  1. basically a butterfly kick except the body twists one turn with the legs straight.
  2. A common wushu trick, muchlike the butterfly kick, where the body spins, parallel to the ground, with the legs rigid, like in a horse-riding stance. the body makes one horizontal rotation in the air
  3. adding a kick into or out of the twist is common variation. another possibility is landing in the splits after the twist.

This move is commonly reffered to in my Capoeira class as a Rotisserie.

Can anyone help me?
by novilho on 2001-03-12
Now I can do some basic kicks and flips (and in the case of flips, very basic) but I would love to get this move down properly. I can butterfly kick quite high, but when I try to launch the twist I just seem to turn over and crash on my shoulder- which hurts. A lot. I know the twist comes from your torso, not your legs and your legs keep fairly close together (I've worn out my Jet Li and Mark Dacascos movies analyzing that) but I just can't seem to land on that second leg. I can't seem to land at all, really. Anyone got any training methods to help me out?

Mariposa (butterfly twist)
by macaco on 2001-03-13
Try piling several mats on top of each other at about waist height then attempt to land on your knees when you peform the twist towards the top of the pads, you will find that given practice you will actually be landing on your knees in an almost upright position...remove a pad from the top of the stack...and go again still imaging the other pad still there...over time your Mariposa will not only be fast but high as well.....

Or try the twist on to you bed....im serious...if your bed is soft and strong try the twist onto your bed...try getting that rotation before you hit the bed....it'll be fun...and if u hit your shoulder it wont hurt....of course your mom and dad may have something to say about it....

happy training.

Try this:
by Superman on 2001-03-23
When you go into it swing your leg up as hard as you can. And when you do it don't wait untill your sideways and already jumping to do it, get down low and while your still piviting to go into itswing your leg up as hard as you can. Then after you do that try keeping your arms strait and parrallel to you torso when swinging. I hope that helps.

Scared
by Jon on 2001-04-25
I used to almost do Butterfly Twists, and I landed on my knees or back, but it never bothered me. Then, I didn't do it for a while and now I'm really scared to try it again. I don't have access to mats or anything. Any suggestions?

Twists
by Chang on 2001-05-09
Find a local gymnastics gym and try twisting into their pit. Eventually you'll get tired of climbing out of it, and you'll be able to do the move.

Butterfly twist
by Adam on 2001-05-28
I spent like 4 months learning this spin. basically what you have gotta do is kick your first leg up real hard. As soon as you are at the height of your jump throw your back elbow ( the one that faces the ground) over the top one HARD. once you begin twisting hold your legs together tight as you see the ground twist outside round kick it. It will take about 20 or 30 tries to get the twist felling.

Not quite a BTwist
by Novilho on 2001-07-03
Thanks for the tips, guys! But I still have one problem. I can get decent height, but once I start rotating, the second leg comes over like a kick. Like a sort of laid-out 360 (but not as good). Because of this my body opens out too early and I crash- I don't seem to be able to maintain the straight body shape in the twist. I videoed my attempt and I also bend at the waist a bit and kick out my legs. Any ideas how to correct this- I seem to do it automatically?

Getting Over the Fear of Twisting
by =-009-= on 2001-08-16
When I first tried to do this move, I was terrified. I panicked the first time I attempted it. Then, I tried doing it from the side of a pool. I knew the worst would happen is a back slap or belly flop. I did it unsuccessfully there, but I got over the fear of twisting in the air which your body naturally doesn't like. Try doing it into a pool, but still be careful. I can do it now very well.

by Nick on 2001-10-18
Well I can (for the most part) do the butterfly kick. I watched Darth maul do that for ages!!! Aynway, I am now finally learning how he does it so well (after buying the DVD which is MUCH clearer) when he bends down, he launches his first leg almost str8 up to get alot of force then follows through with it. Then I watched him do the butterfly twist (from a standing position I might add) and he did the same thing but somehow threw the twist in there quickly. So basically I am asking am I right in thinking that you are supposed to throw the first leg up hard (almost vertically) first to get the momentum? thanks and E-mail me if you can help me!!!

i think i can pretty much do it correct technically, but how does one get so much height? on video i've seen, people are about head-level when twisting, the best i seem to do is waist level. any tricks?

Can't twist!
by JrrDude on 2002-02-02
I've beem trying this move for a week now, and I always land on by back. I've
tried doing it on the bed with no better results. The weird thing is if I run at the bed, jump, land on my knees and bounce, I can twist it perfectly? Any tips?

How to get big air
by Jason on 2002-06-06
The mistake most people make is they let their body get out in front of their lead leg and so when you push out of your leg it shoots you strait forward instead of up, what you want to do is extend your lead leg so its out in front of you and swing your body and arms down and around towards your lead leg and then upwards right as your getting over your lead leg and kick up with your rear leg while your swinging up with your body and arms and then twist last. dont twist before you jump or you wont get a good push out of your jumping leg(lead leg).

something different
by Jason on 2002-06-06
If you already have this trick down and want to challeng yourself try inverting it. so you will end up twisting upside down(feet over head)instead of the normal way(feet and head at the same level)

Need a little help here...
by Luke Skywalker on 2002-06-06
Hey guys, I've been working on this for like 3 or 4 months and I still can't get it. I can do a decent butterfly kick but for some reason I just can't do the twisting part.

The thing is, I feel like I'm going to go upside down when I duck and I end up not going sideways. I don't fall, but I can't for myself to go sideways. IT'S NOT NATURAL lol.

Oh and one more thing. I can do a PERFECT twist onto my bed. I even end up stepping out so I'm about to land it but I just can't on the ground.

Any suggestions? tips?

i been taking wushu for almost 2 years now and i can get pretty good air on my butterfly...and can kick pretty can while i am in the air...anyway...the important thing to know to do a butterfly twist is to get good air when you do butterfly..

at first when i first wanted to try b twist but was very scared...so i went to a gym and did on pile of mats...so that when i crash i dont break my bonesor whatever...anyway it took me about 15 minutes or so to land a twist...yeah its true lol

my friend wasnt able to do it beacuse he does a crappy butterfly...so get enough air when you do butterfly and when you re confident try the twist...wont take long trust me...and one more thing...try twisting vertically first...that way you will get used to the dizzyness...

if you can spin two times in the air vertically from just jumping from the spot...it will help alot while doing twist...

Thanks but...
by Luke Skywalker on 2002-06-07
Thanks but one more thing. how do I get lots of air on the kick? Any tips?

Oh btw, I've been in gymnastics for like a year and a half so dizziness isn't a problem. :)

any tips
by cody on 2002-06-15
i've been working on the butterfly twist, back hand spring, and back flip for a while now and i still can't get them does any body have any tips so that i can land them. if so please e-mail me. thanks.

Hey Cody...
by Luke Skywalker on 2002-06-17
Here's a few tips. When you go into your backhandspring, try to go as far back as you can. Practice it on a trampoline if you have access to one. try sitting down like you rgonna sit in a chair, then wheln you lose your balance, jump straight back really hard.

Back Tuck.
The important thing on a back tuck is to jump straight up BEFORE you pull your knees over. Try just doing a normal stretch jump as a warm up. Then just do a stretch jump and pull your knees over. Picture someone behind you that you want to kick. That helps me get over.

I still can't get the butterfly twist so I can't help you there.

I take Songahm Taekwondo in the ATA and you don't see a lot of the flashier techniques that you do in other styles. Where should I begin when learning to do this technique?

. . . .
by bboy neodi (FSC) on 2002-06-22
You guys are making this kick seem alot harder than it really is. LOL. Of course that is coming from a breakdancer and a former gymnast. Hmm...what can I tell you guys about this?
Get a good takeoff...swing your body around once and then go like a butterfly kick(you probably already know that part but i thought i'd tell you anyway).
At the end of your takeoff dip your upper boddy downward and throw your kicking leg upward. This move IS more from the legs NOT the torso. after you've started a butterfly try to swing your kicking leg over your back leg. This will cause the twist.
The hardest part of this move is landing it, once you have twisted wing your legs out as if you were still doing a regular butterfly. Good luck

butterfly twist
by Anonymous on 2002-06-25
The most important part is to get to the apex (highest point) of your jump before you begin to twist it sounds crazy but if you jump and twist rigt away not waiting for the apex as you twist you will not go any higher so jump up high and spin on the way down. I am telling you this is what works!

very cool
by kyle on 2002-07-11
This move is very fun to play around with, if your looking for a new trick to learn I suggest u learn this one. Its very easy after you have done it a few times.

by zs on 2002-07-12
i can do the butterfly twist..usually.lol. well lets see, i twist really fast but i'm never level!!!!!and i try to wip up my 1st leg but.. but... like 80% of the time i'm off. is there sumthing to do with my upper body??

b-twist
by kyle on 2002-07-15
im not an expert or anything but here is what i do with my upper body; bend really low to the ground and in a smooth quick motion thrust your upper body up and twist hard, try to get as much momentum as possibly with your arms. and make sure u try and get that back leg off the ground first before twisting in the air, gives u much more hieght. hope this helps

b-twist
by kapten on 2002-08-07
I practise wushu, and I dont know why some of you say you should not begin twisting until you reach your peak.. I would say, stop twisting when you reach the peak of the jump.

by kc on 2002-08-17
man i can't get parallel with the ground. i am always at a 45 degree angle and with little height. how do you guys get more height and horizontalness?

by intotheblue on 2002-08-22
this trick always looks so kool and everything in jet li's CHINESE movies and stuff, and i'd like to learn how to execute this move, but once i try for 5 minutes, it seems to me like i have no hope. can someone give me tips or a SIMPLE writing of directions. thanks for your time....and name the replay re: is this worth the time? ....

thx again~!

I Finally Got It.
by Michael Kim on 2002-08-23
I've been practicing this move for about half a year now (I've only been in martial arts itself for about that long), and I recently managed to start landing them without any terrible effort or sloppiness. Now, I land cleanly and without stumbling, and I have good height and posture, and I think I know why, which may help anyone else who is in his/her last stages of landing the move well.

Basically, I used to tilt too much (almost inverted when twisting) and I'd always go too low and end up landing on my knees (or not at all). I twisted my ankle, took about three months off, and then began strengthening my legs through conventional weights. After those three months, I tried again (This is about two days ago), and I landed it perfectly. After a bit of tweaking, I was landing without the slightest sense of disorientation. I believe that one of the biggest factors in getting height is having a strong jumping leg. For me, that's my left leg.

You really, really have to "pump" that jumping leg, because that's what will give you your big air time. NOTE: do not try to use your non-jumping leg as a means of getting height. Pulling with it away from the body will just take emphasis away from your jumping leg, which will detract from your air time. Also, do not dip too far when preparing to lift off. I hardly dip at all, and my legs swing up to make me parallel in mid-air, so don't think that dipping is horribly important to getting height. In fact, if you force your body to become perpendicular to the ground before jumping, your "jumping leg" will have to push up more weight than if you were at a nice 45 degree angle.

If anyone has any big questions, I'm open to give tips. I'm far from perfection, but I have been practicing this for a while, and I've personally encountered almost all of the problems a lot of people have been mentioning.

Good luck, regardless.

Conventional Problems
by Team S2R on 2002-08-25
Okay well i (Ayan of S2R) [http://s2r.has.it] have been doing this for quite sometime now. I honestly believe i have encountered MOST of the problems with this technique. Let me share my insight =p

1. NEVER DIP DOWN TOO LOW. If you dip down (past your hip level when you are about to take off[this is generally somewhat of a horse stance) too low, you will throw all your body weight to the side and you will possibly 'torpedo' yourself rather than btwist.

2. KICK YOUR LEG STRAIGHT UP
Okay say you are facing a wall, and you are doing the move to your direct left. When you take off, your leg should be parallel with the wall. THIS IS WHERE YOU KICK straight up. You will find it a lot easier (to me). Then When you kick up, you dip to the side like a bkick and then begin to spin (at max height of course). I think if you torque ur neck (plz be careful) and ur elbow and bring your feet together, you should be fine for the landing.

3. THE LANDING. This is the hardest part of the trick! Honestly if you have a good bkick, you can do everything before this, but the landing is a lot different. So... whats the best for the landing? Well when you torque ur head and elbo with the spin (be careful) you see the ground a lot sooner then u can land. So what you have to do is develop an 'air sense'. That is when you see the ground, keep watching it and then when ur body follows along the spin, open up! You will have a lot of time when you try to open up because you should be pretty close to landing. If you over spin its all good here...

4. Tips...
Well actually I found a tip (that i use now) that helps me jump higher. Okay pretend you are facing a wall. You are going to do the twist to your left. When you take off, your left leg is on the ground while u are lookin down at it right? Well The placing of that foot really matters. For example: say you have it 45 degrees to the front (straight with bod, and left axis), Your foot will resist your jump if you dont jump straight up. Most people want to make it 1 motion so they throw their leg up too :p (yes do that) SO... for me what helps is if i put my left foot 45 degrees the OPPOSITE waY (behind you, and the left axis). This way you are no longer resisting ajump and you are going with it. The one set back is the difficulty to get perfectly horizontal. Well really all you have to do is offset your jump and your kick. If they are relatively equal you can get horizontal. You can even get horizontal by a little dip control in the air too.

Well thats all for me, you can come to my site and check out my btwist tutorial. Some of this is there and some of it isnt =p. Later

Ayan

Okay a teammate told me that my tutorial makes no sense (#4)
by Team S2R on 2002-08-25
Well I will fix #4 right now....

Let us draw a person okay?
the person will be the circle

^facing this way
left ----- O ------ right

So, this person is going to do the btwist to his left. SO HE PLACES HIS FOOT at a 45 DEGREE ANGLE.

45 ^
^
--- o ---

This person at this angle is resisting his jump. Since most people do jump to the side and up (due to fact of their leg going around the side). If they moved their foot so it is

^
^
--- o ---
|
45 |

and allow their body to pivot on that foot, they will have little resistence and get their jump off. They will have ample time to dip and spin.

b twist so easy

yo wass up i find the b twist kinda easy!!if vyou got the lead up down there isnt much to it!!!once you are in the air (at the peak off ur jump}just look over ur shoulder at the jump than ur body will follow automaticly!!

butterfly
by kapten on 2002-09-08
Just practise your butterfly-kick over and over until you feel that you really are floating and almost having trouble getting back to the ground :) then all you need to do is add the twist. Trust me. You will land smooth and it will look good.. I learned btwist in one attempt after doing butterflys for 6 months.

big tips for the big twist
by Anonymous on 2002-11-16
hey, I have been twisting for not a long time but I find getting horizontal is just a matter of practicing your twist, no special technique, eventually you will level out.
However I have a problem that i need to work the kinks out, I wonder why ,my butterfly kick is pretty damn high but when i twist my right leg is getting like knee high i don't know whats up with that, anyway twisting is not my problem it is getting the hight for the twist, any suggestions?

i think...
by kuchu on 2002-12-30
i think the reason, people can do the twists perfectly onto beds and stuff is because they have no fear of falling or hitting anything. so i think if you go to a gym and line up some mats and then try, you could probably do it... i haven't tried so i don't know, just merely a suggestion ^_^ I too can do it onto a bed perfectly, but too scared to do it on ground... lol. I will MASTER! O_o

by jay on 2003-01-13
i cant quite do this move yet but thats probally because i dont pratice enough but back when i was in was still taking wushu classes my teacher had us take running starts at at stack of pads not to land on but to jump over and that was the first time i really tried it and i was so close so anyone trying this i would suggest having a object to try jumping over to motivaye yourself into getting the height you need for the proper twist good luck i will be trying too

Twisting
by Muitako on 2003-01-28
I don't profess to be brilliant at this move, I can usually land it though. I find that it helps to be in a gym or field. The first place I pulled it was at my gymnastics centre, on the sprung floor. Well back to the point. I find it easiest to figure out which way you are going to spin. I usually go for a take off my left foot.

On the run up, I will take a couple of steps onto my left foot. then hop over to my right foot and swing my left leg round behind me, turning through 180 and plonking it a step after my right leg.

L *hop* R L
\ /
\_____>__>____/

Something like that. anyway, if you get what I mean there as your left legtouches the ground I duck my torso down to about 90 from the ground and sag at the knees a little. continuing the turn as I kick my righ foot up and keeping my torso low I start the same as I would a butterfly kick.

I find the easiest way to twist is as you are pushing with your left leg, to think about as soon as its off the ground to snap it up alongside your right leg getting your entire body into a straight a line as possible. after you see the ceiling/sky go past I swing my right leg out and then bring it down followed by my left leg. this slowls you down andlets you land.

I can't emphasise enought that you practise butterfly kicks with as much height as you can first. because you are going to need the power you get from the height to kick you up into the twist.

double post, sorry :(

Butterfly Twist
by Patrick on 2003-03-14
Hi there ive just lately started doing the Twist and altho much has been discussed already i think maybe its just worth saying what method worked best for me, i tried many times and found i was too scared to spin over.. often just making a U shape with my body and then spinning while standing at the last minute. I went thru the motions of a butterfly kick slowly and got used to hopping upwar after the U form and then on one attempt thru my shoulders over..and altho crashing out completely on a gym floor (the adrenalin pumped in so i was fine :) i tried this again a few times and crashed out each time but i had the worry of rotating out of my mind.. i then tried at a local park and managed to land feet first every time.. maybe not trying to go fully horizontal but get the spin and get used to the landing.. im confident now but i need to get the back leg higher. Trying it tonight in fact so im hoping to come back with something better.. Just something i found very important to me tho ... twist the shoulders and the legs will follow naturally..ive tried other ways but they arn't true methods.. i guess for landing.. u need to kick off as much as u can ( although i dont kick of too well) and make the spin fast and tight.. snappy perhaps.. i tried flowing over but i spun too slowly for my legs to get underneath and i landed on my side.

i havent tried it just yet but i think maybe the U shape u motion ur body thru should be tighter so u dip down quickly and then raise upward faster..giving more height, so ur body is really swinging up wards so not al lthe effort is on the leg pushing off.. i love this move but im going to try this later.. hopefully ill come abck with some improvement.. oh and also if u can its worth recording urself on video.. its helped me ALOT..

not high enough
by yeahman5000 on 2003-03-19
yeah i thought that i had a butterfly twist down for a while but then i got it on tape and was dissapointed that i was not horizontal. my friend is past horizontal and it loos real nice. ne suggestions.

horizontal
by Patrick on 2003-03-21
i know what u mean and i spent ages tryoing to match my leg height to my upper body..i also have a friend who gets fairly horizontal but looking back on videos its simply because he throws legs high and upper body is only around a foot and a half high, looking at my own i was thinking i need to get my legs higher but really my legs are fine its just the torso is too high, also if u want to continue thru a routine u want to come out of the twist in a fairly upright positon rather than being horizontal, in wushu anyway..

Air, Spinning, and Landing
by Unknown on 2003-04-04
Okay. Crap. I can get the starting position down pretty well. But then I'd end up doing a messed up butterfly kick. I've done it into a pool. Yeah, it hurt, but I dealt with it. I looked back on a video, looks like I just spinned and fell into the pool. So I need help spinning, the air...and I have no clue on how to land. Nor can I keep my legs straight enough...and I'm slanted when I jump. If I fall and spin. It's horizontal. Suggestions, places where I can practice...anything would be great. Thanx.

twisting
by hateshino on 2003-04-10
when you jump, dont immediatly twist. if you do, you will stop gaining air. learn to "pause", and when your at your highest point in the jump, then use ur hsoulders to turn over. its frky, but jutst think youll land on your feet. pschy urslef out!

hehe, btw...
by hateshino on 2003-04-10
yea, btw, twisting is same as spinning, just in case =)

twist/turn/spin...
by patrick on 2003-04-13
although all sounding like the same thing, i think trying to spin & twist was where i went wrong at first, just gain some height, *pause" as hateshino said, and then turn ur shoulders over quickly, rather than trying to spin ur body in circles, this works best for me.

Twist Videos on the net???

Dubble B-twist
by Bonzo on 2003-04-14
I'm just starting to get a grip of the twist but haven't yet figured out the landing. But I'm not going to ask you for this cause I've already found alot of information in this forum. The thing I want to ask is: What do you call a butterfly with a "dubble twist", and how do you learn it?!
Thanx!

. . . .
by DRUNKEN MASTER on 2003-04-15
You call it double b twist just like you said. And you need much hight and speed to do it. But just learn the normal b twist or you will never get the double.

hey i havent been trick'n 4 long...but i am gettin the hang of it. right now i am stuck on btwists. my problem is that i over rotate and do 2 twists. i cant help it!! and wen i do it i have no idea wha tis goin on!!! no focus!! and i just land on me face. can some 1 lz help me with the landing as i cant seen 2 grip it..thatnks heeps!

trampoline
by sizzlemaster on 2003-04-19
doing it on a trampoline is nice, only its hard to get good balance and momentum. but if u can do it on a trampoline, chances are those two things won't be a problem when doing it on solid grounds.

Butterfly twist
by Leo on 2003-04-23
I think that a lot of the problems people have with this move is getting the throwing leg in the air. This technique leads to a diagonal twist which is harder than normal. Imagine an aerial, set the move up like a butterfly kick and when your about to go into it throw your back leg up like an aerial, and whip the twist. This gives you loadsa height, just remember to lift your chest at the same time or you will land with a low head.

2 twists -> 1 twist?
by Anonymous on 2003-05-14
if you are twisting too much, that should be easy to correct. Practice twisting while standing. Memorize exactly how far once around is. You can also practice jumping straight up, then twisting around exactly once.

If you can twist twice before hitting the floor, you should have plenty of time to twist once and land.

Butterfly twist
by Mike on 2003-07-25
What I find works well, is throw a Butterfly kick into a Butterfly twist. So do a butterfly kick and as you land throw the Butterfly twist, this will give you the momentum to do the full twist.
Good Luck.

btwist instruction
by ben on 2003-08-07
JESUS, seems like everybody has very different advice for this move, probably cause people do it a little different and because different things work for each person, wow. Well I taught a couple of people to do it in one night, and in my capoeira class only three other people can do one, and the 4 of us agree on everything I'm about to say so here it goes. Keep in mind that we usually do it from the jogo, so no running starts for ANY of our moves, be they arials, front flips, backhandsprings, or butterflies, butterfly twists, etc. stand normally. I agree the closest move to the twist is the normal butterfly but there are still some HUGE differences. Also, there is the combat effective swinging butterfly kick, and then there's the graceful one that goes straight up almost, you back bows and you FLOAT on the air for a LONG time. At first only I could do this one which is why I got the twist first. Unlike the butterfly kick you can't spread your legs apart very far, they should be around shoulder width and you should try to avoid the SWING of a normal butterfly they takes you off to the side. My twists don't land TOO far from where I start. There's a move in Tekken 3 called the fire kick, if any of you have done that move, which I LOVE to do all the time, you know how to start this move. do NOT try to bend at the waist and swing your head to the right like usual. Bend at the knees like you wanna do a freaking slam dunk. Jump as hard and high as you can, almost straight up like for a backflip or front flip, but IMMEDIATELY after you leave the ground, throw those legs to what you thing is waist height in the direction you were facing and swing your arms like all hell down and to the right. Turn your head as hard as you can to look over your right shoulder. Your head is now behind where you were standing, make sure as you swing your arms their go from sticking way out to being pulled to the body like an ice skater and at the end, bend the legs a little so you can land. If you do it right you will spin so hard and so fast you won't have TIME to over think things and screw yourself up. At least try to get all the way around and land on all fours at first. The main trick to getting this is being able to do a bkick but ALSO knowing the important difference in the way you jump. it is ALL about HEIGHT. Get HIGH, not FAR, don't try to cover any distance. One last note, all 4 of us also noticed this. When you first land it, it will NOT have FELT HORIZONTAL. All 4 of us to this day after 6 months of doing twists never feel horizontal. We all pulled off the twist about a dozen times before realizing we had done it because only another person could tell us we were horizontal. The better we do them the more wrong it feels. I try to get less horizontal and I end up getting MORE horizontal. If you have the height and the torque, you'll do it 10 times and be like DAMMIT, why can't I get horizontal? And then a friend will say dude, you've been doing them horizontal, this whole time. Happened with all 4 of us and our Mestre. Always practice with someone who can watch, critique, and tell you when you get it!

My funky landing
by Chuck on 2003-09-09
I can't stick the landing for some reason. I go up, do the spin, spot the ground, but as I come for the landing, I land on my landing leg (left leg) but my momentum causes me to sit down on my butt, with my other leg swinging out in front of me. Essentially I end up in a sitting position, butt on floor, torso upright, left leg tucked in, right leg out in front of me. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any tips?

stunt training courses
by Nick on 2003-10-06
Hi i love what you are doing with martial arts, and i would love to be a part of it, my interests are ninjutsu and capoera, i have some friends in spain who used to practice capoera, and i learned some simple manovers, but since then i have not been able to activeley take part in martial arts acrobatics. i know the london school of capoeira charges 25 pounds per session. there was recently a programme on free running where some french guys ran along the rooftops jackie chan style, now there are groups starting to train. i think martial arts is not meeting the extreme market to its potential. workshops are hard to find. Combat our best m,a. magazine only offers one annual stunt course. And Birmingham being the new international arena, would be a great location to set up a stunt course. with the National exhibition centre and the national indoor arena being in town offering concerts and exhibitions, such as the shao lin monks, which by the way sold out. give it a go. contact Combat magazine based in Aldridge my home town. 135 Aldridge road,

How much is enough air?
by Dejavu on 2003-10-26
I've got a decent butterfly. Yet I hear that you need to get a decent air on your butterfly before you can attempt the buttefly twist. My butterfly is about 4 feet off the ground. Is that enough?

knowing when to twist
by Anonymous on 2003-11-01
many people mentioned jumping up and getting at your highest point then twisting. I was wondering what position are u in when u jump. like....u get really low and then u jump up off the ground. should your body be vertical and then u try to twist horizontally or do u jump when you body is semi-horizontal and try to get a lot of height off of that?

Just got it.
by Ken on 2004-02-05
Well I finally got my butterfly twist (barrel ro ll, whatever you people want to call it) and here' s my experience:

Don't expect to get the move down even when you think you're doing the setup co rrectly. I did a ton of reading before trying the t rick, asked the opinion of people who could do B-t wist. What I learned was basically "Wind up, crea te a U motion with your body and then kick your righ t leg as though it were a butterfly kick. As you do t hat about half a second after your leading foot le aves the ground, throw the shoulders for spin."

Now I did all of that at first but for some reaso n my body just wouldn't go. Either my legs would bo th throw over, or I'd wuss out or something like th at. So I started thinking maybe the move is imposs ible for me.

For those out there that are tryi ng to learn this now, I say right now, persistence is key. The whole process is mostly just tuning yo ur body to getting used to spinning horizontally . Definitely practice a lot and yes you probably w ill take many crashes...but if you work hard enou gh I can say with a great certainty that when you go to sleep and wake up the next morning you'll be at l east a little bit closer to the twist than you were the next day.

So with that said, good luck to t hose trying to learn this trick! It's fun as all he ll once you get it!

Bailing
by CM on 2004-02-10
I read a lot of talk about not wanting to hurt your self when doing this, but if you've got a grassy ar ea nearby that's all you need. I started learning it in my front yard a week ago at night (when no one c ould watch me mess up =) and had no trouble bailing . It was scary, but as long as you can picture what y ou need to do, i do'nt see how you'll hurt yourself

Butterfly twist (Maripose, Au parafuso)
by Arroz (Feijao com Arroz) on 2004-03-03
Dont think if you do the butterfly twist, just do it, follow the instructions givin here. Have con fidence, why couldnt you do it, if everybody who t ries it can ??. A setup works before getting into t he butterfly (it didnt for me, but to all others it did) So kick your first leg as high as you can, when it reaches his height, jump as hard as you can with your other leg, when getting your second leg to yo ur first leg let your elbows turn to the same side ( like both turning left or right: depends on wich s ide you wanna spin to) and spin, dont stop in the ai r keep in mind, i need to land on my feet (if you cant land on your feet, land on your knees and hands aft er that keep trying). Good luck

Trouble Twisting?
by Chris Lockett on 2004-03-22
Some people have trouble twisting and then gett ing around quick enough to land. Here's what I do, stack some mats or get your self higher than where you will land. Practice jumping off and twisting . you might land on your hands and knees a couple ti mes(like me) but as you get used to twisting your l egs will come around easier making landing a piec e of cake.

Peace out, Chris

this move is quite simple. There are two steps:
1. Kick the first leg (right leg)as if you are goi ng into a butterfly. this will give you hight.
2 . When your kick back has reached its hight, bring your other leg up and sortof klick your feet toget her and hold it...this will give you the spin.
