  1. jumping up and flipping forward as hips rotate over top. usually more difficult than a back tuck, because it's a blind landing and you need more height
Also called: front tuck, mortal de frente

It's simple
by Aussie on 2001-07-18
This trick is the real name for a front flip and is quiet easy to do once you learn it. First you must learn how to land. It is a good idea to start on some gym mats or something soft. But a trampoline is good because you can get enough height to learn the landing. But it doesn't matter.
Now if you are on mats or grass run at medium pace towards the mat and just before you take off make the last step into a sought of a skip or hop with both feet. Then with all your might jump UP as high as you can and as you do this bring your knees up close to your chest. At the peak of your jump roll your whole body down and swing your arms to give you momentum. Finish off by landing on your feet and when they hit throw your hands forward so your body follows. It will probably be a rough landing at first but if you can land on your but then you are on the verge of doing this trick. The main thing is to jump high and never forward. Enough practice and you can do it from a round off or cartwheel. Micha does this in a video on the Swiss Tricks website at http://kickme.to/tricks which can be found on the links page.

C.B.D. jump more up than forward and tuck tightly

oh yeah.....

if it helps, try to imagine that you're flipping over something...

by JD on 2002-06-14
The main thing is to jump up as high as u can and swing your arms down to give momentum. Only problem is if you overrotate then you'll probly land on your feet then fall forward. Which happens to me sometimes. But trust me it is worth it. Today i can flip no problem which looks good when scoring a goal. Trying to learn a backflip now.

Front Tuck
by Anonymous on 2002-06-25
When doing the front tuck, you need to make sure you give yourself enough momentum by running at a medium pace. Also, remember to jump high, but don't wait too late to tuck your knees into your chest and rotate. I myself am working on this and will most likely be able to do it just fine shortly. Keep on practicing!

Question

Is it easier to do front flips by a running start or standing? Today I put some couch cushions down and tried to do a standing front flip. I land on my butt everytime!

When I try a front tuck, for some reason I find myself kicking out of it when I'm upside down and end up landing on my neck. Why am I doing this?? Help?

by Anonymous on 2002-10-09
i keep landing on my butt when i try this can anyone help i have enough hieghth i just can't spin fast enough

Try it like this
by Invisible Shadow on 2002-10-29
Rather than think of it as pulling your legs in to your body, do this instead. Run forward (or jump on a tramp) and jump up. WAIT. let your feet leave the ground before your bring chest DOWN to your knees, not bring your knees to your chest. This helps you to generate the neccessary rotation.

Hey Burn and other wanting-to-learners!!
by Grant Valiquette on 2002-11-14
Well i am 14 years of age and have been doing these since i was 11. If you are not landing right on youre feet...try what everyone else is doing....jumping as high as you can but not jumping far atall. You want to jump high and not far. When u near top high hold youre knees and tuck together. If you chicken out in the middle of ur flip like Burn then burn....try practicing in the snow..in high piles of it and then you dont have to worried about crushing urself on the ground. This is wheree i learned and i overcame my fears. Also if ur not too much of a pussy go into gymnastics. I did and it helped alot... and u dont have to wear spandex (tight clothes) or nething like most peeps think you do!!! good luck and keep tryin' boys!! peace....oh e-mail me if u want!!!!

I always lansd sitting, I cant get on my feet! Please email me at joonik_90@sunpoint.net If u got tips...

they r very easy if u get the right form
by Dave on 2003-01-11
ok all i did was run fast jump hi but not forward. u will c that this is harder then it looks because ur instincts will tell u to push forward. when u jump wait like until u feel u r almost upside down the rapidly tuck ur knees into ur chest . u dont have to grab ur knees jus curl into a ball. the landing hurts ur feet bad wen u first do it. Remember ne baody part that iis hanging out will slow ur rotation down good luck. I jus recently tryed a walll frontflip wish me luck laterxx

tucking is hard
by funnce on 2003-02-05
remember to jump UP and to TUCK, it's usually REALLY hard to hold your tuck at first, but that's really the only hardest part (after the 50 times of running and stopping before the flip thinking to yourself..."i'm gonna do this... *runs* *stops* heck no."). And just remember to jump UP and not forward and to TUCK. easier said than done.

. . . .
by DRUNKEN MASTER on 2003-02-06
Height is most important and rotation you must spin right round. But not too much.

. . . .
by DRUNKEN MASTER on 2003-02-10
If you have just started trying this move then dont try this. But if youve mastered this move like me and youre too scared to attempt this move on concrete or any other hard surface dont be. Doing it on a hard smooth surface gives you more ability to do the move. Unlike grass where youre feet sink in a little.

front tuck
by itsme on 2003-02-22
why do i find the back tuck alot harder if this is supposed to be easier..N E 1

. . . .
by DRUNKEN MASTER on 2003-02-23
Thats just it its not easier.

no one mentions the arms..
by monkeyjay on 2003-03-30
y'all trying to do a front tuck? well, the way we learnt it is called a 'punch front'.. basically as you run into the move (speed is important, cos you turn that horizontal speed into height) keep your elbows out, and your hands by the sides of your head. do a small pre-jump and land on both feet, then as you jump, 'punch' your hands FAST into the air. this gives you quite a bit more height.. then with your arms straight, just rotate them down to your knees (which should be tucked up as much as you can).. and voila!

oh, and make sure to untuck so you can land :)

hope this helps some of yous fullas!

oh yeah..
by monkeyjay on 2003-03-30
remember in a back tuck, its your legs that come up to rotate your body.. In a front tuck its your arms that get thrown down to rotate your body.

they are quite important!

same thing really. well not really.. but theory is sound.. maybe.

I love to do this...
by Anonymous on 2003-04-13
I work at a movie theatre and during closing a bunch of us guys play around running across the wall and stuff like that. A few months ago I taught myself to front flip off of a in-ground sandbox. Basically I've always been afraid to land on my head but I just got the courage to do it and it was nothing. Tonight at the theatre I did a front flip off the candy counter for the first time and I was praised by everyone. I find it easier to spring up after doing a quick hop, you don't really need any speed if you do it off something high. My advice is attempt this in a sandbox.

pain
by B-Boy Shadowman on 2003-04-20
dudes i can do the front summy as long as i don't chicken out but why isit impossible to get high enough to kick out? i always land tucked up in a ball and my feet slam into the ground hard fucking up my ankles and my shin etc. has anybody been able to do the rotation in the air (on a normal surface without a trampoline!), kick out, and then land nice and softly by bending their legs? If so, holla back coz i really am doin myself damage by landing with my legs bent.peace

front wall?
by Chobie on 2003-05-30
Is it possible to do a front wall flip?

. . . .
by Anonymous on 2003-06-17
You could try it, but i think you'd end up with one hell of a headache afterwards. You'd have to sacrafice A LOT of height to go far enough back to start flipping, so you will probably either not make it, slam your head into the wall, slam your head into the ground or slam your legs into the wall on the landing. I don't think this would be the wisest trick to try on a wall.

ok this makes me mad
by Wilber III on 2003-07-09
This really makes me mad, people keep sayin that back tucks are way easier than front tucks, but that is not true, i cannot do a back tuck and its drivin me crazy. and u kno what, its drivin me crazy
Peaceizit out, wilber!

FUN!!
by Mike on 2003-07-27
I love to do the front flip.. i can jump over trash cans and other stuff... and it is not so hard..first time i did land on my butt all the time..but soon i learn how to do...if you are scared, you can first use a mattres or something you can land on that is soft...the secret is do every trick is to "NOT" "GIVE" "UP"...=)

Wilber's Problem
by Chris on 2003-07-27
Backtucks are easier..only because you can see where your going and judge your landing, front tucks, you have about a split second to judge it.

Frontflip Advice
by Brian on 2003-08-08
Alright front flips are like the easiest and non scary flip out there it took me about a week training about a hour a day to do them flat ground with good landings. The trick is to get a running start average speed and take a little hop before you do and then jump up as high as you can with your arms in the air swing them down to your knees which should be tucked into your chest and the flip forward break the tight tuck and bring your legs straight down for a landing. If you need more advice on these or backflips email me at evilbsm@yahoo.com

front flip
by help on 2003-09-12
The first time i tried the frontflip i got it. I had waited a couple days after that so that i wouldn't end up screwing my legs. The only problem is that when i went out to do it again i couldn't do it anymore. I would just run and jump and turn my frontflip into some kind of crazy front handspring.

Does anyone have any idea on what i am doing wrong and how i could fix it.

Formulia of jumping
by Rikk Law on 2003-10-15
If you do a standing jump you tend to go straight up. If you lean foward as to fall on ur face and then jump, you go foward. If you lean backwards, you go back. Keep this in mind when trying to direct youself in a certain direction

you dont even need a map. just find a grassy area. its all phsycological. so to prove to yourself it doesnt hurt just fall straight back on your back in the grassy field, of course. good luck.

Hey I need help on my front tuck. both standing and running. I cheer for a all star team and the coachs really do not know alot about front tucks. I can almost land my standing on a cheese mat and I can do it running on the tumble track. But I just can really seem to do it. It feels like I am always doing something wrong.

front flips
by Brian on 2003-11-07
Hi I have been doing tumbling tricks for four months or so now I can already pull out front tucks and back tucks on grass landing almost straight up for both. I can also do other stuff on grass or concrete like back and front handsprings, something like a 180 front flip, a side flip, sometimes when I do my back tucks on the grass I dont even tuck and end up twisting in the middle of it pulling off a 180 back flip. I can do one handed front handsprings, and am working on one handed back handsprings. Out of all the tricks I can do front tucks have always came easy to me I used to be able to land them standing straight up until I hurt my ankle a little, but I got so good at them I can land them standing still with no running start at all. What you need to do is to really tuck and swing your arms down hard it should get you good momentum.

Front everything
by Steve on 2003-11-07
Hi I have been doing self training tumbling tricks for about a year now and I love doing front tricks the best I can do front tucks, regular front flips without tucking, standing still front tucks, front flip layouts, front flash kicks, multiple front handsprings ect. Front tricks are so easy just run really fast and really just think what is the best way to get front momentum. I do not really have a whole lot of backward tricks mainly back tucks, and back handsprings, everything I do is on the grass.

Front Flip
by Dave on 2003-11-22
ok. I find that using pillows or cushions are really handy, especially when you land on your lower back. I read a Front FLip is 10% mental, about 80% Flipping over, and 10% trying to land. If you land on your back, get the HECK up and do it again. Reading Internet advice may give you a clue, but you have to actually get off the PC and just do one. I have only landed a few front flips, but trust me, you have to Actually GO AND DO IT.

Good Luck

Dave

Clearing up front/back tucks
by Adam on 2004-07-03
People keep askign which is easier and there is l ots of debate about it. Front tuck is less scary an d easier rotation as you move your arms/body towa rds your legs, rather than the other way around in a backtuck. The reason back tucks are (meant to be ) easier is the landing. With a front tuck it is MUC H MUCH harder to land (when you learn a front tuck y ou can get the rotation easy but the landing is har d) whereas a back tuck is the oppisite, rotation i s harder but landing is easier. Not only this but a front tuck you need more height to judge the landi ng and rotate. Go try em!

Advice from a GYMNAST
by Andrea on 2004-08-22
Well, here's some advice from a different stand point: I am a competetive elite gymnast, so I hope that the information I'm sending ya will help all those of you self-trained tricksters. Now, I've been able to do the front tuck since about 7 years o ld, so it's second nature to me...in time, it will be for you as well.

On any ground/floor surfa ce, there are several ways to do this skill/trick , and you can develop your own style.

FROM A RU NNING START:
1. The punch-swing method: you'l l want to take several steps, building up your mom entum, DO NOT slow down your last step, instead, I NCREASE your intensity as you go. Your last step w ill be a two-legged jump (a punch), and as you jump , swing your arms UP to give yourself momentum. Ju mp UP, NOT forward. NEVER jump forward. Timing is everything. You will begin to rotate when your ar ms are about the level of your chest and straight o ut in front of you, NOT straight up, because this w ill diminish your speed of rotation. If you want y our arms straight up to begin, you must start diff erently.

2. To begin with your arms straight up, you will run forward, and, on your last step, i t will again be a two-legged jump...I like to call this last step a PUNCH because, in all actuality, you are literally PUNCHING the floor with your le gs to get your height. Your arms will be straight u p above your head here, and with your arms you will reach UP, this is IMPORTANT...DO NOT reach forwa rd...NEVER FORWARD, ALWAYS UP. It is like you are jumping straight up to hit as high as you can on a wa ll. When you reach the peak of your jump, DO NOT bri ng your chest and arms down to your knees. This wil l diminish your rotation and result in a crash. No t fun. Instead, bring your knees UP INTO your ches t and grab with your hands if you like. Here you wil l rotate, and hopefully have enough time to exten d and land quite easily.

3. This third method is called a Russian front. I don't recommend this style unless you have experience with the front. I haven't seen any tricksters do this style yet, b ut thought I'd include it anyway, just for fun. In this trick, instead of your arms giving you heigh t in front of you, they will swing BACK and up. Flex ibility is key--if you have tight shoulders, you will not be able to do this trick. Again, you will r un and PUNCH, but as you do this, your arms will swi ng behind you and UP, giving you momentum. Timing is difficult to learn on this trick, or it was for m e, way back when. ;) If you wish to learn this style , try to watch videos of gymnasts performing it or get an experienced gymnast or coach to help you, i t is difficult to explain in a tutorial.

FROM A STANDING POSITION:
There is only one method I 've seen tricksters use on this trick from a stand , and this is it: Simply bend your knees, swing you r arms up as you JUMP AS HIGH AS YOU CAN, and when you r arms and your jump reach the peak, rotate! Easy! ;)

Hope this helps, have fun with this techni que, and don't be afraid to go big! JUMP JUMP JUMP! !!

Front Tuck

Heres how to do it:

1. Run at a fast pace
2 . Jump Up, Not Foward
3. Throw your arms down as f ast as you can and tuck as hard as your can
4. Land
If your landing on your back then your probably not tucking good enough.
