this is the move that bruce lee does in most of his movies, its a beautiful and powerful kick if done correctly, but essentially useless because it requires so much preparation.
The flying side kick is not at all useless, I have used it uncountable times in sparring and in competition and scored heavily. If performed well it can sway the judges.
When doing a flying kick run at medium speed jump as high as you can and jump on the opposite leg that you're going to kick with, then extend your front leg and tuck in your back leg. When you get ready to go down, bring your leg back underneth you.
The flying side kick is one of the fanciest and most famous moves in taekwon-do,(refered to in traditional taekwon-do as a running reverse jumping side kick)and it is also used in some forms of karate. The key to doing a good flying side kick is practice, and practicing it correctly. When preparing to do this kick you want to start at a medium run until you are ready to kick. One of the keys at this point is to avoid doing a whole lot of "baby steps"(where you start taking extremely short steps in apprehension of hitting your target.)When you are about to jump make sure to have your kicking leg propel you up into the air(your back leg!)Once in the air you want to rotate your body so that your hips are over and your side(your kicking side) is facing your opponant/boards/bag/air/whatever.Making sure your leg is already chambered, side kick as well as you can and at the same time pull your bottom leg back as hard as you can so that it can act as a chamber does for your punches. Upon landing be sure to stay sideways and not fall over!
In Executing flying side kick, first you must learn how to executed side kick. when you already mastered side kick. do the following. use a preperatory run and jump as high as you can, then execute side kick
Flying sidekick is an effective kick if your opponent is not alert or slow. it gives your opponent some time to move away while you are in "air time". the momenteum that brings you across the distance will make you recover alot slower, thus giving your opponent a chance to hit you.
lofl thats hilarious dude...and for all you wigger idiots you dont know what you are talking about dont shoot your mouth off saying "this is easy if you cant do this your stupid" just shut up noone cares if you can do it pat yourself on the back if ya want recognition tell your mommy...k?
and for you true martial artists liek myself keep up the good work helping the newbies cuz we were all newbies at a time and still are to alot of things so ghetto wigger idiots cram it
Ok I took Tie ... Ok I went to a super mart school but I practiced to perfection.... Or as close a visualy possibul...... The kick is Awsome... I did it over 2 people through a board and internaly brused the person holding the board internaly..... Moral of the story this kick is not a toy... I am now a Kempo artist (I'm currently yellow.) I'm working gymnastics.... cartwheel... AwYah=] But the thing is that when you run and jump it looks good but takes a ton of room.... Jumping from standing is my preferred way... Why might you ask. Because 1: Small Dojo = No running room 2: Sparring rings are SMALL. (Or at least where I fight.) 3: I don't want to kill the person. 4: If point fighting, all you will do (because you only can go in about cheast high) is 1: hurt the gaurd or 2: break ribs or knock the wind out of them.
The trick for a standing one is that you jump up at about 45 degrees Side kick while the other leg tucks.
I have heard of doing a hook kick followed by a round house.... While in the air. I don't quite think that if you make contact it is possibul..... Mabey for use in Fourm/Kata...
I know a guy who can do a back-spinning roundhouse kick in the air followed by a reverse hook kick while still aerial. Crazy shit. As for using the flying side kick in full contact fighting, it's not a very good idea because if you can land a flying side kick, that means that you have time to land like 2 other kicks in the frame that it'd take. Fight smart. But, if the guy practically offers you a chance and you're up by enough, I say go for it.. I know I do. :D Although, I always prefer a sliding side-kick, like a friggen explosion.
hey tae kwon dude, I bet that guy who can do all those spinning jump kicks cant beat my move,Ill wait till he's done with his jump kicks and he's good and tired, then Ill run up to him and stick a "DRY ROOT" in him. PS... I bet he'd like that.
i feel sorry for the people out there who think to do a flying kick all you need to do is jump and stick your leg out!! theres a lot more to it than that! im not going to even waste my time telling you how. when you see some one jump 8 people then smash through a concrete block only then can you appreciate the skill to deliver this kick correctly
hey, a lot of this stuff will hav prob been posted before but i cant be arsed reading it so ill just give you my tips anyway. You dont need to be able to jump high/far to do this kick but you do if you want to make it look flash. As you expect just take a run up, jump high and forwards (ur opponent is gonna move so you need to chase them down)then stick your best leg out to the side straight at a height you are comfortable doing a normal side kick at. Make sure to have a good guard as well otherwise it looks sloppy. You can pose your arms, but personally i think it just looks stupid so i have a regular TKD guard. I see a lot of people that can fly side kick but it dosnt look any good. The reason for this is they leave their back leg trailing (straight down, close to the floor). In competition i suggest doing that otherwise you could fall and look like a tit. But to make it look good you can either tuck your leg underneath you or stick it out straight behind (the behind is a new method of gaining power with it, the tuck is more traditional). I tuck purely cause im inflexible and cant do the splits. Just a final note, this can be good for comps, but its better to just jump straight up, not fly. (best when somebody is machine-gunning you at waist level so you can't get in, get above them) So anyway these are my tips on flying kicks. Best one ive done is jump over six people on their hands and knees and put my foot through 3 inches of pine. Not as impressive as the concrete block above but im only 15. To see a pic of me doing my kick look here http://www.trickz.com/content/pictures/user/0764.jpg My face is a bit messed cause of the light but its the kick ur there to see. Neway good luck.
useful tips people, i have a couple of things to add which i have learnt after attaining 1st dan itf taekwondo. with this particular kick, it is VITAL to tuck the supporting leg under your body. Allow me to explain why- front snap kick in the bollocks! ouch! front snap kick in the supporting leg, not so bad, considering the sword of your kicking leg is already in their fACE. what im saying is the tucked leg guards your crotch, and enables you to clear something (in my case on the street once; a car bonnet). as for the discussion on running or not, i find if you start with your kicking leg back, spring off the front leg, kick with the rear, and tuck up the supporting leg, you will be surprised at the power(ive broken several boards like this.) also, for those of you who do point sparring taekwondo, when the referee breaks the fight, when it restarts this technique works beautifully. i floored some guy once who was a higher grade with a flying side kick to the chest as soon as it restarted-2 points! anyway enough rambling
I am so glad that I found this website. I have been searching for tips on performing the flying side kick. I have found lots of useful information and practice techniques on this site today.
Jumping flying sidkick!!! well lets be logical about. When fighting as in real fighting not poin t fighting (which is a joke in my eyes) there will n ot be many times when you can use the jumping side k ick, in fact you will have to be damn skillful to us e any sort of kick above waist, without it getting cought or your ass on the floor. From what I know so far your better off being sudden by quickly jumpi ng up and kicking out with your lead leg, instead r unning. (think about it how much space do you have to run up in a reall fight!).Best thing to do is try it out for yourself and be logical and see what wor ks for you. And a tip spar with people for real not p oint sparing but spar all out and see if you can mak e your kicks work. As the saying gos you fight how y ou train!!! No one counts points on the street in f act by standers will put a fist or foot in!!! Have f un be logical!
Think, or whatever your name is, you seem to have missed the entire point of this website. I agree t otally with your points, i would not kick in a figh t, full stop, never mind jumping. But this websit e is not about how to fight people on the street, it s about how to show off doing flash stuff. The flyi ng side kick is relatively simple compared to a lo t of tricks, but done well it can still look really good. (i can impress my mates with it, just find me summat high to do it over) I dont mean to have a go, i m just saying dont go off on one trying to prove peo ple like myself wrong that have posted tips here i n order to help others that cannot yet perform thi s trick. (yes we are talking the trick version, th e one that requires a run up)
This kick is like anything you want to master in t he martial arts. You got to practice. Martial art s has to become your way of life. Just think about h ow it is done and beleive you can do it. If you teach yourself you will be twice as good as it. But make s ure your Master watches you perform it to make sur e you are on the right track.
oooooookkkkkk...lol, first off, the flying si de kick is pointless! why jump?! you miss or they c atch you with a round house while you're in air you 're taking a hard crash, none of ya's are bruce lee nor will ever be as fast to be able to score it perfe ctly in a real fight, no offence to all you taekwon do's but 'tis all true, and i understand that some of you just want to show off with some pretty kicks ...just one thing you should know, no one likes a s how off, i can do all these kicks, EASY. i've been s tudying martial arts for a long time...but i'm no t going to show off some flying side kick six feet i n the air, instead i'm just going to get the job don e. That will be all for now...
this kick ppl mite think its ezy but most of them w ho havnt practice this does it with alot of flaws s um ppl do a pumping side kick n get mistaken it 4 a fl ying side kick first thing off u need leg muscle 4 h eight second thing if ur heavy lose weight n u need msucles to be tight so ur body can move smoothly 3r d thing amkes sure u get a fats momentum n practice ur side kick u need a good chamber n fast snap it wil l be hard to get but if u practice it enuff then im su re u can do it n make sure u do it rite i had trouble te h frist time i did it cuz i didnt chamber rite
Ok so I'm an orange belt and I've been selected to perform a flying sidekick break over two crouche d classmates and the waist high extended leg of a b lack belt who has just broken with a stationary si dekick as part of a parade demonstration. Having practiced about a dozen times so far in the dojang successfully, I'd like ideas on improving the fl ash factor of the kick. I know tuck the rear leg and execute with arms in "guarding position". What e lse can I do to make this an impressive demonstrat ion?
Im going for my black belt in 7 days and i have to prepare a written annaylisis of a flying side kick, i was hoping to get some info here, but u guys just talk to much bull. only a few things actually helped me. Thanks anyways, and remember, helping others learn is always apart of helping yourself learn.

im writing a book with lots of karate and stuff involved but i dont know what half of the moves are. any help is greatly appriciated. you can ask me to send you the parts where i am going to use it. thanks a ton
I actually used this kick effectively as a'stop hit'(as Bruce Lee called it). This guy raised his leg up ready to snap it out and I simply jumped sidekicked his leg, jamming his attack.
