  1. a kip-up with only the head touching the ground. often seen in wushu forms.
  2. a front handspring with the head also touching the ground. [MEDS]
  3. a forward spring on just the head.(see Drunken Master) [MEDS]
  4. Placing your head down on the ground and whipping your legs over to land on you feet. The motion is much like doing a Kip, however it looks similar to a front handspring done using your head. Often done with out putting you hands down. [fuzzymonk]
Also called: head kip, head-flip, head-spring

Useful Tip

When head kipping, place your palms high up on your thighs. Then when you are about ready to kip up slam (push) down hard on your thighs. This gives you extra height. It really does work well.

head flippin'

hi, i've always been curious about this move. i can do them without a problem so long as my hands are placed on the ground to support my head and flip over. is there much of a difference without the hands or is it alot more different. any info/help on this move would be appreciated

If you want to see sick head kips, find "Shaolin Temple" with Jet Li. This flick is full of classic Shaolin Wushu with Five Style, Drunken and Eagle Claw.

Front Handspring
by Deaf Cheerleader on 2001-11-29
Hello!
I am having problem .. since I first started the front handspring .. once I start running and then I land .. it like a bridge but how can I put more force up to land myself to the feet?
I mean .. I know I can do it but it easy to do it but I need help on getting my effort into front handspring on accurate landing.
I'm JV Cheerleader and we have two tumbler already and already I become one too .. but I want to have some advice on it so I can do some tumbling in cheer or dance competition .. that would make an effort into some place ..
Thanks
Deaf Cheerleader

Head kip ups
by Anonymous on 2002-01-21
Pushing on ones thighes to get a extra push to do this move is a good way of learning, but a person should be able to produce his or her own power to inniate the motion. This move has a interresting rhythm that I can't explain, but when it feels right thrust your arms up and forward and there you go,the trick is done and it looks more dynamic now. caution if your timing is off you can get a really sore neck, I know it took me a while get the timing, now it's easy for me. another way to learn the timing and the extra push is to practice on top of a bed, this is how my friend figure out this move. Warning do not perform this on a bunk bed

First build up you neck muscles by holding head stands for long periods of time. Next go in to a somersault, right when your shoulders touch the ground do a kip up. This is a good way to first practice. then to do the real thing simply try the kip up motion with a hand spring motion before your shoulders touch.

Head Springs
by Anonymous on 2003-01-18
These are lots of fun to do especially if you can do a string of them at one time. Strong neck muscles are needed. However, at first I used to relieve some of the stress on my head by supporting my upside down body with my hands.

These are easier than a handspring and an neat little alternative to a kipup. i.e. if you're on the ground, turn onto your stomach.. put the top of your head on the ground and support it with your hands... then swing your legs forward as in a front flip, as you push off of your hands and head... if you swing your legs hard enough and push enough with your hands/head, you should be on your feet now.

This move is one of the best i have seen and it looks impossible to do without getting injured.

how to do a headspring
by james on 2003-10-21
first if you can do a kip up u can do a headspring OK!
This trick is mainly to do with the legs and the lower back
to begin learn how to do a headstand using your hands.
remember if u become unbalenced roll out because u can seriously hurt your neck.
after u have learn't 2 balence on your head u can do this from your knees or from standing up.
from standing up u have the problem of banging your head to hard so use your hands to slow the descent
but also from kneeling you might not get enough momentum
start with your head and your hands in an equalateral triangle on the ground for the best balence they should be equal distance apart.
now push forward into the balenced position (u can either wait in this position till u feel comfortable to move on or you can just go straight on)
now just as u would do in a kip up push your arms up and fling your legs over at the same time to give u enough momentum to throw yourself on your feet.
in this the pushing of your arms gives u the lift and the flinging of your legs should throw you the right way up whilst giving you lift.
after a while you should get used to doing this and therefore your legs should give you enough lift so u don't need to use your hands.

Shoulder spring!
by CK on 2003-11-05
Hey I am trying this but end up doing what I would call more of a "Shoulder Spring"!

That is, I can clasp my arms around my back and do several in succession... but i roll slightly over onto my shoulders and THEN spring. Not quite a head spring or a hand spring.. hmmm. Any tips?

I think the problem is in generating the momentum with my legs before the point I have rolled onto my shoulders slightly... I want it to look clean... HEAD, FEET, HEAD, FEET... not HEAD, SHOULDERS, FEET, HEAD, SHOULDERS, FEET!

Thanks
CK

So I've seen how people are like on the ground on their stomachs and they like flip their legs over their heads or something? It's like a bridge, but you're sticking your head through your legs. It seems like you have to be really flexible to do it, so does anyone know how?
