then you are ready for the ground. if you think of it when you are doing them onto the matress it is li ke a step-up and you will have plenty of time to do t hem on the ground.
well i hope that helped but hey you might as well try it you have nothing to los er
help me please .....i can not do a backhand sprin g and i really really really really really want to . so pretty please email me and tell me how to do thi s i no i could but im really scared i cant do it and my back walkover really sucks cauz i usually go side ways.please explain to me in pesific details how to do this. cauz i HAVE to do it if its the last thing i do.
Once u just start to go back and atempt it YOUR FEA R IS OVER!!! So when u say i try and get partly over, its not really fear anymore (maybe a little) Star t (if u have no spotter/pool etc with just guts i st arted in a crouthed position then just flip your h and behind (like a backroll) and go up into a hands tand. Then just work on it from there moving your b ody a bit higher each time. You will soon get the ha ng off it. It really isnt very hard, you just need 2 comit and you wil lbe fine
Im having a bit of a problem when im doing my back h andsprings, when i flip backwards onto my hands m y arms always seem to bend and my head touches the g round, so if anyone can help me out please email me .

hi! heres some tips that might help on a back walk over. first u need to perfect a backbend. its help ful if u have good flexibility. last summer i coul dn't do back bends at all! everytime i leaned back i just fell! if ur begenning its helpful ta start w ith a bed or couch. stand with ur legs about a foot a nd a half apart (it may vary, and once u get better u can move ur legs closer to the center) and half the bed or couch behind u. then arch ur back like mad, p ut ur arms up straight, and lean back, look at the p lace ur landing while ur in ur arch before u land. o nce ur confident with a couch or wutevr, move to th e floor. use a carpet or grass, and a spotter is a go od idea. so now uve got ur backbend keep workin on e m and make it really strong and easy fo u. then to do a backwalkover put your stronger leg, the one ur g onna kick off in front do a backbend and coming com fortably close to ur legs is easier but dont do it s o it hurts. as soon as yer hands touch the ground ki ck as hard as you can, keep arching, and bring yer l egs over yer head, one at a time. the closer u come b ehind ur hands the easier it is ta stand up, but aga in, don't hurt urself. this takes practice! so ke ep workin and dont give up! hope i could help! and s ry it took so long ta write
look people im like 14 year old boy who learned the back handstand in like what ? 10 minutes? I d idn't had a spotter :P didnt't had anything o nly a soft matras ( It is very neccesary to have a so ft -> not to soft bed matras) and there we go lol first i had was very scared for breaking my neck o r something like that And i didnt knew how to do a backwalkover thge only tricks i can do is hands tand and front handstand i was very scared to go backwards because u dont know what there's behin d u =/ So this how I did it first i just jumbed ba ckwards on my back (wich didnt hurt AT all) so ye ah why not go all the way back lol i followed the i nstructions on the net I sat like a chair and whe n i had the feeling like i was falling back i jumped xtremely high and just put my hands on the matra s and BAM I did it the second try i did i landed o n my head wich was like trowing a egg on my head (in n ormal words it didnt hurt) and keep on going lik e that and that and that lol it was very fun alt ough Now i cant do it anymore cos my hand hurts al lot so like I said this is what u need a spott er (Very optional cos I didnt had one) A soft mat ras (very important if u do it for ur first time but not to soft) and got a hellot of balls just get over the shit fear and JUMP extend ur hands and t here u can do a BHS i hope this will help u and pe ace out from qiqi BHS BS :D
I just ate AND I AM AFRAID I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO A B HS AGAIN, I DIDNT DO IT FOR A WEEK and i dont think i c an do it again i want to do it again because my han d is healed PEACE QIQI THE BHS DUDE
