A friend of mine who was into every sport possible, and an all around perfectionest, once gave me tips on this, even though I am a guy I still wanted to know and now I am glad. What she told me to do to over come the fear and just to practice, is to get about two-three bodylengths from a wall faced away from the wall. Then hand spring from the wall with just my hands then progressing.
I learned flips three ways. First, be about three years old, grab your teacher's thumbs and have fun. Second, find a diving pool and practice there, landings don't hurt if you are far enough away from the board. And finally, find a good friend, learn from each other, help each other out, and laugh at her/him when you get it before they do.
well if you want to learn how to do a backflip practice on a trampoline with 5 bounces then 4 bounces and so on until you get to no bounces as soon as you feel comfortable doing it without any bounces think about the techniques you used and try it in grass.

the momentum and swing in this trick goes backwards, and not up like for a tuck. push off your toes and trust your arms! go in a striaght line backwards and keep your legs together!
dont worry i had the same problem. the trick is no t to be afraid. you need to jump straight up as high as possible and at the peek of your jump bring your knees to your chest and grip your knees. that all t here is to it.
