a basic kick performed by rotating the hip, bringing the knee toward the chest parallel to the ground and kicking the leg with foot slightly turned down and pulled back striking with the heel.
This is a very effective kick when directed towards your opponent's midsection and/or facial area. Use of heel/blade of foot will offer most force/power when striking.
Side kicks are used in a couple situations. As an attack to the front of a body, or as a follow-up or MAYBE counterattack. If you are doing it as an attack, focus on speed not power. Chamber your kick like a front kick, and as you extend your leg, turn your hip in, and pivot your grounded leg so that it points backward. Its range of strike points can range from the shins to the face. As a follow up to another attack, chamber your leg to the side opposite that leg's side and back a little, so that your butt is facing your target, then thrust your leg out kicking your body forward a little with your grounded leg (remember to pivot your foot) your best target is chest or torse, if you do it right, it can easily knock down most opponents. Don't kick to the head unless you want to kill your opponent, and keep in mind that it is a lot slower than the snapping side kick described at the beginning because your change the momentum of your legs movement when your chamber to the side and back. That will make it hard to hit a small target. Also, balance is essential.
A side kick can be done several different ways. You would be in a side (horse)stance. If you kick with your leading foot it would be called a #1 side kick. If you use your rear foot it would be called a #2 side kick. If you take a step together with your rear foot then kick with the front foot it would be called a #3 side kick.
To perform a side-kick you must first make sure your hips are fairly flexible. Then start by standing in a horse stance with your weakest leg first. Then step through and raise your knee across your body with your foot in line with your hip. When you extend use your hips to drive the leg out and remember to always keep your torso as upright and frontal as the kick enables you.But you must be side ways otherwise its not a side kick. When you withdraw your leg it must come back along the same path as it went out. This means you must re arrange your hip position.E-mail me for more advice and fine points.
Amha Assefa is the number one tennis player for the U 16 US team. He met with Andre Aggasi last week for practice, and was so close to winning. i think he is going to do great in this turnament
I think the most effective point to executing a side kick is to the knee. you don't need much strength and stretching. You can stop your opponent from advancing on you just by use your longer weapon, the leg, against a punch.

If u use the side kick in a fight, which i have done, aim for an open face. If you aim for the chest it will just push your opponent backwards, but if thats what your trying to achieve, by all means do it, and do it fast.
