ok rock onto your shoulders to get the momentom and as you start to rock forwards kick your legs diagonally into the air.if you do this properly you shouldnt even have to use your hands but if you are still having difficulty place your hands by the side of your head and do exactly as i said above but this time when you kick your legs push with your hands aswell. It doesnt matter how much you weigh aslong as you have the technique down.

Try to use your upper back a little more and push off when you kick out your feet. and as soon as you do this then jsut keep practicing. you will find that your getting closer and closer with mroe practice until eventually you get it. Once you get it, it is so easy. you wonder why you couldn't do it before

you can also use your head to push off
the ground, this gives you extra power

re: kip up help.
by Anonymous on 2001-08-11
you can do it on a bed but not anything hard then.. umm u just hve to kinda get used to different surfaces.. when i furst started i would do them on the bed and on trampoilines but i realized i can do it so easy because the ground gives in and it helps you.. so you just have to practice on hard surfaces.

don't worry
by kipmasta on 2001-08-17
I think the trick is that when you bring your legs back, keep them straight, not bent. Bring them back as far as you can, and then, without stopping, swing them up AND foward as fast as you can. Push with your hands and try to bring your upper body with the rest of your body. Land in a crouching position or more upright if you can. After your legs get all the way back, your ass and hips should be slightly off the ground and shouldn't touch the ground again. Email if you need help.

Kip ups
by Anonymous on 2001-09-02
Some tips that helped me do them.(5'9 150)
1 Get your feet as far back as you can.(Under your rear)
2 Try to land on the balls of your feet.(It lets you position your feet even farther back if you do this.)
3 Try to get your knees as far forward as you can.

Seriously, doing those things let me do them.(Although sometimes I over shoot and land in a kneeling position. Still it's much easier that way.) Just keep trying and you'll get it eventually.(It took me 2 years but then again I'm probably too old at 30.)

Try and incorporate ur neck as well. When going up use ur neck 2 kind of spring. On the first few ateempts ur neck will b a bit sore a couple of days after but it's a lot easier if u use ur neck

Rubber BAnds
by James on 2001-11-19
People, this is about rubber bands, not just a kip up. Rubber bands are executed by continually doing kip ups. To start off, do a regular kip. While you are on your feet, jump back, and reach back, arms outstretched. Don't keep your arms bent, otherwise you'll land hard on your back. Also, try to keep your head craned towards your stomach. The arms should lessen the impact of the back hitting the floor, thus letting you perform another kip.

tips
by Chaos on 2001-12-28
the main things to remember are:

1. when you rock back, try to get up on your upper back so only your shoulders and head are touching.
2. kick up and forward, at around a 45 degree angle or a little greater.
3. kick hard
4 in the same motion, try to make your feet go back to where your ass just was... if you do this properly, your hands aren't needed.

Reply to "HELP!!!" from Anonymous - I can't do it yet, but the muscles you want to build up would be thigh (for kicking) and triceps (for pushing)

Kipup
by Anonymous on 2002-01-14
I find, that if you try and maintain a straight back, and tense your back and stomach muscles as you perform the move. As an exercise, I find doing squats (20 reps), stomach cruches(50 reps) and cobra pushups(30 reps) really helps you condition for this. Also kick down to where your arse was, not forwards! The more circular your leg movements the better.

Kip ups
by enkontrol on 2002-01-14
To mr.taewkondo - I know very very few martial artists who can do kip-ups properly. one in fact, but I know many bboys. Basically a kip-up is all about technique. you don't even need hands when your technique is right.

Basically do this:
1. Roll back onto your upper neck/hands, trying to almost touch the floor behind your head with your feet (dont worry if they go nowhere near the floor) - outstretched and relaxed. your back should not be in contact with the floor.

2. now roll forward a little and pull/swing your lower legs over, basically so that your knees are still very close to your chest, but your knees are really bent (no-longer straight) - i.e. your feet are nearer your butt now. You are now coiled like a spring.

3. shoot/thrust your legs forward - like your were doing a double kick - to full extension (or close - full might cripple you if you do it too much). Whats very important here is that you shoot them at a 45 degree angle to the ground. 45 degrees is pretty much exact. higher and you'll spring into the air and just land on your upper back. lower and you wont get the required lift. When you shoot your legs out your shoulders should be like a pivot and the line from your shoulders to the base of your spine should make a 45 degree angle with the ground.

Lastly, practice and practice and practice, over and over. You'll get it in a week if you practice enough.

Read over this till you understand each step fully, and understand what I mean.

I've got the motion down kind of, but when I go to pull my legs under me, I slide backwards. I was doing them last night and I marked where I started from, I kept sliding backwards. I 214 lbs and 6 feet tall. Any hints?

my technique
by johnny on 2002-02-02
I find that the best way to land on your feet is to try and bring your legs as inward as possible after kicking out so that my feet are now where my butt used to be... along with pushing forward with force and arching your back, you should get it eventiually. If there is a better, more effective way.. please e-mail me or post your comment here, please.

Kip Ups
by Fone Booth on 2002-06-05
Oky doky, so u wanna do kip-ups. it took me bout 2-3 months to get it down pretty well so dont give up if u dont get it on ur first couple-a-goes. Firstly, u wanna be in the correct position to launch so u get more height and better, cleaner landings. i find arching my back helps so that all that's touching the floor is ur head, butt and feet. ur hands will be behind ur shoulders, palms on floor, fingers pointing towards body. pull ur knees towards ur face (up2 u whether ur legs are bent or straight) so that u are on ur head and tops of the shoulders. now the gutsy bit. launch ur legs FROM THE HIPS, throw them up and out and push hard with ur arms. as ur lags start to fall, tuck them in towards ur butt.
That shud be pretty much it. u can throw ur arms out after pushing to throw ur body forwards but that's all. soz this is a long explanation! it's difficult to make a full one short. e-mail me if u want sum info. --Fone Booth--

Pushing off with hands

SO EASY
by Anonymous on 2002-08-19
I was doing this for 3 days and finally I got it. U have to kick straight up hard, push off with your hands( I dont think this makes a difference as 10 mins later I tried a no-handed kip up and pulled it off, arch your back in the air and land on the balls of your feet right under where yor arse was. It is even better if you download the video from the site trickstutorials.com

Practice

Try different surfaces
by Anonymous on 2002-09-16
Took me about 1.5 weeks to get down, but what worked best for me was starting on a soft surface first. I started out by using my bed. It didn't take too long to get it down easily because of the soft springy surface. By starting there it wasn't painful and above all it helps you get the motion down quickly. Then I worked on it on a harder surface, the grass, and got it down. By starting soft then trying harder surfaces, you develop technique and it makes learning more efficient. GOOD LUCK!!! P.S. It doesn't matter how you place your hands as long as you can push with them. my fingers were facing away from my body and I found this to be the most comfortable. So try new things!!

kip
by shinobi on 2002-09-20
i worked a long time and i finally got it. The muscles to work on are definitly the stomach. Its all in the stomach. Use your hands to help push and use your momentum. Of course it was pretty easy for me since im 5,5 and less then 100 ha im skinny. MAny people i know do it with the fingers out streched when they push but i like pushing with my fist. Good luck

Neck Muscles for the Kipup
by The Apostle on 2002-10-14
I noticed alot of people in here are having problems with pulling or hurting thier neck muscles. Here are a few exercises to strengthen them but of corse you must streatch them before doing a kip up at all.

1) Lay flat on your back, bend your knees, and pick your body up with your neck. When you first do this I would reccomend you only do a max of 5, or you will pull something, unless you have done this before. You will also feel pressure on your head and may even make you dizzy, but it will go away.

2) Lying in the same position, streatch out your legs and relax. Now, using your neck alone, lift your head up and slowly decline your head down. This will be more like a push up for your neck. I also do a variation on looking side to side also. Note that your shoulders shouldn't touch the floor at all.

These exercises I learned when I wrestled, and of corse in wrestling you get hurt more in your neck than anywhere else, usually. But I haven't yet, so I guess the lord is with me there. Hope I helped someone. If there are any questions or comments, e-mail me.

Gymnastics
by Invisible Shadow on 2002-10-29
Anybody who wants to look totally bad-@ss should do this move without useing their hands to push off the ground. It's a whole lot harder, and requires more speed than strength. I've gotten so used to doing it this way, that if I use my hands, I over-rotate and miss my feet to fall on my face. I'm trying to see if I can pull my body around (feet never touching the ground) and land hands first, then forward roll out.

Kip Up
by Karim Sirsy on 2002-11-01
I got this move about a week ago. It is very impressive, even for a beginner move... I did this in school and I had crowds... They loved me... But anyways, one should learn this move with pressure... always. See, I got the move in the same day I started to practice. The next day, I couldn't do it. If you have someone watching you, you do it with 100% effort. Even if I try it by myself, I barely used to get it. So learn it by friends, do it by friends, and if you somehow forget how to do it, like when i just stopped doing it for some reason and how hard i tried i couldn't get it back, try it on a bed to get the motion.peace

invisable shadow... to do the forward roll out is hard but possible, the first time i did it i rolled onto a 1/2 inch mat... you should consider the same or at least onto grass... also, you can do it on the trampoline by doing a small backdrop first(no bounce, just fall flat on your back) after that, if u wanna feel ballsey; try a backdrop double front... its crazy and fun... just make sure u have a spotter if there's any possibility of falling onto something hard if u stumble off the tramp.

Back Drop on tramp
by Invisible Shadow on 2002-11-06
When I was in competition, favorite move was a front one and 3/4's (a forward roll, but with an entire flip before the roll. I learned that on tramp from a standing back drop. My coach was totally paranoid about me rotation being to slow, so he made me do it from standing still, jump up to my back, then double front out.

P.S. Is there a place for vids on here, cause I have a cool one of my front 1&3/4...

I DID IT
by Chris on 2002-11-11
I have mastered kip ups and its really cool. The most important thing I think of is to spring up as fast as I can. I have lifted weights and gotten myself inshape which has also helped. Keep practicing.

by ealvintan on 2002-12-04
kip-ups are simple stuff... just use ALL the energy you have, roll your knees at least to your face. then concentrate on planting your feet to the floor not springing them into the sky. as far as i know, weight doesn't influence your potential at doing this move. im 5' 4" and 150 pounds. bite me.

day 2
by Dark Shadow on 2002-12-04
i have a sore back this morning. no joy with the kip up last nite. i really hope that weight isn't that important as i'm 6ft 3ins and about 16.5 stone (231 pounds). however i do work out a good bit. I just seemed to keep landing on my back. Any tips?

butt
by gamecore.nl on 2002-12-07

im 6'2" 210lb i work on it for 3 months and was geting only about as far as you. then one day i just did it an know iv been doing them for about 5 months and can even do them with out hands. so just take in every bit of advice you can and keep trying.

Focus
by Dev on 2002-12-17
The key to doing this trick is to focus your body into moving the way that you want it. If you start by coiling yourslef up on the floor, rocking backwards, but not actually doing it, it gives you some perspective.
Try to imagine throwing yourself upwards and forwards, pushing your feet down onto the floor and letting the rest of your body follow in a snake-like motion. Then use your abdominals pull the body vertically standing.
The hardest part of this is to regain balance after standing. I overcome this by landing my feet like \/ rather than straight forwards.

still trying
by hurts on 2002-12-26
i've been trying to do this move for 3 weeks now. Everyday when I train I give it a try for at least a good 30 mins. Without fail, I'll land on my back. I've used every tip here. Rolling onto my shoulders and using my hands to push up while kicking as hard as I can in the air and bringing to where my butt is... i'll still land flat on my back. :(

knees
by Anonymous on 2002-12-29
I can do kip ups fine, but I land flat on my feet, not on the balls of my feet like Jackie Chan does it. I recently hurt by left knee by pulling it while doing kip ups. I think it's because I land flat and it pulls my knee, is this true? How do you land on the balls of your feet?

Kip up - my method
by Hassan on 2003-01-01
I'd been trying kipups for a while before i got themn down. Do not try to kick as hard as possible. With hands this movement does not require a lot of power.

Summary
Roll your legs back, move them straight up, push with your hands, arch your back, control the movement from your waist.

1. Start by lying flat on yer back with your hands plantedby your head on the floor.

2. Bring your legs as close to your head as possible and push them straight up. This should be one quick movment but do not try to force this movement.

3. The momentum comes from your hands. Push as hard as possible. do movements 2 and 3 at the same time.

4. arch your back in this movement so that your feet will go to the floor.

Gaining Ground
by Anonymous on 2003-01-18
I just got these tonight after a few days of effort. I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs. I just concentrated on making my legs move in as circular a motion as possible and pushing off with my hands right before my upper body would leave the ground. I still can't do them with much consistency, since I think I tired myself out with all the failed attempts. Still, getting a few tonight is enough motivation for me to perfect them later.

help with continuous kip ups
by LJX on 2003-01-24
I need help with the continuous kip ups. I can do a kip up and no handed kip up with ease. With the continuous kip ups I always land too flat to kip up again. I guess I should keep my arms straight back to make it a lighter fall. But I have seen it done with no hands. I can't do it at all anyway. I guess I don't know the right technique to land ready for a kip up right away. I would like to get that going fast, down and right back up. I need someone to explain it in greater detail so i can learn easier. email...

Alright Everybody, Listen Up!
by Wise Fool on 2003-02-06
Alright my little ones, trust me. Witht the kip up what you gotta do is explode your legs as straight up as possible. Imagine you're kicking the ceiling. Now, the real secret to this manuever is that when you kick up, wait until you get the feeling that you're legs are up in the air. They will have a weightless feeling to them, and this should be about a half second after you kick up. So kick absolutely straight up, wait half a second, let your legs float a little, and then just push hard and snap your damn legs in a curve towards where your ass was on the floor. Main thing, don't worry, you'll definitely get it. I'm lazy, slow, can't jump that high, and I can do it without hands. Just stick to it. Really hope this helps somebody, cause kips are definetely fun.

Don't worry
by Alex on 2003-04-29
Hey, you guys who say you should be able to do it because you're a black belt or you've been doing whatever art for however many years, don't worry if you can't. I know guys who learnt it straight away (my friend did it second attempt) who have no martial arts training and are fairly weak, yet others, like yourselves, have lots of experience but can't land it. If you can, find someone who can do it (or get someone interested so they learn it :D) then get them to teach you. But that's not essential, I learnt it on my own. Oh, and I don't think that weight or whatever should be a problem either. Just stick with it. Practise on a matress first. It's easier and less stressful when you fall. Then move onto harder ground. Hope this helps - don't give up!

for bigger guys - i'm 6'2", 210 - try it on a downward slope to get the feel of it and try to keep your legs straight when you are thrusting them. this should give you more momentum.

Practice on a bed at first to build up the muscles u use without any pain, then jus take it to grass or earth, as long as u don't mind a tiny bit of pain when it'll go wrong at first, u will eventually get it right and it's a huge adrenaline rush when it goes well! if i can do it anyone can do it, and it took me about a week from hearing bout it to doing it.

by Super Saiyan 4 Phil on 2003-07-19
I've tried all of what most of you said. But i cannot perform the kip up correctly. I have a strong neck, strong back, strong arms...just about most muscles on my body are strong but I cannot perform it. My legs lift off and so does my upper body but my upper body lifts off the ground by only a few inches and comes straight back down.
So how the bloody hell can I perform this move correctly?

LISTEN TO MEEEEEEEEE!
by wise fool on 2003-07-22
alright listen to me. OK. what you gotta do is kick as straight up as you can. Now the trick is to wait just a moment after you kick up, to push with your hands and to try to snap your feet to where you ass was.TRUST ME GODDAM IT, that's the thing in doing this move.you gatta wait till your legs are up in the air and your back is off the ground. the problem is if you don't wait and you kick with your legs and push with your hands at the same time, you don't get enough lift.it's as simple as that, waiting just a half second.AHHHHH, we now see patience is the key, hmmmm?Very interesting, veeeery interesting indeeeed.

First of all you need to lay down :)
Then u have to kick up as hard as u can(like if u want to kick a bird).... then hook your legs so they will be placed behind ur butt.
It took me a month to lean this.... But if u practice a lot, then u only need about a week. :)

Go berserk!!
by Zenin on 2003-08-15
Get a real soft surface, first of all. You don't want something hard or else the pain will irritate you and slow you down. Those cushioning matts you see at gyms work best, or a bed.

Then, do as what most have been saying, explode your legs at 45 degree's or a bit higher and try to get them under your ass.

Do this fast and in a continuos motion, that is if you keep failing. So you explode, you fall on your ass and mess up, get back into position and explode again. If you fail over and over, it should piss you off enough to start doing this right. Also, be sure to stretch prior to your attempts, as it will make you more flexible and less prone to injury.

GOT KIP UP TRY THESE VAREATIONS
by MTHS martial arts boy on 2003-09-17
MULTIPLE KIP UP
Do kipup, but do not bring your upperbody up at the end. Instead jump back on your shoulders right after ya feet hit the ground. Make sure your hands are behind ya shoulders when ya come back down. Make sure your hands tuch the ground first so that they sofffin the fall back After that repeat it. After a while you will be able to do over 10 in a row.

NO HANDED KIP UPS
Use the same form as a kip up, but without hands. You use ya neck in place of ya hands. You just push ya head back against the ground as ya do it. If ya can not do it its probibly means ya do not have enough neck strength yet. Just keep tryin.

SUMERSULT KIP UP
Keep feet side by side. do a half sumersult. Wait untill shoulders hit and then do a kip up. Do it slow at first.

DIVEROLL KIPUP
Do the first part of a diveroll right when ya hand tuch the ground start the whip with ya legs. The reason you do that is because ya momentum will make you roll if you did not start ya leg whip that early. Once the shoulders hit finish like you would do ya kip up.

HAAD SPRING/like a kip up, but you do it out of a headstand.
All you do is go into a headstand. Start to fall like you would be fallin on ya back. Actual it more feels like ya off ballanced right before ya fall. That is when you want to do it. It is just like a kip up, but ya head takes the place of ya shoulders. You be popin off ya head instead of ya shoulders.
THESE MOVES ARE FUN AND THEY LOOK COOL YOO GOOD LUCK!!!

my notes on the kip up
by krazy kippin fool on 2003-09-21
learning the kip up is simple if you think of a mousetrap... you gotta figure a LOT of tension goes into the loading of the trap... so you're gonna need to load up just as much to get off the ground. start by sitting on the ground with your legs straight out in front of you. roll back on to ONLY your upper back while maintaining that same bend in your hips and do so quickly so that your legs press as close to your face as possible... (oh and of course, place your hands on the ground a lil wider than shoulder width by your ears) but don't do anything yet... just repeat this over and over again until you feel right about your upper body being on the ground... continued in next post...

my notes on the kip up (pg 2)
by krazy kippin fool on 2003-09-21
ok from this position... and not after being held, but immediately after getting there (when you're the most loaded), kick your legs to a point just over your own hips/butt... oh, and for my fellow martial artists, think there's a brick in front of and above you that you need to break... in other words... kick HARDER than you know you can and PUNCH the ground with your palms as you feel your upper back lift off the ground... if you haven't got your upper back off the ground (even with an immediate flop back on the ground) OR you note that you're moving forward with each rep... kick higher... if you're falling down from a decent height after the kip... aim that "brick" i talked about a tiny bit closer to the horizon... (kick more forward)...

i don't believe 45 degrees is for everyone... it's a difference in torso length and leg length...

my final word on the handed kip up...
by krazy kippin fool on 2003-09-21

i just stumbled along cause im trying to get pointers for doing 1020. yea. i saw ur wimpy advice. and that thing, using ur hands is only for beginners? watcha smoking? heres how you do one...(START ON A BED I DONT WANNA GET SUED)
1) LAY ON THE GROUND (DUH)
2) PUT UR HANDSBYE UR HEAD SO THE fingers ARE FACING BEHIND YOU
3)PRACTICE KICKING AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE HARD WITH YOUR LEGS. YOU WILL NOTICE (WITH A LITTLE PAIN) THAT YOU GO UP AND FORWARD A BIT.
40 now practice kicking with ur legs and bending them after you kick so u are in a painful position with your feet under your ass (ur still lying down).
4) now so you can get some place with ur legs, now after you push of with ur legs, push of with your hands to make you go forward (practice this by itself to get the feeling). remebmer, the forward motuion, not the up down or back ones, arms can do all sorts of things...
5) yea, u go forward through the air, great. and you hit ur back. great.
6) now, start ur crunchies. after you kick push bend up like a sit up as if your eager to see your results. you will be standing. wow. good job : )

NOTES:
i gaurentee you you will not do this 100 percent. i had to practice after watching moveis with chakie chan. then on my bed. then on the first time i did on hard ground i did it. then i kept on falling. but knowing i could do it kept me going, keep at it, girls are impressed : )

wha? i agree wit yah too... but my question is...
by krazy kippin fool on 2003-10-05
who said handed kip ups are for beginners? if thas in regard to the comment about my brother being able to do it w/o hands, then i hope no one else misinterprets that comment as such. i'm sure we can agree that w/o hands is more difficult than w/, but both are tight... second... for anyone else who's reading this, if you don't quite have the ab strength to pull your legs over from the laying down position, try it by starting seated... (i'm not the most physically fit person in the world... but it hasn't kept me down)... lots of practice in that way helps you develop the strength to do so laying down... hope my advice does everyone some good... beginning or perfecting. ONE.

Actually
by Garf on 2003-10-16
It's true what they say.
Once you know how to do it, it's very easy :p

Just try lying on the grass, do it for like 200 times and you should be able to do it.

Keep your legs straight, it's easier that way .. its also easier to roll back all the way (on your shoulders) so that your toes touch the ground

Drop your legs for a bit and kick (NOT UP, more like Forward) .. and push with your arms, keep pushing until the arms loose contact with the ground (dont remove your arms directly after pushing)

How to impress your sparring partner
by Last Ninja on 2003-10-17
I saw this move in films and games, and was really taken with it. I practiced by bending my knees, and then pushing back with my hands past my head and kicking slightly up and forward at the same time. Then I progressed to straight legs. This is the same, but instead of kicking straight up, swing your legs forward. With enough power, it will pull you upward. Then, onto no-hands.... But this kills your neck!

kip up instructions
by james on 2003-10-21
First things first if u can do a headstand flip u can do a kip up so atleast try one.
If u are still unable to pull this off here are the instructions.
first roll back onto your shoulders (note) put your hands behind your shoulders
whilst on your back bring your legs over your head
if u are flexible enough to touch the ground like this good for u it helps
Now throw your legs directly up, they should automatically throw your body forward.
your legs should now tuck under your butt and your body will come over this in the upright position.
(notes)
put your all into springing up
do this in gripped shoes/trainers
do not do this in slippery conditions
don't be a wimp u can't hurt yourself unless your a dumbass

Kip up
by CK on 2003-11-03
Use a mattress or take all the cushions off your sofa and put them on the floor. Then find a nice Jackie Chan film and play one of his kip-ups in slow motion. Keep trying it (and failing) but it will come with practice.

A lot of these moves are about momentum and a sudden burst of energy.

Without hands is better but personally I don't get as huge a "spring" off the floor compared to when the hands are used to give you that extra little boost.

Practice practice practice and don't give up. I think this is more of a party trick than a useful martial arts move to be honest :P Why spring up right into your opponents face after they just knocked you down?! A back roll is probably wiser!

I have a question of my own now... any advice on how to jump backwards on to your shoulders from a standing position, then kipping right back up? Bruce Lee does it when sparring in Enter the Dragon! I think this goes back to the problem with "fear of falling backwards". Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

beginer's DO NOT try to kick your legs forward. try to keep your legs straight and push your legs to your chest then swing your legs hard and when your leg is about to hit the groung, bend your legs and land. ur hand is not needed at all but if u are weak or want a powerful kip-up i would suggest putting ur hands parallel to the ground and push off when swinging.
The reason for me not using hands in kip-up is that when u do sparring u will want to use ur hands t defend.

Nevermind the last comment on my previous post... I realised the move is listed as a cradle

hmmmm..... Handed is better in some ways...
by Anonymous on 2003-11-28
after i kick out with my legs i push off with my hands. then as i crunch with my abbs i bring my arms up to gaurd. then once i land in a crouching postion i stand up ready to go.

Kip ups
by kicker on 2003-12-01
when i do kip ups i usually keep my legs strait and bring them back to my head, then u wanna use your ab mussels to help u kick ur legs and let ur breath out when u do it, practice u should get it.

here's help
by Anonymous on 2003-12-25
after you thrust with ur legs, wait jus a split se cond and then use ur arms to push u up...... the del ay will seem unnatural, but if you have strong arm s, it works!

i find that if you do this move slowly
it is easi er as you have time to kick straight.
try it. ins tead of lying down and worthlessly kicking air, r aise your legs over your head keep them there for h alf a second and then kick.
this will make ita lo t easier.

kip up is hard when you first try but with lots of p ratice you CAN DO it even large people (am large my self) i weigh 13 stones and am 5,4ft. try practici ng on your bed before doing in a solid ground. REME MBER put your hands back near you head and bend you r legs towards your head and when your ready KICK y our legs towards the sky and REMEMBER to use you tw o hands (they help a lot) and one last thing DONT HA TE YOUR SELF FOR NOT DOING IT RIGHT!!

i found that to do kips ups i throw my weight to my l egs and feet towards my bottom. be hind this helps to pull my self up i also push off with either my hea d or hands which ever works better.

i couldn't kip up for ages, and in 5 seconds of try ing a new technique iv mastered it, roll on to your back or shoulders and place your hands next to you r head with your fingers pointing towards your fe et, now, kick upwards and forward and arch your bo dy slightly so the last thing touching the floor i s your head and push hard, if done correctly and wi th practice, you will kip up, good luck!!!!

rolling on to ur shoulders is key...cuz if u don' t..its hard to snap ur body up when u kick...remem ber to kick at about shoulder height(the height o f ur shoulders when u stand up.) It took me a few mon ths to manage to do proper kick ups...i'm still pr acticing. This is a trick that anybody can do, i'm a 14 year old girl...and i can do it fine

random tip
by ajax on 2004-03-04
i just got this move last week. i'd been trying to kip-up from a stationary position but was never a ble to get the forward momentum to spring up all th e way onto my feet. so i practiced kind of bouncing up from my upper back to my feet at the end of a forwa rd roll instead of just rolling onto my feet until i had enough power in the spring that i could stop m id-roll (curled up on my back with my legs above my head) and still make it onto my feet. then instead of rolling forward to that position i just rolled back onto my shoulders to kip up. once you've done it once it's easy

I've been trying to get this for the last three da ys. I must have tried it about a million times, my s houlders, wrists, hamstrings and neck hurts lik e hell! I think I've dislocated an eyeball and fra ctured a nipple. :D

I've tried every tip I've read and I'm getting closer and closer but I just c an't seem to get my torso up enough to make it uprig ht. I think a few days rest is called for...

To all the people who mastered this easily, good on y ou - I'm really struggling! :D

ok so to do this trick you don't have to be very str ong .its key is in three places arms legs and abs.f irst try it in a bed its easier.when you see this mo ve you think you doit with your legs mostly but its all in the arms.forget you have legs put them clos e to your chest and push hard with your arms.try it alot of times.than when your in the air after push ing with your arm thrust your legs up.if you want h elp contact me.

the best advice posted for me here, so far was fro m 5th Degree Black belt Tae poster, who suggestes trying the first part alone first, where you thru st your feet up and try to bring the balls of your fe et right to where your but used to be. If you do that alone some times, you start to get the picture.. I still havent mastered it, but at least now, i have found a reliable way to practice it, and I feel I am getting closer, thanks 5th Degree Black belt Tae !

Don't put to much thought into it.Just Do It!!!t rust me it's so easy once you get it you'll want to l earn to kikk yourself in the ass.Anyone practici ng the kip-up that cannot land it is probly tryin t o hard.Relax and let the natural momentum your le gs create plus your abdominals lift you onto your feet.Believe me I was so fukkin happy when i first started landing em that I immediately tried the n o hander and landed it first try!!!It's just as ea sy.That proves that YOU DO NOT NEED YOUR ARMS !!!K eep practicing

kip up is tricky
by Andy Tan on 2004-06-01
heres how i do, when i use my hands, i only use it fo r balance, i use my HEAD to push my self up, u also ne ed a lttle bit of flexiblity on the back of the thig hs(dont know whts it called), kick it up as fast as u can and land as close as your butt as possible, o a nd when u do this move, DONT THINK ABOUT IT, i found out this was my trouble trying to do this move, u ju st do it, im not saying its so easy it comes natural , remember to use your head and your arms to push yo urself up, after a while, it will be as easy as taki ng a dump, go and try this and tell me what happens

by shaun on 2004-06-04
i just learned to do this 2 minutes ago.. i could N OT do this before.

first do it on the bed. on th e 2nd try i got it. do for a few more times on the bed t o get a hang of it. once you can do it on the bed, try i t on the floor. its really easy.

one VERY impt point. DO NOT kick 45 degrees. try to kick as VERTI CAL as possible. i can do both methods now, but if y ou try at VERTICAL, you will get it. its much easie r.

Kip-up tutorial
by Satty on 2004-06-09
I finally managed to do a Kip-up today on the grou nd. This is my first one ever!! I got it after a few a ttempts. The only thing different when I did it th is time, compared to when I tried and failed for th e past 2 years, was the training methods I used. I m ade a word document with eveything I think is need ed in the Kip-up. If anyone wants this document ju st mail me and I'll send you a copy. Good luck to any one who's trying the kip-up without much success , and a big ups to everyone who can do the move. I tra ined hard for this, I realised some people get it s traight off, and others dont. But the point is, ev eryone trains. So keep training.

A few words to the wise...
by Kyle on 2004-07-09
I remember when I went through all of the same ord eals all of you kip-up enthusiasts are going thro ugh right now. I'll go ahead and throw a few pointe rs out, maybe it'll help you, maybe not.
One of t he most important aspects of the kip-up is consis tency; once you do one right, file away what you di d right in your mind, and try to do that every time.
Another good idea is to make sure you're confid ent before you do the move, if you don't commit, gr avity probably isn't going to permit.
Also, pr obably one of the most overlooked aspects is the b reathing part; it's amazing how we all forget to b reathe sometimes. When you pull your legs back to wards your chest breathe in through your nose, an d when push and jump off the ground, breathe out th rough your mouth. This will not only keep you from losing energy faster, but also gives you more pow er on you launch. If you hold your breath on the lau nch, you're depriving your body of oxygen, thus w eakening your muscles. This will become especia lly important when learning the kip-up without y our hands, as it will improve your technique and c onsitency.

Bruce Lee's Kip up
by MayoW on 2004-07-23
Okay, Everyone go pick up a copy of "Enter the Dra gon", In the opening scene when Bruce is fighting the guy ( name slips my mind at the moment ) The guy t hrows a punch at Bruce and Bruce kipups, I could no t get a kipup comftorably. I could land them on occ asion but it hurt. I was watching enter the dragon today and slowed it down to 1/16 frames a second, t hen went and tried it, nailed it perfect first try . Here is how to do it.

1) Build momentum, do a b ackroll, but don't roll on over.

2) as you rol l toss your legs straight above your head. Do not b end them. Your body should now be set on your shoul ders your hands next to your head with your legs la yed over ontop of you.

3) Kick your legs up and out at a 45 dagree angle, pushing out with your han ds at the same time.

When you kick don't chamb er your legs at the knee, your body should fling it self into a front stance. But keep in mind you can' t just lay down and do it, you have to build momentu m to kipup.
Hope I have helped.

wen iw as learning to do kip ups i could always kic k and get really high and all, but i just kept falli ng back down, until i realised that u have to push y our body forward with ur arms as hard as u can to get it over ur legs, at least wen ur doing them with han ds

Kip up easy, try it today!!
by chris on 2004-08-17
OK, i came here yesterday to look for how to do a ki p up, i could only
wriggle about on the floor lik e a reterd before, but now i can do it
everytime. ITS ALL ABOUT THE ROLL BACK, when you roll back don 't stop, wait and then kick out, use your momentum from the roll and then fling
your legs forwad an d up as hard as you can. When you roll back wait unti l you are at the peak of your roll and just about to c ome forward agian, then kick. Your body will then already be wanting to move forward and you gain th e height from the kick so therefore you land. TRUS T ME, try it, i did it today and it was so easy, stop w asting your life looking at forums on how to do it
get off your fat ass and go for it ,
if you fuck up it doesnt matter, do it grass and it doesnt hurt.

Want help?
by Ninja kid on 2004-09-15
Aight, for all of ya who can't do this simple tric k, i have 2 things to say, either u're not doing it p roperly (which is very unlikely, cause there's h ardly anything to do), or u lack the physical abil ity (most likely). I'd advise ppl who are intrest ed in trying out this kinda sport to first get in go od shape, workout like 30-60 mins a day for a few mo nth and u're good. If u have the physical strength , any trick will come to you much easier and u won't get as much injured on crashes.
Hope this helps .

Practice makes perfect...
by George on 2004-09-25
being fit and having overall strength helps a lo t (especially if you strengthen your neck and tru nk muscles), but you can do it even you weighed 300 lbs! ...well, maybe. i'm 5' 8" and 190 and i just le arned HK spins, backfalls, and tornado kicks (st ill workin' on backflips). it just takes practic e... lots of friggin' practice. for kip-ups, it' s all about momentum, springing upward, and tuck ing your feet beneath you.

1. while lying dow n, rock your legs back over your head until you're on your shoulders.

2. immediately shoot you r legs upward and slightly forward in an angle whi le pushing up from your shoulders (and hands). th is will spring your body into the air and with the m omentum of your legs you should be pulled horizon tal.

3. (IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WHO KEEP LANDIN G ON THEIR BACKS OR HIPS) from the momentum of your legs, tuck your feet UNDERNEATH you, NOT IN FRONT of you. and prepare to land on the balls of your fee t. the rest of the momentum should pull the rest of your body up.

it also helps to watch tons of HK action films, especially old school kung fu's. a lso, if you get dizzy while getting up fast, that m eans you're out of shape. GET UP AND BE ACTIVE!!!! !!!!

kip ups
by Anonymous on 2004-09-29
these are really pretty easy. i practiced for fi ve minutes and figured how to do them. of course, i had some tips from this site...

. . . .
by Anonymous on 2004-10-09
pushups and situps can really help this technique. you should push your arms and kick your legs at the same time for combined power. and don't go back to far or you might put to much weight on your arms and makes it much more difficult to do and is more for those who are really muscular in their stomach and arms. if you can do this you could probably do a one handed kick up with nunchucks in hand or a no hand kick up with two pairs of nunchucks

alternative
by Anonymous on 2009-08-18
um isnt ther an alternative to the kip up where u roll ur legs around 2 get momentum???
can sum1 tell me it's name and/or how 2 do it please!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
